The sad issue is that Buhari's "economic plan" is still on the drawing board. They are still "planning to" and "hoping to" start economic stimulus

Naija, it's just a matter of time and other sectors would follow suit. Companies in a bid to obtain forex will ask customers to pay in dollars thereby dollarizing the economy.

For your mind you don make sensible comment. shior.

Other passengers who are unable to pay for tickets using elevated black markets may have to fly local carriers such as Arik to other countries.

That is your solution unless arik doesn't fly there make we manage this dollar scarcity.
its bad to reason with ass. simple law of demand & supply, u no sabi. u think sey arik plight all route & get capacity to satisfy the demand of all travellers? smh

Someone is standing his ground against devaluation when the Naira has already been devalued for us. Such a joke.

Arik does not have the capacity to handle the demand, and if we say they can expand where will they get the forex to buy/lease aircraft, pay for landing slots etc?

Re: Nigerian Travellers Squeezed As Foreign Airlines Stop Ticket Sales In Naira by Nobody: 8:04pm On Apr 25, 2016
Of course the solution is simple....bring in new forex.

Which can only come in for now from oil.

Long term.....Nigeria becomes a manufacturer.

The thing is...the good times of oil boom are over.Now...we have to conserve dollars.

Devaluing the naira won't help much. At worst....it means you need more naira to get one dollar at the official rate...and it would be much higher in the unofficial market.

The real problem is lack of forex. Which.....let's be honest...can be solved if oil prices go up again (short term)....but long term....if Nigeria becomes a industrial power....exporting goods for forex.

Nigeria has always been dependent on the revenue from selling raw materials.Once the price goes up....we can spend money on anything. GEJ...had a ''prosperous'' economy because he had enough forex to spend due to high oil prices. Buhari does not have that benefit....and he has to restrict forex to prevent things from getting worse.

The solution is simple. We have to stop relying on agric, oil, mining etc....and start relying on innovation and industrial development. And we can get there by spending more on power and transport....and less on subsides, and jamboree projects.

There is an economic plan. It involves restricting imports of things we can make at home...and importing only the very necessary stuff.

It also involves ''diversification''.

Sorry for those that are still stuck in that place especially the southerns. You have been surrounded by fulani herdsmen, Buhari has negotiated with all the neighboring countries like Benin, Cameroon and chad and Niger to tighten their boarders against escapees. Now people can even afford airline tickets to run away. The pounding of South will soon begin.

I await the responses from all of the economically illiterate Buhari apologists who will "explain" how this is supposedly a "good" thing, how foreign airlines are only "portfolio" investors, and how this shows that "buying local" is the answer to all of Nigeria's problems.

There's just no way around it: Buhari's nonsensical economic policies are threatening to undo any good that may result from his alleged "war on corruption". It's simply astonishing that the man should have spent 30 years in the wilderness seeking to regain power, without ever bothering to at least try and learn the rudiments of economics in the meantime. Unlike Obasanjo with his farms and Transparency International work, it's not as if Buhari was particularly busy doing anything else either!
If only we can suggest solution...

An opportunity just present itself for Local Airline to thrive if only they can UP their game and standard. People won't have alternative than to fly them since they collect naira.

What do you think?

why would it be much higher in the unofficial market? Usually after devaluation, the difference between CBN and parallel markets isn't much.

Then again, if they can afford it...so be it.

Unless you want to get your legislator to pass a bill reducing the amount of money we pay our leaders in salary to N100000 monthly.

From previous experience....once devaluation occurs...the rate in the parallel market always goes up at a higher rate than the official rate.

That is how it has been since the 1980's...when we brought in the two-tier system.

And it is like that because there is relative scarcity in the parallel market of dollars. Even when the times are good. (Add the fact that the parallel market is a bit risky...).

Devaluation won't solve the scarcity of forex problem.
