Is Leadership Really The Problem With Nigeria? Do We Really Have Bad Leaders? by Deadlytruth(m): 1:46pm On Apr 09, 2016
Nearly every Nigerian believes that the bane of their country's development is bad governance/leadership.
It has become a stereotype that God has not blessed Nigeria with leaders who have the fear of Him at heart. Political Scientists of Nigerian origin who should know better also swim in this stereotype. Even comedians are not spared of this delusion as they frequently crack jokes with an imaginary situation where God was blessing every country with mineral resources and granted to Nigeria a quantity and variety that was disproportionately higher than every other country's, and that the other countries complained but God consoled them by drawing their attention to the fact that He did not add good leaders to Nigeria's blessings unlike with them.
We may call it a mere comedians joke but the laughter of approval which usually greets that joke whenever it is cracked on stage is an actual reflection of the minds of most Nigerians as regards the reason for our shameful and sorry state as a country.

However, governance is defined as the rule of man over his fellow men. Therefore governance, by its nature and definition, is bound to be intrinsically oppressive, corrupt and exploitative as long as men remain men and not saints.
It would therefore take a principled, resolute, proactive and responsible followership to check the excesses of leaders and thus force them to govern well whether they like it or not.
Leaders emerge from among followers. So the quality of leadership is only a reflection of the quality of followership. A followership that is greedy, unprincipled, docile, selfish and materialistic cannot produce leaders who are disciplined, principled, active, selfless and abstemious. Wherever you see bad leadership and you want to know why, then just check the followership. A bad followership can't produce good leaders any more than a kolanut tree can bear apple fruits.
For Nigerians, who are themselves bad, to expect who they vote into power to become good is similar to a group of thieves who decide to vote one of them as their leader and then begin to expect the new position to change him from a thief to a normal person?
We often admire America and most European countries as having leaders who fear God. Their leaders actually lead well not necessarily because of the fear of God but the fear of the followers.
But in Nigeria the leader does not fear the followers because he knows they are as weak and unprincipled as himself and therefore cannot even unite to push him out of power. Obasanjo once openly predicted that a strike against him by NLC and Nigerians will not take more than 4 days for the people to get tired of it and begin to adjust to his anti-human policy, and so it really became. I don't know which American President will utter such insult on Americans and last up to 4 days in power thereafter.
Some Nigerians also hold the opinion that we are where we are because the right person is yet to rule. Is it by sheer concidence that after 56 years now we still have not found that right person? A principled, resolute and disciplined followership actually makes the right person out of whoever rises to power.

Until we free ourselves of this stereotype of bad leadership and work on ourselves as follower good leaders will never emerge among us.

Leadership is a big problem in Nigeria plus Africa in general.
Leaders are not patriotic in its actual sense. Most are dull. They don't even obey the constitution of the land but they expect the followers to obey it. Most African leaders see themselves as above the law.

Apart from leadership, the followers too are not left out of the blame. They hail the foolish leaders even when it's obvious that the leaders aren't performing. Some are quiet to object to illicit activities of their leaders for fear of being harmed. Some simply care less.

The very poor and weak institutions that should have regulated the activities of all the agencies of government have also made African countries a miserable place to live in. These institutions are so corrupt and blind to the various atrocities committed by leaders, that the are left to go unpunished. It's both ridiculous and alarmingly amazing.

How will the country move forward?

Africa indeed is a very dark continent!!!

We have Bad leaders in Nigeria ,

But the citizens are worse

Some people defending accused criminals

some just hell bent on making a new administration fail

Conduct the opinion poll on a topic like what would you do if $200M fell off a speeding bullion van and see the comments you will read

For every action there's an equal and opposite reaction , Law of Motion, but In Nigeria , for every action and breaking news of leaders doing bad things , the citizenry is ready to do worst things

Until we reset that mentality of selfishness, abuse of power , Lack of justice, No rule of Law , Godfatherism

Nigeria will continue crawling
