An Open Letter To Bloggers Struggling To Get More Traffic By Jon Morrow by brianromel(m): 11:29am On May 12, 2016
It hurts me to write this.

For years, I’ve been “the traffic guy.” Not only because I’m good at getting it, but because it’s the question on the top of every blogger’s mind:

“How do I get more traffic to my blog?”

To some degree, this entire site is an answer to that question. You’ll learn more about getting blog traffic here than maybe anywhere else on the web.

But there’s one giant problem…

It’s the wrong question.

And I’ve known it for years.

And I’ve said nothing.

Not because I’m an asshole (well, maybe). No, the real reason is I felt like we were serving the needs of the market. People wanted to know how to get more traffic, so we created courses teaching them how.

But Then I Noticed Something Horrifying…

A large percentage of our students couldn’t significantly increase their traffic, no matter how hard they tried.

And the worst part:

It wasn’t their fault.

They were doing all the homework. They were applying our techniques.

Except none of it was working. Not for the vast majority of them, anyway.

Why?

At first, I thought it was because we sucked. Maybe our techniques didn’t work, maybe the homework was too difficult, maybe we were just lousy teachers.

But then I noticed something…

A small percentage of students who initially struggled would all of a sudden take off like a rocket. For six months, they worked their butts off and got nowhere, and then BOOM, they would get so much traffic they could quit their jobs and become full-time bloggers.

So, I started investigating. What were these students doing differently than all the others?

Did they work harder? Were they better writers? Were they just smarter? Did they have powerful connections?

Turns out, the answer was none of the above.

The only commonality between all of our success stories is they changed the question they were asking. Instead of asking how to get more traffic, they asked a different, much less obvious question.

And it changed everything.

The Single Most Important Question for Beginning Bloggers

Ready to hear the question?

Here it is:

“Is my blog capable of getting traffic?”

I know, it probably doesn’t make any sense.

Is it capable? Of course it’s capable! Every blog is capable of getting more traffic.

Right?

Actually…

it turns out the answer is no. People think you can build a popular blog about anything, but you can’t.

Of course, that statement isn’t surprising in and of itself. It’s logical that some really bizarre topics like square tomatoes or diamond drill bits could never support a popular blog.

But the reality is worse. Far worse.

The Brutal Truth about Building a Popular Blog

After working with thousands of students, I can confidently say there are only a few hundred topics where blogging really works.

For instance, ever noticed how many parenting blogs there are?

Or marketing blogs?

Or social media blogs?

There’s a reason why. Blogging works really well for those types of topics.

But there aren’t any popular blogs about retirement, weddings, or becoming a better real estate agent.

And here’s the real shocker…

There never will be.

Yes, there are millions of people interested in those topics. Yes, it seems like you should be able to build a blog around them.
But you can’t.

Doesn’t matter how hard you work. Doesn’t matter how smart you are. Doesn’t matter how many connections you have.
It’s impossible.

In fact, it’s impossible to build a popular blog around 99% of our passions.

Let me explain why…

The Seven Tests Every Blog Must Pass

For months, I researched what blogs succeed and fail, and I found seven criteria or “tests” every blog passes before it becomes popular.

And here’s the thing:

To have a viable blog, you need to pass all seven tests. If you can’t, your blog will never succeed, no matter how hard you try.

On a more positive note, passing all seven of these tests practically guarantees you can build a popular blog. All that’s left is doing the work to make it happen.

Ready to find out what the tests are?

Here you go:

Size. The vast majority of popular blogs have a total market size of at least 5 million people. And that’s a minimum. Most top 100 blogs have a total market size of 200 million or more.

To be clear, that’s not how many readers they have. That’s how many readers they could have if everyone with an interest in the topic read their blog.

Age. The vast majority of blog readers are between the ages of 30 and 55. If you’re targeting an audience younger or older than that window, such as teenagers or baby boomers, it’s almost impossible to build a popular blog, simply because these people don’t like reading blogs. Not yet, anyway.

Longevity. Because blogs publish content on an ongoing basis, you need an audience that has an ongoing interest. Ideally, it’s a topic like personal finance or social media that changes all the time, and so people want to read about it forever. What you don’t want is a topic like wedding planning or pregnancy, because people are only interested in those subjects for a few months.

Language. In general, blogging as we know it is confined to the English language. Yes, it’s totally possible to build a popular blog in Japanese or Spanish, but the traffic techniques are totally different, and it’s much, much more difficult. In my opinion, it’s far more efficient to use other more traditional methods to build the audience, such as advertising.

Network. For a blog to really take off, you need an audience who is networked with each other through social media. Moms talk with each other on Facebook, foodies hang out on Pinterest, bloggers and journalists are big on Twitter. As a result, they are easy to reach. If your audience isn’t hanging out on a particular social media platform, on the other hand, it’s almost impossible to get any traffic.

Influencer. If a blog topic is viable, you pretty much always find influencers who have already built up their own audiences in the space. Sometimes they are bloggers, sometimes they are podcasters, sometimes they are best-selling authors. The key point: with a little research, you can easily find 5-10 influencers or “thought leaders” already dominating the space. If you can’t find any, there’s always a reason why, and it’s never good.

Desirability. Last but certainly not least, you need to like the audience. Surprisingly, this is the number one reason a blog stalls out following a period of rapid growth. After attracting a small audience, the blogger discovers they can’t stand them, and they stop writing because it’s not fun anymore. The moral of the story: make sure you like the people you are trying to attract because you’ll be hanging out with them for years.

Are You Depressed Yet?

Chances are, your blog fails at least one of these tests.

And you know what that means, right?

It’s curtains. Goodbye, dear one, we’ll remember you fondly forever.

At least as far as getting a bunch of free traffic is concerned.

You can absolutely continue writing, but it’s never going to attract a lot of readers without spending a fortune on advertising, and I’m guessing that’s not your cup of tea.

The Good News…

You can always launch a new blog. If you choose a viable topic, you might even be a little stunned by how quickly it grows.
Because you see, it’s easy to grow a blog that passes the above tests.

This blog got 4,379 visitors on the very first day I opened it. Granted, some of that was due to the promotion strategy I used, but a big part of it was I chose the right topic.

Very impressive....

My blog is actually doing well my daily reach has been on the increase and never decreased... (so with comments) www.newsphases.com

But I still need more traffic and I quit understand the ways to get traffic comes from creating valuable content in which the readers will be ready to share
Sharing on social media platforms
Creating a Contest on your blog
Paying readers to share

But is there more ways in which you can use to get traffic more than these.... Although I have not tried all of them.

For that Jon hit it well on the money with this

The Only Four Traffic Techniques That Work for Beginners
As it turns out, only four exist:

Guest blogging – If you’ve been hanging around me for long, you know I’m a huge fan of guest blogging, and there’s a reason why: it has the second highest VPH of any traffic strategy for beginners. Used properly, you can quite easily cross 50 or even 100 unique, targeted visitors per hour invested. For a free mini class on guest blogging, click here.

Interviews/podcasting – Interviewing influential people and then asking them to share the interview also turns out to be a highly efficient strategy. You can do it as a podcast, or you can record the interviews privately and group them together as an incentive to join your email list. Both avenues have their pros and cons, but either way, the VPH is excellent.

Outreach – This is where things get confusing. While great blog posts and infographics have a poor VPH by themselves, they have an excellent VPH when paired with outreach. You have to be willing to face rejection, and your content also has to be some of the best ever published on your topic, but the long-term traffic from this strategy is excellent. Over the short term, it’s beaten by guest blogging and interviews, which is why I typically don’t recommend it until you cross 1,000 subscribers, but it is still an efficient way to get traffic when you’re a beginner. Click here for a detailed guide on how to do it.

Advertising – Last but not least, the technique with the highest VPH of all: advertising. The problem? It costs money! If you’re a beginner, you might not be able to afford it, which eliminates this strategy for many bloggers, but if you have a budget of a few thousand dollars, you can save yourself months of effort in attracting your first 1,000 subscribers. In the future, I’m considering launching a new self-improvement blog exclusively with advertising and then doing a case study to prove just how effective it is.

Hi vicky

I just posted that as the best response for you.

I understand what you asking for, but is that type of blogger with extreme traffic the right option for you.

I read alot of Jon Morrow smartblogger(former Problogger), Neil patel, Quicksprout, Brian Dean and Copyblogger articles.

One thing they have taught me for my own blog is that there are a lot of ways to build traffic and subscribes for ones blog, and that what works for one might not necessary work for another.

In Nigerian blog's, i have noticed that our main focus is on attracting tons of traffic and growing traffic for our blogs, albeit not the right kind of traffic. This why you see a lot of blogs who focus on on niche i.e Agro, having posts and articles on them about tech, gossip and entertainment. because thats what they believe is the big traffic turner for them.

Then they include so many ads that have no relevance with their site or their niche, sometimes this pays off with a high spike in unique and New visitors, but their bounce rate is also so high and their conversion and click through rate so low. Since aside from the tech or gossip post, their visitor wasn't interested in their ads or what their site was truly about.

Since the course of starting my blog http://the-ahamefulas.com , i have used some of neil's, jons' inbound, growth hacker and a lot of other internet marketers info to set it up and run it.

True it falls under one of those blogs that Jon stated that no matter what can't seem huge traffic, This i understand, as tons of traffic wasn't the reason i set up my blog.

I set it up for the persona's i have researched that are looking for the right info in that business niche and will pay for that info. i know that these persona's overall monthly search on google are between 370-550 and on bBing are 200-300. Thats a total of about 550 -850 users looking for solutions i offer per month.

Because out of that monthly number, i work on converting 50% of them to subscribers and 3-5% to customers.

For me, its better to focus on making my site more inbound focused than ton of traffic focused.

I understand that this might not work for you Vicky. but i would advice you try it and see what results you get.

I think you need to see my site www.newsphases.com

The main thing is not gathering traffic because my site seeks to create an awareness which Africa lacks....

You might not understand what am saying .... but many people are suffering today and I want my blog to stretch a helping hand unto them..

Thats why I need to find ways to meet them....

Hi vicky (Peter sam)

i have taken a look at your site and i like that it focuses on the health care niche. Which is a good one and a really good niche to go for.

Truth, there are a lot of people suffering from medical issues and there is a need to create awareness for it.

The question is how can your site create that awareness?

1.The way to do it is by finding people who are interested in this lack of awareness and are willing to help

2.These people will have to come from both Nigeria and the rest of the world

3.They would have to be people who are geniuely interested in helping to change the status quo

4.They would also have to have the finance and funding for effecting the required change.

5.They may work for a group or organisation that can help gather more funds and people of like minds.

The million dollar questions are

How do you find these people?
what kind of Persona's do these people fit?
where do they hang out on the web?
whats their job profile?
What organisations do they work for?
Why would they like to get involved?

Once you can answer these questions.

Then the next thing is
1. Draft content that is unique to your site(Blog posts) that these kind of people will be interested in
2. Optimize the your content and posts with the keywords these people use.(with a friendly dose of call to actions and opt-in forms)
3. Promote the content in places they frequent.
4. Send outreach emails and messages to them(facebook, twitter, linkedin) about what you have written and ask them to share.

The above questions may seem like impossible questions, but they are questions that make people go to google or bing for answers. Try see what you can learn about Persona(readers persona's) and how you can find develop the reader persona for your blog niche.

p.s

I like your current content but it might need keyowrd optimization. So that it focuses on what people are searching for and like me your traffic comes from nairaland and social media, which are good places to grow any blog niche related to nigeria.

Please kindly give your recommendation, suggestion and criticism. I'll be so glad to lear from my mistakes.

nice blog... By arrangement, u mean what? Pls break it down maam. Thanks alot

Hi slim

By arrangement he means you have to get rid of those options in your side bar.

As I presume you done use them.

Go to your widget option under appearance and remove the options that are not relevant I. E

Meta, log in and categories. And the double search.

Use wp-admin to login in to your site or just add it at the end of your url. I. E .com/wp-admin/ this should get you to the administration panel of your WordPress site.

Here click on appearance and click on widgets the check your page and post widgets to remove what you don't want.

Your site speed Is also a tad slow. But since your running a free WordPress blog, speeding it up might be a problem without plugins.

Hope that helps.

You can try some of the Nigerian hosts, I used hostgator before I found out about cheaper naija host companies.

Wow nice site.

Love the arrangement and optimization for mobile.

You did a good job with it so going for absense is a good option.

But also try affiliate marketing for some games and do some paid game downloads as well.

Nicely done

Nice site bruv.

But I bother that your in a niche that's already over flogged and flooded.

The lifestyle, event and entertainment niche in Nigeria is just over covered by too many people. Making it a lot of work for a blogger to try and catch up with number 1-10 on Google.

You could do a lot of social share, but it will only work were your content is new and exclusive to you, before its then copied by the other thousand and one other blogs that cover the same niche.

But it's brings in the daily traffic, just not the traffic that will click ads.

Still, love the site setup and theme arrangement.

Thanks for your heads up! Well the idea is to get exclusive content though! I sent you a DM already!

Just wanna ask 1 or 2 personal questions. But wait oh! Do I have entertainment niche? I thought I was doing just lifestyle! LOL!

Later on though, when the blog becomes elf-sustaining, I intend to move into photo evangelism! It is capital intensive, so I'm keeping it on a low!
