The school management and the students allocated in that hostel are to be blamed.
The school do not take care of the hostels, they embezzled the funds for hostels. As the population of students increases, the school managements didn't bothered to build new hostels.
The last time they renovated most of the hostels in Unilag was in 2012, when Lagos state hosted sport festival. It was even Lagos state govt that renovated it.

The students are to be blamed also, some students would defecate on the floor. Some won't use water to flush after using the lavatory.
High population in each room. A room for 4 students would turn to 12 occupants in a room.

Sorry bro, that's no excuse. I know a nursing school that has a large hostel with few bathrooms, it is never dirty. They fetch water from miles away to bath and flush. This one is on the students bro
You are wrong. It is not the job of the students to clean a public toilet. Everywhere in normal societies this is how it is. When a public facility is left unattended, this is what happens. People will misuse it. Nigeria is in need of some serious education and orientation in asset management and maintenance. It is no coincidence that every public infrastructure is in a dilapidated state. The weird part is Nigerians do not realize that disregarding maintenance has a domino effect. Power and gas provision are two examples that comes to mind. Nigerians cannot maintain a university hostel but expect to maintain the effective distribution of fuel and electricity. OK. Good luck with that.

I remember my days in LAUTECH, the school was/is a non-residential one. Student had to rent rooms in areas close to the campus. Areas like adenike, under G, yoaco, stadium, general etc became developed as individuals built nice student hostels in those areas. Majority of the buildings were self-con rooms costing as much as 120k and as low as 65k. All of that inspired yahooism and oloshoism in the school.

Well, at least the students didn't have to go through what the so-called mighty unilag students go through in terms of toilet, water and power.

Cc lalasticlala
out of point,Yer choice has nofin to do with being a yahoo guys or olosho.

Am not a yahoo guy and living In self-con,av been paying 70k yearly since my days in 100L with no roommate @und g.

Yer choice is yer choice which is directly proportional to ability to finance it.

The students are pigs. They couldn't even keep the place clean. Did they expect the school to keep it clean for them?

So the government is suppose to clean the toilets for them? The students are dirty people, if they can allow their toilet become soiled to that extent. Do the landlords in private hostels hire workers to clean the students toilets? One the issue of light and water, I'm in support of the students but this toilet matter, the students should bear the responsibility.
Err.....if you don't know what to say maybe you shouldn't say anything. I lived in the hostel throughout my four years in that school. The reality is if a toilet is not a pit latrine, there's nothing even the neatest person can do to keep it clean if there's no water. The wcs can't flush themselves. So you have to fetch water from downstairs before you can use the toilet. Imagine if your room is on the 3rd floor. And most times you even need about three buckets of water to use the toilet comfortably. One for initial flushing, one for after using it, and the last one for having your bath to get the germs got from the dirty walls off. Most ladies urinate on the bathroom floor because you don't expect them to go and fetch water downstairs just because they want to pee. Imagine the smell that comes from that. The state of the toilets is not good for the health. In my year one days, I kept visiting my doctor every holiday because of toilet disease. At a point, she adviced me to start shot putting but my conscience wouldn't let me. I had to buy a potty. Because of the structure of Unilag and lack of privacy, there's not much option of doing your business outside hence everyone is stuck with these shameful toilets. I agree that some people are just dirty, but you and i know that if there's water, it would be easier for the cleaners to manage these type of students. The old women carrying water up the stairs everyday all day, I don't wish that on anybody. Don't just sit behind your screen and judge these students if you have not lived their reality.

Sincerely, this school is a disgrace to Federal Universities. This is supposed to be a toilet not a dungeon. Like OAU, they hypocritically display external architectural structures with little or no concern for students' welfare. I bet Unilorin is Just like MIT or Stanford University beside these schools. *Spits and walks out of thread*
When we tell them that Unilorin is far better than all these yeye school the students from such school would not allow us hear word.

That's one of those things i respect Unilorin for. Very very clean Public toilets and very descent hostels.

I can assure go to walk way and any toilet in any of the hostels in Unilorin and you would be marveled at how neat they are. Universities that can't think out of the box and outsource the cleaning of the environment and toilets on their campuses aren't fit to be regarded as schools in the 21st century. How much would it cost to charge each atudent 500 naira per session and outsource this?

An innovative suggestion if I must say. But would they listen? No, they're professors and can't listen to the "mutterings of a confused person" as they'll say.

I solidarize with UNILAG students, nothing seems to be working in the country, yet the youths continue to attack each other over those who care less about them.

That's definitely Eni Njoku hall. I was in that hostel in year one and I promised myself that till I graduate, I will never go to that hall again. The hustle was real then when you have to hold poo till weekend to dispense at home.

Students of the University Of Lagos took to the streets yesterday to protest the state of living in the school's campus. They say electricity supply to their hostels is epileptic thereby disrupting their academic performance as they find it difficult studying at night. Not only are they complaining about electricity, the state of the school's hostel toilets is also part of their grievances. The school is currently on lock down with armed policemen guarding the premises as students have been told to go home by the school authority. Below are pictures of the school's hostel toilets.

Nice to hear that about Unilorin, if true. In the not too distant past you simply don't mention Unilorin when people are talking about UI, Unilag, OAU, UNN and ABU. It underlines what could be achieved when people in authority are firmly focused on what they are being paid to do.
Bottomline is that almost all our universities are substandard in terms of infrastructure etc and we tend to glorify mediocrity a lot probably due to lack of exposure to what obtains in other countries or just to feel good about our choices or where we found ourselves.
It's encouraging to see schools like UI and Unilorin appear to be moving in the right direction. OAU is another sleeping giant but will surely get it right again. Unilag was on the right path during the late Prof Omotola's tenure with lots of development and even a student work-study program that was the first in Nigeria but the 'Nigerian Factor' kicked in. Our universities can definitely do a lot better than they are doing. The Unilag New Hall toilets situation is simply shameful and unacceptable.
