ABAKALIKI—GOVERNOR David Umahi of Ebonyi State yesterday explained that there was no cogent reason for Ebonyi people to demand the immediate withdrawal of Fulani herdsmen from communities in the state, considering the harmonious relationship existing between Ebonyi people and the herdsmen.

The governor, who stated this during an enlarged security council meeting at the International Conference Centre, Abakaliki noted that grazing routes would be created in communities to enable the Fulani herdsmen carry out their duties without rancour and disaffection.

Umahi condemned the attack on a community in Enugu State allegedly by Fulani, describing it as unfortunate.

He called on security agencies to be on the alert and curb all manner of criminalities across the state, even as he directed them to mount surveillance and checkmate the excesses of herdsmen in the state, especially at night.

The governor directed the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Commissioner for Border, Peace and Conflict Resolution and Special Adviser, SA on Internal Security to come up with a modality on how to set up a community-based committee in liaison with the Police to curb incidences of crimes across the state.

According to him, any student found to be a member of a secret cult group will not only be arrested but would be handed over to the security agencies for prosecution.

He also directed that nobody in the state should collect money from cattle herdsmen as anybody caught in such act will be prosecuted.

The governor, following the absence of two Development Centre Coordinators, Ohaozara West and Ohaozara, Hon. Christian Ngene, and Hon. Eni Odii respectively, suspended them indefinitely.

This governor wants to create grazing routes for Fulani herdsmen.

Has he thought through it? Will he pay compensation to those he will acquire the routes from?

What will the state benefit as a result of this investment (grazing routes) in cattle farming?

How is he supporting other farmers? What's good for cattle farmers is good for other farmers.

Will grazing routes stop violence? What's the essence of having grazing routes only in Ebonyi?

I think this has a bit of sense. Everyone shouldn't be thinking of fighting the herdsmen. We should try to find ways to make peace reign. Most of those herdsmen, if not all, are stark illiterates, its useless fighting them.

Truthful and thoughtful. But he'd now be ostracised by his brother and they'd call him a slave like they call anyone else who dares to look them in the face and tell them the truth.

The crime of a few should never be reason to condemn all for that, my friends, is one of the potent ingredients agents of destabilisation employ to promote genocide and chaos.

Edit:

Look at the comments so far, just as expected. He is now "crazy", "mad", and a "weed smoker".

Smh.

i think d governor is being wise and smart. Many of us have been so carried away with emotion and sentiment to d extent that we fail to reason.

Herdsmen are Nigerians. They have d right to live anywhere and do business anywhere in Nigeria legally with law and order.

Driving them away can lead to tribal tension and retaliation. Even d cows they rear we eat it too.

I think we should leave emotion aside, and look 4 a smart solution that will be a win win solution.

Igbos are their own problem while they points accusing fingers at other regions, you can imagine with the recent killing in the nearby state of Enugu and the outcry for Fulanis to leave igbo land, one of their governor is saying he oppose it. Beside is another indication that the Igbos cannot live on their own independent of other Nigerians, you see the reason Nigeria government cannot support the Biafra agitation of the igbos.

All urban land in nigeria is vested in the governor. So yes he knows what he is saying.

Which do u prefer: create legitimate grazing areas or allow the herdsmen to keep roaming unchecked?? Lets be reasonable

The governor has said his own, the brave people of Ezza, Izzi, Abakiliki, Ohaozara, onicha will also say their own with their matchets if need be. I detest violence, but this is the truth. Land issue is a big issue in Ebonyi ask the Ezzas and Izzi.

This guy need to be voted out as a matter of necessity. I would agree with him if it were a sane country, but Nigeria is not sane.
A country with 60% majority Muslim can not be sane.
A country with the 3rd and 4th most deadliest terrorist groups in the world is not sane.
Even the President is mad.

The good thing about this whole current political situation in nigeria is that the saboteurs are revealing themselves without anyone pushing them.

When people say Igbos can sell their brothers for money and power, they are talking about men like Dave Umahi, Rochas etc. Unfortunately there is now a price for being a saboteur in the East. Ask Rochas why his Blood pressure has shot up since Radio Biafra became popular. He no longer talks much since IPOB came aboard.

If any life is lost in Ebonyi to fulani herdsmen, DAVE UMAHI SENT THE HERDSMEN TO KILL THEM. Simple!
