If the new job is a fed govt job please stick to the new job..
Will give u my experience. In 2013 I got two fed govt job offers i.e INEC and NIMC with NO CONNECTION and 3 private jobs..every1 adviced me then that I should go 4 d highest paid job that fed govt job with stipend salary bla bla bla so I listened to them and took the job. Now I am regretting becos 3yrs n counting no promotion and d job is soo stressful. now fed govt r not advertising vacancies again online except tru concection so it's been difficult. Mind you the pay is good but when you are working too much for that pay and then the job security isn't there and the pressure is too much. How do you get to enjoy the money and have that inner satisfaction?
If your new job is a fed govt job please go for it.
I am presently searching seriously for a fed govt job and I know by God's grace I will get it.

I donno y I av never believed in the so called "job security". It appears like a statement for unambitious pple. I was a perm staff of a coy for years and got nothing to show for it until I took a risk out, signed a contractual deal of 1yr with another coy and I have been seeing good progress in my career life and finances. Mind u, the contract has just been renewed again this year and life is still making sense.

My advice: Leave that place and go for d shell job. Work hard, pray hard and be good to d pple ard u. U will neva regret u took my advice.

What if the contract is terminated after 1 year?

In my office, they had some contract staff that were employed for 24 months. The mgt decided to automate and cancelled the contracts after just 3 months. All of the over 30 staff just like that.

Think wisely. Focus more on where you will have the ability to learn more.

From my humble perspective, 4 years in Shell even with 100k not to even talk of 200+ is worth it. The brand SHELL will open a lot of doors for you after the 4 years.
U dey reason well

I have always worked as a Contract staff up until middle of last year. I will give you the pros and cons;

1. There is no duration toa contract staff Job. Thats why you get paid on a 'Day Rate' basis. The day they get tired of you, thats the day you stop working.

2. Contract staff jobs don't usually have the termination benefits.

3. But Contract staff jobs always pay higher than permanent staff jobs.

Now be that as it may, I will tell you one harsh truth; THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PERMANENT STAFF JOB except you are working for a company that allows Unions.

SO my candid advise is to follow the money. Reasons;

1. SPDC experience is always nice to have on your resume.

2. Money, Money, Money.

3. The difference between a permanent job and a contract job in your case isnt worth it so go for more money.

4. Career Growth versus SPDC exposure, SPDC wins all day.

5. Money.

I was almost faced with a similar situation recently. I interviewed for a Contract Staff job with one of the IOC's and my wife almost lost her mind wondering why I wanted to leave a permanent job to go back to a Contract Staff job and when I showed her the pay difference.... grin grin

Goodluck..

I work as a contract staff and the above as stated by MADCOW1 (cant believe I am recommending a madcow advice..lol) is the best advice for you.

Every job is a contract, that is why you have a contract of employment. People deceive themselves everyday thinking they have a permanent job. When there is no business, all employers will let you go including the government, when you do badly the same applies. When they just don't like your face same applies, although is not so easy to do that with a government job but you can always be frustrated.

So please pick the Shell job, keep improving on yourself and keep looking for even better opportunities.

By the way, one year in the Shell job is equivalent to 2 years in your present company and salaries don't increase by 100% as a lot of people might think. That will truly be an exception and usually only possible when you change jobs.

There are several ifs, but they apply to both jobs...why not stick to what you are sure of....double salary, Shell, 4 years on paper?

Godspeed on choosing right for yourself.

*Remember Job security is an illusion*

I would have loved to hear the job description so that I would advise your further. People are saying the brand shell would open doors for you, but it depends on your job. What if after 4 years you don't get another one, what do you do? You mentioned that the current one you are working in is 100k and there is career progression and possibly more security. I seriously advise you to stick with that one. A contract job is a contract job. Your appointment can be terminated even before the expiration of the four years. However if you want to take the shell job, what are your plans after the four years if you don't get another one? I suggest you have a contingency plan in place. Also in your current organisation, where do you see your self 4 years? Woukd you be earning as much as you would be earning in Shell or more in 4 years time? You may think 4 years is a lot of time, but it's not. However from your feedback it seems you have made your mind to take the shell job

Please don't quit your job that has progression plan in place. If you come to shell as a contract staff, you will remain on a job group for years.
Plan well to progress at your job, it is better than taking up a contract job.

Go with SHELL.. 4 years is a long time during which you will make industry contacts and also get referrals to your next project.

Shell experience is always something that can further provide opportunities. I will do same if i were you cool

Congratulations

Beckybeky:
Please I need mature advice if possible from professionals and career persons.

Since late last year, I have been pursuing this job stuff from Shell which someone close to me who works there referred me to.
It is a contract job which will last for about 4 years. It was supposed to start late last year but due to the delay in change of govt, it couldn't.

Last month, I got another new job. The pay is a little below 100k and there is career progression and assured promotions in this new job.

Now my referrer in the Shell job has told me get ready to start on the contract job by next month. This one pays above 200k but its just for 4 years period.
So am confused and don't know what to do right now.
Am thinking that this Shell job might connect me to a permanent and bigger position if I go for it.

No matter how much career progession he makes in one company.. it will never be same in terms of financial remunerations with Shell involved

I choose to disagree with your advice

In the job market, contract or permanent jobs are really not permanent. He can get fired from his "permanent" job. Does that make it permanent?

In Shell he will most definitely learn with industry experts (reference made to your statement in bold)

PEOPLE never want to take RISK esp in dis part of d world. We always want to be sure of everything in-to-to. Personally for me, that thing that I am always very sure of always comes back to f**k me up. Who tells you you can't get fired in your career driven job? Do not let this opp with SHELL pass you by. The Lord that made it to work out for you knows how HE will perfect it. If I were you, I would grab the SHELL offer big tym. I would not even think twice. Forrr wiehhh!

A steady meal of garri for a lifetime is far better than a short meal of pizza.

Money shouldn't primarily influence your choice. You should consider which of the two jobs has a better job security. In a contract job, you have no security.

200k X 48months or 80-100k X more than 48months. Your wit should tell you the latter is the sensible choice to make.
steady meal of garri is kwashiokor lol

OP, pls contract job with shell for four years is better. who told u you can't be laid off in a permanent job?

A steady job is far much better than a contract job. because in a permanent job, u can grow in the company to the point u are earning higher. But in a contract job, ur cv will never change from the position u are. And they can terminate ur job at anytime saying there is no budget and all that. Rules change in contract jobs because ur name is written with pencil and not typed and saved in the computer. And contract jobs tie to another contractor that will be paying u at his own time because shell can neva pay u directly. U may not receive salary in 3months because its a 3rd party contractor paying u.

A bird in hand is worth more than 50 perching on a tree.

Besides, the garri is laced with milk, sugar, groundnut, and beta ice water. She no fit catch kwashiokor.

I seem to have a different view most multinationals do not convert their contract staff however I had two friends who both worked at mobil as contract staff for like 3yrs or so. They were not retained but both of them now work in other oil coys so a lot depends on u,i think if u choose to take the job just go there to learn well and be ready to leave after a year or two

Please take the contract job. The 4 years may most likely be xtended to 6 or 7 yrs if its a construction project. I am talking from experience. After the experi3nce and exposure, you may have made connections that will take to another well paying contract job within shell. Many have worked these contract jobs for over 15yrears and still going. Many have also transited from such jobs to become staffs of other IOCs, especially the operators of newly divested assets. Such as SEPLAT, Midwestern, etc. Some of my guys have such experiences, even though they started out as contract staff in another coy. Go for shell

Hello sir, your account thrilled me!

So there was actually a time, in very recent times as 2013, when Federal Govt jobs were advertised and people got it based on meritocracy?? I am surprised!

I believe everything happens for a reason, so dont take it hard on yourself.

Meanwhile, i have sent you a PM. I am also searching for a Govt job, maybe we could brainstorm ways to get them.
