Having mental illness does not mean he does not know what he is doing? It is nothing new,infact it is quite a common occurrence ,I believe the technical term is infanticide though it is more common with women.
Phenomenologically it is not very different from the parents who turfed out the young baby as a "witch" though that seems to have some kind of social imprimatur. The witch child was sentenced to a slow and painful death by starvation. We close our eyes to what is happening in our society everyday but people kill their children daily in many ways in Nigeria ,it is only the dramatic events that grab out attention
