ARE WE A NATION DISTRACTED BY GOSSIPS? That's the question - are we? It's an open secret that scandals sell more. Here's where it gets selective : Political scandals aren't as debated by the citizenry as personal/celebrity scandals. This year started with the much touted Don Jazzy versus Olamide scandal. For weeks on end, it trended on Twitter and other social media platforms. Everyone was talking about it on Instagram, on Facebook, in salons,everywhere!!!... Yes, I was bitten by the gossip bug too but once or twice, I stopped to think: "Do we give this much attention to national issues too? Do we? " I mean, imagine what we can achieve if we lend our voices and lexical opinions CONSTANTLY to issues of insecurity, inflation, corruption and other such issues. You know, a few minutes before I started writing this article, I searched for, "Panama Papers" on Twitter Nigeria. The last mention (as at the time of writing this article) by a Nigerian website was seven (7) hours ago. https://mobile.twitter.com/search?q=Panama+papers&s=typd&x=17&y=15 Seven hours ago. I did random researches on "Boko Haram " and other key national issues and ,to my dismay, the only references were by news websites and blogs. Social media users aren't DISCUSSING about this key issues. Just out of curiosity, I local-searched "Tiwa Savage", "TeeBillz", "Wizkid" , "Edible catering " and the likes. Like the results of the previous searches, they were mentioned by news sites and blogs but that's where the similarity ends. This second set of searches revealed that they were actually being discussed by social media users. Within the elapsed seven hours, there have been countless references to Tiwa Savage, TeeBillz, Wizkid... While it's alright to let one's hair down when need be, we are making a mistake to trivialize what's important - issues which directly affect us AS A PEOPLE. Maybe, just maybe these findings and many more are why our leaders take us for granted. Isn't it odd that they haven't taken punitive measures to address scandals like the Panama Papers issue like their counterparts in other climes? I think it's because they think or know that Nigerians are somewhat easily distracted. They know we'd move on to the next trending scandal. The fresher the gossip, the better, right? So, are we a nation distracted by gossips instead of REAL issues? Source: Mimzy Cc: lalasticlala Mynd44 Dominique |

Nigerians are happy people. We suffer and smile. We love to hide from our reality. We would rather celebrate mediocrity than demand for the best. We would rather use the internet to watch and download movies than research about other countries and how far ahead they are of us. We would rather celebrate thieves than honour heroes. Our problem plenty. ![]() |

This is quite true. The odd thing is that Nigerians would read this, it'd sink in, we'd ruminate on it and in less than two hours, we'd be off google-searching the next gossip and it'd seem like this article and similar ones about us being a distracted people weren't written. Check my signature, folks. |

This question should be answered by everyone. Because I don't see where our recent obsession with pop culture is leading us. Lalasticlala mynd44 seun beta food don come oo. |

hmmmm... well said. But my question is shouldn't charity begin at home? i mean if we as the masses give more cognisance to pressing national issues, then the government will be forced to take them more serious . It is no longer news that there is POWER in the social media because it is as much a tool for LISTENING as well as TALKING HurricaneMIMZY: |

I mean modernity, nollywood and the Nigerian showbiz scene has led to a huge reliance on gossip in national policy making. I dont mean gossip about celebrities, but gossip about regular people. |

True that. But you know nigerians, some have like zero interest in what's happening in the country. The problem here is we tend to spend more time on trivial issues rather than what's more important to us all. Nice write-up Mimzy |

OP, You are right on spot. Although I believe WE (Nigerians) have somewhat moved from that level of nonchalant attitude towards governance/the activities therein to this present level--- where Nigerians are now keeping track n watching closely the affairs of the present government. I also believe the opportunity given to this present government has made 'MORE' Nigerians interested in governance although not as compared to that of the entertainment world--- but Nigerians are now asking more questions on every step taken/to b taken by the government. What's left to be improved on IMO is asking the RIGHT questions n beta understanding of governance by the 'Majority' (I included). Because I believe we seldom discuss governance because we don't really have adequate knowledge to engage in a proper dialogue. Hence, the level of the common mans interest and/or perhaps 'the Majority' in National issues. Note:: My Opinion |

fretfingers:Social media has helped shaa. . . The introduction of hash-tags and other stuff's has gotten nigerians more engaged but I think the govt sponsors some of the controversial stories so they can trend more than they're supposed to. For instance; few weeks ago, we were all about saraki's daily CCT trials and then BOOM! Tiwa Savage's husband provided the perfect distraction and it was blown way out of proportion! Suddenly, we forgot the fuel cue's, we forgot Saraki's daily court visits (I personally don't know if he's done with the courts or not), even boko haram had to bow to Tiwa and her hubby. I think we're letting these things distract us too damn much. My 2kobo. Where is lalasticlala when you need him seff? |

Urlando: fretfingers:@bolded My point exactly... Governance to a common man especially the majority of the youth is kinda boring I guess... Moreover the leaders when I sang the "... we are the leaders of tomorow... Try to pay our school fees..." song in primary school, are the same people still leading us---RECYCLED GOVERNANCE! There is absolutely NO/LESS moltivation to discuss or to develop adequate interest in governance compared to entertainment... According to some theories of moltivation we(humans) act according to our heirarchy of needs. Now taking this into consideration---entertainment moltivates a lot compared to governance in Nigeria (I stand to be corrected), it also helps ease ones stress( heirarchy of Nigerians needs at this present strenuous time)... Stress caused by the state of governance as a result of deeply rooted level of corruption(misappropriation of funds, false manifesto, misuse of power n so on)... Ma'am.... I believe with enough moltivation the youth which contributes to 'the majority' will discuss more on important issues e.g Governance. We gon get there... I believe! |

If we all keep on showing lackadaisical attitudes towards the development of our dear nation, then we should not expect a miracle. Yorubas will say that "Omode Gbon, Agba gbon , lafi DA ile Ife sile" . simply put- it was the collective wisdom of both the young and old that brought about the creation of the Great Ile Ife.. Thanks Iyke. iykekelvins: |

Hmmmm.. Very well said bro.. Your last paragraph triggered a question I have been meaning to create as a topic but let me put it to you... As a Nigerian, do you really think that we have Exclusive Freedom of Speech? Do u believe that our Journalists/Reporters really have freedom of speech? Do u think that the average Nigerian can speak freely without the fear of intimidation? fretfingers: |
| Re: Are We A Nation Distracted By Gossips? by Nobody: 9:47pm On May 09, 2016 |

Spot on!!! Even the average Nigerian will wake up in the morning. Pick up the phone , visit LIB before even brushing or bathing. I can bet that all those online newspapers..(the likes of punch, vanguard and co) don't get half as much traffic. HurricaneMIMZY: |

One of the papers used to have a social media forum, but it was shut down or restricted due to too much fighting or something like that. This was many years ago. |
| Re: Are We A Nation Distracted By Gossips? by Nobody: 10:20pm On May 09, 2016 |
Really..I wasn't even in the know . Well people argue all the time on social media and blogs so I do not think that should be reason enough to shut it down or restrict it. Nairaland is a good example.. People disagree every now and then and that's why we have mods to bring sanity to the forum. Do you think Oga Seun will shut down Nairaland because of that ? I highly doubt it. tpiah01: |

TheSonOfMark:Arab spring? Possible? I laugh! These same set of Nigerians that during subsidy protest, went to Ojota to catch fun and dance to various artists' music. People were saying "The revolution is here!" I just looked at those saying that and laughed.![]() Same set of Nigerian youths that would rather discuss celebrity topics and how much their bags and houses are worth? We have a long way brother. Mimzy, till we pay more attention to STEM and other important issues like Finance, State of the Economy (making them more attractive than what people feel about it), make intelligent chaps ambassadors of certain brands and mentors to high school people instead of certain artists, I do not see that changing anytime soon. |

mimzy:Highly doubtful although never say never. The other forum was actually livelier than nairaland at that time, many of the folks from there might have migrated here no doubt. But the arguments were quite intense and there was a lot of trolling too. |
| Re: Are We A Nation Distracted By Gossips? by fretfingers: 11:45pm On May 09, 2016 |
mimzy:Hmmm... ma'am, This is one broad tricky(if i can use the word) topic on its own-"Freedom of speech or Freedom of Expression" Yes... we as Nigerians, our journalists/reporters do have "freedom of speech"... and yes Nigerians can speak freely without the fear of intimidation... However just the same way every sociological feature/benefit that comes with a peculiar type of governance(in this case Democracy) as adopted by this distinct entity in political geography-Nigeria; can be abused by d citizenry. Thus, the need to place a sustainable clause/limitation/exceptions on the law empowering FREEDOM OF SPEECH. Defamation, obcenity, incitement to violence amongst others are some of the exceptions that voids constituitional protection on freedom of speech/expression OR Re-phrase:: There is freedom of speech. But that freedom as an END. That END begins when the said 'Speech' violates the law that protects its FREEDOM. |
