Nigerian police teargas is enough to kill even a non-asthmatic person.

Although I wonder why an asthmatic student will join a student protest, peaceful or otherwise.
She doesn't need to join to be a victim, is the tears gas limited to only protesters, what about commuters or pedestrians?
Remember, it is a school environment so almost all walking or otherwise are students!

Uniport is a federal university and i think the federal government or ASUU shld do something abt dis riot that lead to lose of lives of some the students.

Is too sad a story.

In 2009....ASUU and the then government signed an agreement....under which N3 trillion in extra funding was to be given to universities over the next 3-4 years...which would have helped keep fees down among other things.

In 2013....ASUU was told by the then government that that N3 trillion in extra funding was not possible. Instead N200billion annually for the next five years was offered. ASUU took the deal...largely because Nigerians were tired of the strike they were on at the time (to fight for the N3 trillion).

So far....only one installment of the N200bn has been paid.In 2014. Since 2015....nothing else has been paid...because oil price has fallen.

Fees went up in some federal universities in 2014....Uniport inclusive.

The only way for fees to be reduced/kept low is for government to find N3trillion or more in extra funding for universities. But this year....we have a budget of N8trillion. I doubt anyone in this country would agree for N3 trillion of that budget to be spent on just universities

Again....Nigeria Police needs training and funding for better riot control equipment....other than teargas.

Nigeria is a country where the government doesn't prioritise education.

Uniport is fund of increasing its school fees unlike other federal universities, it is becoming alarming.

It is not that we are not prioritizing education...it is just that thanks to increasing numbers of students it is becoming more expensive for the govt to keep fees for students low (It is estimated that it costs at least 600000 naira yearly...one private university owner puts it higher...to train a Nigerian student. Govt pays most of that money).

And now...oil prices have fallen.

I won't be surprised if other universities follow Uniport's lead.

May her soul rest in peace. We have a government that have no respect for rule of law. No soldier or policeman has been prosecuted for crimes against innocent citizens. From shiit massacre, to ipob executions, to this present uniport indiscriminate killings. Their Oga Buhari old soldier no send "abiding by rules of engagement". They may be encouraged to be more unruly in the future, after all, "nothing mega ". In the face of boko haram, they become meek cats while in the presence of unarmed citizens they become roaring lions. Restructure Nigeria Now!
These are the same people that will still complained that the security were there but they did nothing. This is a normal case dude, they were not suppose to use gun with live bullet, but rather gas, and if someone died as a result of gas its within the frame of the law still, that wasn't an extra-judicial killing. She made a mistake being there from the first instance. RIP. to the dead.

our men in black need serious training on how to control crowd and many other events.

DAMN!!I can even imagine the f00L aiming the tear gas gun at somebody to shoot meanwhile you are meant to shoot it towards the ground.

R.I.P to the girl..

That said, she should not have been a part of that protest.

A protest the student body claimed was peaceful yet disrupted activities in the general area which led to vandalism toon of school properties and private businesses as well.

Those talking shiit about the police should answer one question: what else should the police have used to control the rampaging students apart from teargas and water cannons?

Her story is sad, but like I told a colleague when the protest was going on, the smart students are the ones that have vacated the environment of the protest. Peaceful protests are hard to achieve with such mammoth crowds. Some miscreants would cease the opportunity to cause havoc.

It's really a sad situation but the truth is that she should not have been anywhere near that protest knowing her health issues.

Agree with your post 99%.
Other options the police could have employed?
- batons and whips
- pepper spray
- rubber bullets
- electric tasers
- Long Range Acoustic Devices
- armoured fighting vehicles
- aerial surveillance
- police dogs
- mounted police on horses.

May her soul rest in peace. I will blame her for her own death. Why will.you follow a protest when you know that you are asthmatic? Even in USA the police have even down worse to it's citizens compared to Nigerian Police force. I think she reaped what she sowed. Pls other Asthmatic patients should take note that any form of protest any where pls look at your health because only the "Living person can request for Change".

But why would she go for a protest when she knew she was asthmatic? She should know such was very possible. Any way may her soul rest in perfect peace. I still believe some deaths could be averted.

Tear gas does not just affect only those it is aimed at. If you live or are taking refuge anywhere close to where teargas is fired, you will be affected too. So, she doesn't have to be among protesters to be a victim. Bullets, teargas can also miss target and hit innocent people who lock their doors and windows.

It is quite unfortunate that when there is unrest, some people may pay the ultimate price. May her family find comfort.
