According to an eyewitness who is on his way to Makurdi from the PDP convention in PortHarcourt:

"We just came upon this accident after Umuahia, before Okigwe, involving a commercial bus in a head-on collision with a goods truck.

"Most of the passengers, including children, were still trapped deeply inside the bus, while the lifeless bodies of others were strewn around the accident scene as at the time of this report." He wrote.

Peace Mass...again!! Thousands of people have rested in peace travelling in Peace Mass buses!!!

...& FRSC men have been advocating for installation of Speed limiting devices in commercial vehicles! Can we see how right they are?? Please, avoid overspeed & always caution your driver when he's reckless, or u can report to any security official along the road...or better still, call 122 (FRSC Emergency Number) & rport

let me sound like a superstitious nigerian-
PEACE MASS TRANSIT uses people for rituals, the oga of PMT is a ritualist. Thats why they are ALWAYS having accidents. PMT has a high rate of accidents, and i dont even think they are the biggest interstate operators nationwide.

1st of all, they are the most patronised & d4 d biggest

2nd, your theory only works when the drivers dont stick to rules...i have been driving 4 like say 15 years without any incidence! I give God the glory...but He wouldn't have sheltered me from all dangers on d road if i were always reckless!!!

speed limiting devices will do little or nothing to curb the high rate of accidents on Nigerian roads. do you realise MOST of this drivers, at least the ones Peace mass transit uses, are illiterates?, totally untrained in driving, and dont even know road signs? These people do not even attend driving schools.
To hell with roadsafety! they are all part of the problem. Ever tried getting a drivers license? do you know what d due procedure is? do you know what is done in roadsafety? they liaise/connive with driving schools to give u a driving school certificate whether or not u attended, at a fee!
do you realise there are not good enough roads as well? from this accident i can infer the road is a single carriageway, maybe the bus driver tried to overtake or something? there are not many good roads, with multiple lanes on both sides in this country!

Over: above limits
Speed: the rate @ which distance is covered
So, overspeeding is when d rate @ which u r moving is above limits....comprènde?

So, when you drive along any road above 100km/hr, itz OVER-speeding...other classes of roads have their own speed limits notwithstanding

don't you think it may be due to poor maintenance culture for their vehicles, rather than ritualistic superstition?

personally, and even factually, i think is due to the drivers they employ. trust me.

This life ehn!

Too bad you can never see death coming. None of these deceased people would never have thought the bus they are enter would have this kind of outcome on the journey. This is why I fear to travel by road. We have some maniacs behind Steering wheels plying Nigerian roads everyday + the condition of the roads = Hell No for Me!

RIP to the deceased..

Now, i wnt delve into the FRSC embroglio here...they can defend themselves, I think. But for d phrase, "speed limiting device will do little or nothn...", i find it somewat naive. Now, look @ this: why must we shoot above our speed limits if d diff in arrival time btw a 100km/hr veh. & a 150km/hr veh. for a 150km journey could just b a few mins!!!
For d 100km/hr bus, it'l take him 1hr. 30mins
For d 150km/hr bus, it'l take him 1hr
Now, bearing in mind that there are so many stops & ditches on the way, the diff can not b mor dan 10mins
In addition, the risk of accident increases & ability to control reduces for d 150km/hr guy...!!!

So, with d Speed limiter, u r restricted to a max. acceleration of 100km/hr...if u like depress ur throttle to the fullest! The device conditions the injector to mix a certain amt of fuel & air that'l always give 100km/hr speed, ignoring your efforts in pumping more fuel!

The vehicle, according to the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), was on its way to Abia State from Enugu State, when it had
the head on collision with the trailer at Ofeme Junction on the Umuahia Road axis.
Aside the dead, two other passengers in the 18-seater bus with number plate, AKL895YY, sustained varying degrees of injuries

trailer driver fleeing the scene immediately after causing the carnage.
An eyewitness who was one of the first persons to get to the scene of the accident » , said some of the passengers were
mangled in the bus while others were thrown on the road as a result of the forceful impact.

Another witness, said 13 persons died in the crash, blaming it on the recklessness of the trailer driver.
“The bus driver was driving at a good speed because he was almost at Umuahia which is the final destination. It was the driver
of the trailer that lost control of the vehicle because he was speeding and suddenly, it derailed into the path of the bus.
Thirteen passengers, including the bus driver, died instantly. Only three persons were rescued alive and two of them are in
critical conditions,” he said.
