Should I Resign My New Job For A Contract Job? by Beckybeky(f): 9:27pm On Apr 11, 2016
Please I need mature advice if possible from professionals and career persons.

Since late last year, I have been pursuing this job stuff from Shell which someone close to me who works there referred me to.
It is a contract job which will last for about 4 years. It was supposed to start late last year but due to the delay in change of govt, it couldn't.

Last month, I got another new job. The pay is a little below 100k and there is career progression and assured promotions in this new job.

Now my referrer in the Shell job has told me get ready to start on the contract job by next month. This one pays above 200k but its just for 4 years period.
So am confused and don't know what to do right now.
Am thinking that this Shell job might connect me to a permanent and bigger position if I go for it.

From my humble perspective, 4 years in Shell even with 100k not to even talk of 200+ is worth it. The brand SHELL will open a lot of doors for you after the 4 years.

200k contract job? bros use your head. That your permanent job fit rise within that four years. 200k is too small to make me abandon a job of 90k. IMHO sha

Hi Beckybeky

This isn't just any contract job; it is a contract job with Shell. If I were in your shoes, I'd take it, even if it's just for four years. Some contract jobs do not even last more than a year and a year isn't enough time to grow in a particular field. But here you have four years! Enough time to grow and improve yourself, and with the great pay, get additional skills. So I'm not quite sure why you're finding it difficult to choose. A job that offers career progression is great, but to excel in any kind of job, you have to know to play your part.

With the other job, you will be promoted and grow and all that.

But with this Shell opportunity, two things will happen:

1. You get retained if you've contributed greatly to the company. (And there's a chance this happens if you will play your part right.)

2. The contract ends, you have a beautiful CV with Shell stamped on it, four years worth of experience, and remarkable additional skills - things that will definitely open doors to blue chip companies.

So it's not a factor of 'which job will promote me', but a factor of how hard you're willing to work and take advantage of whatever opportunity that comes your way.

Good luck with whatever choice you make. smiley

I think that 100k job is a FG job. I will advise u to tread softly. All that glitters is not gold. I have done it before we can talk if u want more for my experience

A steady meal of garri for a lifetime is far better than a short meal of pizza.

Money shouldn't primarily influence your choice. You should consider which of the two jobs has a better job security. In a contract job, you have no security.

200k X 48months or 80-100k X more than 48months. Your wit should tell you the latter is the sensible choice to make.

Miss Becky, i would've love to know if ur interest is to pursue career job for ur entire life or u have one eye in business?
If the former is ur choice, go for the 100k offer. But if the latter is ur choice, go for shell offer. With the money u will save within this four years period, u can involve urself in a decent business venture that will earn u more money and equally make u an employer of labour.

What kind of experience are you gathering on the 100k job?

In my opinion , four years in Shell is long enough to open numerous opportunities for you. If you become good at what you do with shell, you may not even spend up to four years before getting better offers

You need to be deliberate in whatever decision you eventually take, though no one can even predict what the next moment holds.

However, one thing with contract jobs is that the management can wake up and take certain decisions you might not like because they owe you nothing except your salary in the real sense.

If you decide to go for the contract job, remember save! save! save!.

Cut down on the Brazilian hair, Gucci shoes, fendi handbags and Versace tops. There's time for everything.
