As a Nigerian federal soldier, General Alabi Isama was captured by the Biafran army and was showed mercy. He was re-kitted and recruited into the Biafran army instead of being killed; his most likely fate if he had been identified as a ‘northern’ soldier was death. He later deserted the Biafran Army and rejoined the federal side, after which he was jailed at Kirikiri maximum prison for suspicious treasonable activities. The imprisonment also turned out to be a saving grace as he could have lost his life along with several Nigerian troops who perished while attempting to cross Asaba River under the command of Murtala Mohammed 2nd Division during the war. The Biafran troups were commanded by Gen. Joseph "Hannibal" Achuzia, leader of the dreaded Biafran 3rd Marine Commandos.

Therefore, Alabi Isama is alive today due to the mercies of Biafran Officers. A respect he still habours in him till tomorrow.
