You havewhit low, you have access to internet, where you can search medical sites, instead you decide to ask on Nairaland, Nairaland are you for real? does that person deserve a sensible answer?
A fool will forever remain a "FOOL" because they do not READ and they know not that they know not, the guy clearly requested for a root, or herb something that someone used that may not be in any medical site.

Start using ketocanazo tablets and an anti fungal gel. It worked for me.

This worked for me too, had a bad finger for over 20yrs and that drug solved it in 2 months. Also start dipping your finger in dettol every morning for about 10 - 15mins. You will give the testimony very soon.

Fungal infections can stay for a lifetime but they dont like that drug at all.
Yes, you 're quite right. It's a fungi infection. Dettol and a fungicide like "altego" is quite good.
Also keep the finger dry as much as possible. You can also hold your finger close to a hot substance like candle or lantern, especially before you sleep

If it was just starting to grow I would suggest you get a diluted car battery. Dip your hand in it. But since its from childhood,I doubt if it would work

Turn boiling water in a bowl and put salt in it. Dip your finger into the bowl. I know it would hurt u but you have to bear. Do this step repeatedly.

Once you are done, dry it with a clean towel. Rub Orioyo otherwise known as Shea butter on it. The Shea butter would bring the puss to the surface thereby reducing the pain. Do this 3 times a day or as often as possible. If you don't see any improvement after 2 days, then you have to visit a doctor.

Oh my God...that's a lot of YEARS to have one whitlow consistently without cure. Whitlow is caused by herpes virus so you seriously need to go to a doctor/dermatologist and get a proper anti-viral medication.

From the photo, your finger still looks infected and that thing is highly infectious.

Pele.
You r so right.. The op should get tested and have his doctor prescribe anti-viral. Herpes is a life long disease, it has no cure but such outbreaks like whitlow and cold sores can be treated with anti-virals.
Google up people...it helps.

I wonder why people can't be matured and just help him out. Just buy lime, maybe five(5) of it. Cut the lime into two, then dip the finger into the lime. Do this morning and night and as regular as possible. It will go a long way and kill what's responsible. That's what many people use.

Since you say it still gives you pain, I wonder if this is whitlow.
and your picture does not show the finger very well.

Anyway, my sister had something similar for years (not whitlow. Some infection, maybe) . She went to the hospital and all that and the nail continued to grow so weird and it often gave her pains. Eventually, she decided to just forget about it and leave it.

Then one day a total storage saw it and was like, "Omg! I know that thing. I had it for years. " then she told my sister how she got it treated. It was a 'bizarre' treatment. But she tried it. In weeks the rough finger fell off and she has her beautiful nails back. But treatment was painful.
what have you just said? We're is the solution?

Whitlow fingers can be the same again. I had about 2 on different fingers while growing up . After they dried up ... without applying nothing ... I was able to use blade to GRADUALLY cut the nails until there was no nails and I then had to have it grow again all from the scratch. If you can do that GRADUALLY, it MIGHT become normal again. Just a suggestion not compulsory. Only talking from experience. I was only able to do this after the whitlow dried out not before.

cowgirl9090:
The way I see that finger coupled with the pain you feel sometimes ,the whitrow is not totally gone from that finger , because if the whitrow has been cured you won't feel a single pain even if it has deformed the finger . so my best advice I can give is to put that finger inside a boiling water not just hot water but a boiling water . put and remove 5times n a 3seconds interval , do it for three days and two times a day (morning and evening ) . because its only when the whitrow is gone (cured) can your finger starts healing up again, and you have to live with the fact that it will never be the same again .

boiling water cures it faster than anything, it cured mine in three days and a friend I told to do the same in two days.

Herpetic whitlow (whitlow finger)

Introduction

A herpetic whitlow, or whitlow finger, is an abscess of the end of the finger caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus (the "cold sore virus"wink. It usually affects the fleshy area of the fingertip.

What are the symptoms?

The fingertip suddenly becomes red, swollen and extremely painful. Small white blisters develop underneath the skin of the finger, which may break to release fluid, eventually crusting over.

What's the cause?

There are two types of herpes simplex virus (HSV), type 1 and type 2. Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can cause a herpetic whitlow. These viruses can also cause cold sores and genital herpes. A herpetic whitlow can develop as a secondary infection if you already have a cold sore or genital herpes and you touch the sore area of skin, transferring the virus from your mouth or genitals to your finger.

It can also develop if you touch the sore or blister of another infected person. You're at greater risk of becoming infected if you have a weakened immune system.

http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/herpetic-whitlow/Pages/Introduction.aspx
How to reduce pain.

Soak the infected area.

Warm water can provide pain relief from whitlow. This is best used when painful lesions start appearing on the infected area. You can add salt or epsom salt to the water to help with relief. The concentrated salt will diminish swelling in the effected area.

1. Fill a container deep enough for the infected area with warm water.

2. Soak the infected area for 15 minutes. Repeat as the pain reoccurs.

3. When finished, wrap the area with a dry bandage wrap to prevent disease transmission.

4. Add soap to the water for open blisters. If you've tried to burst or drain a vesicle, you can add regular or antibacterial soap to the warm water when you soak the area. While you may opt for antibacterial soap, studies suggest that regular soap works just as well at protecting against bacteria and infection. Keeping soap in the water can help prevent the spread of the condition as fluid from the infection mixes in with the water.

5. Magnesium sulphate paste can help with the pain and swelling associated with whitlow. Though this is widely documented, the exact reason behind this effect is still unclear. In a study published 2008, a group of patients with HSV 1 or 2 were treated with a mixture that included magnesium. The results showed that over 95% had resolution of symptoms within 7 days.
