EPISODE 1

THE BENSON’S RESIDENCE

The coffee machine beeped to a halt and I moved over to the cabinet top to switch it off.

Zoe loved hot coffee whenever she came back from school no matter the hot weather and I always gave it to her- the apple of my eye!

Humming Joshua Bamiloye’s ‘there are forces against my soul’ song, I went into the store, picked up 5 pieces of big yellow plantain and came back into the kitchen.

‘I am gonna make my baby fresh sweet chips. My little baby’ I said aloud, smiling happily.

If you asked me what gave me joy to still remain in my unfortunate marriage to Zack, then, I would say it was my only child, Zoe! I loved and adored her!

As I started turning the almost brown chips in the frying pan, I heard the honks of Zoe’s school bus.

“My baby is here” I said aloud, moved to the window, drew the curtain and then I saw her as she stepped into the compound, looking as cute as always.

I quickly drained the first round of the chips and then introduced the other set into the hot, boiling oil.

“Hello mum, I am home” I heard her voice as she scampered into her room.

“Welcome my baby girl. How was school today?” I asked with a raised voice

“Cool” came her short response. She must be very tired!

“Make sure you pray o” I shouted again

“Ok mum” she replied softly.

Few minutes later, she came into the kitchen in a beautiful white camisole and a short blue corduroy skirt and my eyes widened as I saw her.

“Zoe! Why would you wear something clean when you have not even had your bath, huh!” I exclaimed.

She looked at me briefly, sauntered to the coffee machine, poured out some and sipped it without looking at me.

My ten year old Zoe would always behave like an adult!

But something is not right as whenever she looked at me briefly, she had something bothering her but I had told her severally that this could be very disrespectful.

“Zoe, isn’t it you I am talking to?” I asked her loudly and she looked up at me and smiled briefly.

“Your respect thing again shae? Ok mum, good afternoon. Howdy?” she said and looked into my face with a ‘Isn’t that enough’ look on her face. I saw the dark circles under her eyes and I gasped.

“Are you okay?” I asked and she looked away quickly.

“Is there something you are keeping away from me?” I asked but she did not reply and instead downed another cup of coffee. I looked on, amazed.

“Mum, it seems the plantain chips are burning” she said and I turned quickly to the gas cooker, turned the knob and quickly used the colander to bring out the chips.

I served the chips inside a small salad bowl and Zoe came around to get it from me.

“Thank you mummy. You know I really do love you” she said as she walked out of the kitchen. I followed her intently

“And I love you so well too baby but you know my heart aches when you keep a secret no matter how little from me.”

“Mummy, you too like gist!” she said, giving me a half smile. I smiled too but it was short-lived.

“Is Mandy fighting you again?” I asked and she shook her head in the negative

“Ok, but she called you a proud girl again?”
“No mum, you know I already told you that I don’t give a damn what anybody calls me. I already told Mandy that if she calls herself my best friend and still tells me I am proud, it would all be over. I don’t condone that indiscipline and she has actually complied” she talked on, her gist mode activated. I smiled appreciating the fact that she talked like an adult.

“But don’t do things that would make her…” I was saying when she cut me short

“Say I am proud shae? What have I been doing? Mum, see o, ‘Give me your assignment to dub’ and I said ‘I can’t give you’. ‘Follow me to watch the drama’ and I say ‘I am not going’. ‘Ok, come to my house on Saturday’ she said again ‘No I can’t come, that’s the day I read’. The conclusion was then ‘Zoe, you are proud!’ Judge those instances well mum, do they signify pride?” she asked, really gesticulating

“No dear. I appreciate the fact that at your age, you are able to say your mind without anyone affecting your decision. That is good. Clap for yourself” I said and she gave me a funny look and then chuckled

“Mum, who does that? Clap for myself at my age and marital status? No mum. I have outgrown that” she said as she chewed her chips. I tickled her and she started laughing vehemently

“That’s what your age mates still do so. You are still a kid my dear. Don’t say because you are in Jss2 at ten, you are a grown girl o.” I said and she laughed.

“Mum, don’t say that jhur. I am a big girl o” she said again, winking at me.
God, can you just help me to train my own daughter well? I prayed silently. I dreaded the thought that I had failed as a mother.

“Zoe, can I ask you a question?” I asked and she nodded in the affirmative.

She dropped the salad dish on the glassy center table, sat close to me and placed her head on my laps. I rubbed her chin.

“Ask mum” she said

“Are you proud to be my daughter? If you are asked to choose another mother tomorrow…” I was saying when she cut me short, sitting up with such alacrity that almost scared me.

“Mum, I will choose you!” she said, nodding continuously. I looked on at her with my mouth suspended

“Mum, there are lots of things many of my friends can’t tell their own mother because it is either they beat them blue black or they take them to church for deliverance but for you, I can tell you anything. I can run towards you with poop smeared all over my body but you would still hug me and tell me with love ‘Daughter, you smell’. That kind of mother is rare. Mum, it would be you and you again a million years to come” she said and I was so pleased. I pulled her close to me and pecked her cheeks.

“I love you my daughter. Thank you for the encouragement” I said and she smiled

“Mum, never for once should you doubt your quality of good motherhood. You are good inside out” she said again as if to say she was the mother and I was the child! Zoe won’t kill me with laughter!

“Ok ma” I responded and she smiled and placed her head on my laps again. I picked up the remote control and started flipping through the different channels

“Mum, there is something I want to ask you” she said and sat up again. I reduced the volume of the television to the barest minimum and she held my hands

EPISODE 2

“Mum, there is something I want to ask you” she said and sat up again. I reduced the volume of the television to the barest minimum and she held my hands

“Mum, is it bad for me to have a boyfriend at this age?” she asked and my eyes widened in shock. I opened my mouth to say whatever would come out but she rubbed my hands softly.

“Just say yes or no” she said and then pursed her lips

“Erm, see dear, you know…” I stammered on and on. If I said ‘Yes’ she would say ok but do I know what she would go and do behind me? If I said ‘no’ then I was opening the gate of immorality to my young girl.

These high school musicals tho! I almost lamented loudly.

I looked at my daughter’s expectant face and quickly clad a wide smile as my heart pounded loudly.

“See my love, what is your definition of a boyfriend?” I asked, picking my words

“Mum, ok, lemme explain to you. Someone that would stand up to support you when everyone probably bullies you in class; someone that would call, text and exchange gifts with you; someone you can look at and say ‘I love you’”

My heart burst out.

I am in soup!

Had I not made a serious mistake when I enrolled my only daughter in the school of the rich and the elites?

From where has this girl learnt all these?

My heart raced on and on but I could do nothing at that point. Her innocent face looked on at me expecting more soothing advice. I pulled her up to her feet and smiled at her. I surveyed my daughter from head to toes.

She had really become grown!

She had all the curves.

She was rotund, beautiful with very long hair- her inheritance from her Fulani father.

Her breasts were also standing hopefully on her chest. She looked like a 15 year old!

She had almost become an obese two years ago until I decided it was time to come back to Nigeria. The life in France really spoilt her!

“Mum, talk now. Why are you just running your eyes over my body like that? Are you a pervert?” she asked jokingly and I smacked her lightly across the face. I pulled her to my laps and placed my hand on her chest.

“My daughter already has a suitor? You want mum to be a grandma so fast?” I asked, trying to lighten the mood. She gasped and looked into my face

“Mum, see, it’s not what you think o. I am as decent as anything. I am even the one that tries my best to encourage and advise my mates to desist from doing bad” she said, so assuredly and I looked so shocked.

‘What does she know? What does my daughter know oh Lord?’ I asked myself and she laughed.

“Mum, this one that you are looking shocked…let’s forget about that part and please let’s go back to my question” she said and I swallowed hard, trying really hard to conceal my fear and shock.

“You have never told me anything about any bad thing going on in your class Zoe!” I said passionately.

“Mummy, it’s not all the eyes see or the ears hear that the mouth must report. That’s why we have a pair each of the eyes and ears but one of mouth.” She preached on and winked at me, brushing her petite finger across my nose. I shook my head vigorously.

“No dear. I want to know everything o. Your mum isn’t a witch. I am a presenter, I can learn from your entire gist. Do you promise to gist me daily?” I asked and she laughed loudly hugging me so tight

“Look for a mum that treats her daughter as a friend, listen to her gist and still crave for more gist and I will show you my mother.” She said as she gave me a ‘high five’

“Don’t worry mum. I will tell you later. Let’s face my own issue now” she said almost anxiously.

“Ok boo, what exactly do you want from me?”

“Lemme be frank with you mum. You know I am the youngest in that class and all of them know, although I am bigger than most of them.”

“Yes daughter. I know” I said looking into her face. She would never feel bad for her stature. In fact, she loved it! I really taught and instilled in her boldness and confidence plus love for oneself.

“Mum, to be frank, I have a crush in my class” she dropped the bomb and my chest rose up with pain arising from it.

“Crush? What’s a crush?”

“Mum, it’s a Sam. He is the Class rep and I am the assistant. He behaves matured, he is handsome, he doesn’t do bad things, he only goes on his way and even for me, he plays hard to get” she said and I really could not help myself as I let out a serious sigh.

But she didn’t look at me.

“It has been like that for long until yesterday when we were in the Biology lab when he walked over to me and dropped a note in my hand and ran away.” She continued with satisfaction on her face.

“A note?”

“Yes mum, a note. I have kept it safe in my wardrobe. It says ‘I like your kind of girl and I won’t mind if you don’t, to be your boyfriend’ and mum, I walked out of the lab into the restroom to read over and over again! I could tell nobody. I was so excited” she said, sighed and stood up from my laps to the window side.

What should I do?

What kind of a thing is this?

What sort of a Sam has gotten the premature heart of my kid?

What do these kids understand oh Lord!

These were the questions that ran through my head as I looked at her. If I beat her now, of what use would that be? If I go to their school tomorrow to report Sam to the school authority, of what use is that?

Lord, please teach me the right step to take! I prayed as I looked up at the ceiling as if my life depended on it.

“Daughter, tell Sam that you are inviting him for dinner in your house on Saturday” I said and her eyes widened as she ran to me.

“Mum! For real?” she asked, smiling widely. My heart broke but I smiled and nodded in the affirmative.

“Yes for real. Let’s meet him and see if it’s a devil’s proposal” I said. I didn’t know where that idea dropped from but it dropped anyway. She stopped in her tracks, her smile fading away.

“A devil’s proposal?” she asked and I nodded.

“Yes dearie. On many occasions, the devil proposes to us daily. We either say yes or no to the proposal. This is a proposal from someone, not necessarily Sam but when he comes, by the look on his face, his word to you and all, I will know if it’s a devil’s proposal or just a juvenile stuff” I said and with her mouth suspended, still looking at me, I knew she wanted more.

“See, the devil can tell you ‘hiss at your mum’. It’s just a proposal, you either say yes or no” I explained further and she nodded, closing her mouth.

“I understand! Like when Dad would come home and shout at you, then you would send me inside without replying him. You were saying ‘no’ to the devil’s proposal” she gave her own illustration and painful as it were that my own daughter made an illustration as this, it was the truth!

I could do nothing but nod!

“But mum, why does Dad shout at you all the time?” she asked and as the wave of pain rose in my heart, I pulled her close to my chest if her chubby cheeks could just calm my heavy heart.

“It’s just a devil’s proposal to him for which he said yes. That’s why we have to pray for him the more so that he would say no the proposal one day” I said and Zoe nodded

“Mum, that’s true. I just remembered something. I want to tell you to tell Mummy Mandy to be like you” she said and I pulled her up, looking into her face.

‘What?’ I asked

“Mandy likes a boy in my class and fortunately, it is a mutual thing…” she kept on saying.

What is so fortunate about this whole saga girl! I fumed in my heart.

“Ok?” I replied, asking her to continue

“Mandy got home yesterday and told her mum about it. Jesus! Mummy, if you see her face today, it was so swollen; her mum beat hell out of her! Her mum called her names and even dragged her by the clothes to school today. She had even made an apron for Mandy that she wore. She wrote ‘If you see this girl with a boy, call this number…’ and they brought out the boy on the assembly ground and gave him 6 strokes of the cane! All because she is a pastor’s daughter. Ah!” she said, shaking her head.

I could understand the plight of Mrs. Otito as her first daughter in SS 3 had reportedly been impregnated by a teacher in her school. Little wonder she took this one personal but she went too far!

“Mum, see, today, the boy still sent her messages of consolation and all. Does the mum think the apron and the lashes would stop them? That is why I love you. When one tells you something, though it meets you in shock and you pause like for an umpteen time, you would still come out with happiness” she said and I smiled.

Thank God I had not failed her test if not; I would have only lost my daughter into the hands of friends.

My phone rang from the kitchen and Zoe ran to get it!

“Mum Zack” she shouted as she ran inside the sitting room. I had instant tummy ache at the mention of that name.

I had always hated my mother-in-law!

I pressed the receiver and placed the phone to my ears, an intense frown on my face.

“Hello, good evening ma”

“Evening. Are you home?” she asked

“Yes ma”

“Prepare the guest room for me and also prepare pounded yam. I am at the bus stop already”

“Bus stop!” I was saying when she dropped the call. That is like a stone throw from my house. How did she expect me to meet up?

“This woman sha! Must she come here! Oh God!” I almost cried aloud, tugging at the throw pillows.

I felt Zoe’s hand on my shoulder and I looked into her face. I had forgotten that she was there.

“Mum, it’s the devil’s proposal and you are saying yes!” she said and I smiled and patted her head.

“Thanks for the reminder dear. Now, rush into your bathroom, shower and read your ‘higher everyday’ I will ask you questions on it afterwards.

“Ok mum” she said as she scurried away. I shook my head regrettably.

I really do wish this was a devil’s proposal that I could resist!

But for real, I hate my Mother-in-law with passion!

“Oh! I have forgotten to ask my daughter what bad things she said are happening in her class!”

EPISODE 3

THE BENSON’S RESIDENCE

This is real!
This is me!!
I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be now
Gonna let the light shine on me, now I’ve found,
Who I am, there’s no way to hold it in
No more hiding who I wanna be
This is me!

Zoe sang Camp Rock’s ‘This is me’ so beautifully with her chubby right ‘paw’ as the microphone coupled with correct and thrilling gesticulations.

Few minutes ago, I had hurt my finger with the cabinet door in a bid to hurriedly prepare my mother-in-law’s pounded yam.

I screamed in pain as I felt the pain deeply in my bones, quickly applied first aid before settling down in the sitting room to allow the air condition calm my sudden perspiration down.

Feeling my pain as if it was hers, Zoe decided to mimic Demi Lovato in that high school musical to entertain me and I really enjoyed watching her sing without mincing words forgetting my pain for some minutes.

‘But for goodness’ sake, where is mama? She said she was at the bus stop already and its past two hours now. Na wa o’ I thought to myself as I blew air on the hurt finger.

‘Mummy, lemme quickly rush in, have a forty winks, then I will be back. I need to calm this brain. Its overworked and I still have more essays to write today’ she said, pecked me on the forehead and scurried inside as if being pursued.

‘I wish I could just have one more child but what about my unfortunate husband’s low sperm count?’ I thought allowed and hissed very loudly despising my husband the more.

As I started drifting into sleep, the honking of his car woke me up. I heard the gate opened and his car drove in as the ‘Welcome Oga’ greeting from Yakubu rang loud and clear.

I adjusted on the settee again, clutching the pillows to myself and pretending to be asleep. The door opened and I heard his footsteps. I slightly opened the windows of my eyes as I beheld him. I shook my head with great sadness as he knelt down before the centre table to pray.

‘Filthy prayers. Foolish unfortunate man’ I muttered.

Many people had told me to stop cursing or insulting this miserable being but I couldn’t no matter how hard I tried.

It got worse and worse!

He stood up from his kneeling position, glanced over me briefly and he glided over to the dining room. I heard him pull the chair, sit down and opening the dishes before I sprung up suddenly.

‘You can’t touch that food’ I shouted as I walked with speed to the dining room to prevent him.

‘I thought you were sleeping’ he said, laughing mischievously

‘That’s your cup of tea! You cannot eat this food and that is final!’ I screamed and he started washing his hands in preparation to start eating.

‘Zack, are you deaf? What exactly is your problem? You cant eat this food because…’

‘You made it for my mother’ he said in a very confident way that I felt like killing him!

‘Can someone tell me what this mean please?’ I asked no one in particular.

‘I realised that you fear your mother-in-law more than your husband and since I have missed home-made food made by my proud and haughty wife, I told the person you feared to help me scare you into preparing the food for me. So, it’s mine, not anybody’s’ he said, scoffing and my sight went blur.

I took some steps backward and fell into the chair and stared at the man before me as he swallowed the pounded yam.

What accursed mother and son!

Cursed be the day our paths crossed !

You both played this prank and allowed me hurt my finger?

What kind of revenge can I give to this man so that he would know that I might be a Christian but I know my right and I fight for it.

Suggestions started flowing

Strangle his neck so that the pounded yam in his throat would come out through his nose

Just slap him and leave him with a starry vision and a hot feeling

Lock up his shirt and start a fight

Drag the dish from his presence and break in on the floor.

And I said yes to the latter proposal because immediately, as if controlled by some forces, I carried the dishes at the same time and down they went, shattering to pieces.

‘You are a fool to ever think that I would just stay back and not fight back. Stupid fool!’ I exclaimed, giving him a dangerous look. His eyes, nose and mouth were widened as he was so shocked.

Even I was shocked at my behaviour.

I didn’t love him nor respect him but one thing I couldn’t do was look into his face when he argued with me, insulted me or even beat me. I always respected God! But no more!

‘I am awaken!’ I exclaimed very weirdly, looking for a broken piece of the dish on the floor. Zack saw that and hurriedly shifted his chair and off he ran out of the house.

I took few deep breaths before I sat on one of the chairs and cried bitterly.

‘Mum, you just said ‘yes’ to the devil’s proposal’ Zoe’s voice came but I could not look into her face because ‘yes’ was what I was determined to continue saying for a while.
But I cried on bitterly yet!

Zoe was beautifully clad in a floral A-shaped gown. Her hair was combed and plaited into a pony tail. She looked expectant as she fumbled with her Barbie doll.

‘Are you scared?’ I asked her. She smiled and shook her head

‘No mum. Scared? Not at all’ she emphasised and that alone confirmed that my baby girl was scared or shy!

‘You said his mum would be bringing him?’ I asked and she nodded.
I sighed and shook my head.

‘God knows what kind of parents we have these days. Coming to drop your son at a girl’s place just because he likes her. Nawa o’ I thought.

It Continues Still...

Episode 4

I stood up as I heard the gate opened and a car drove in.

‘Wow! It’s a huge jeep’ I exclaimed loudly and looked across to my daughter who was really blushing. I went to sit down, looking at her with her ‘Better comport yourself’ look.

She shook her head and stretched.

‘I am okay mum’ she said trying to tell me her mind was at rest.

‘Peace be unto this house!’ a very familiar voice announced from outside. I looked at my daughter with a knowing look.

‘Who could that be? The voice sounds so so familiar’ I told no one in particular.

‘Yeah please come in’ I replied and the door opened widely. A boy entered the room, neatly clad in white and blue denim shirt and trousers. He flashed me a very beautiful set of teeth and I smiled

‘No wonder!’ I muttered.

‘Good day ma.’ He greeted, genuflecting respectfully.

‘How are you my dear?’ I asked in a cool way, looking across my daughter’s face but she was suddenly engrossed in the magazine on the table.

See shyness!

Juvenile foolishness!

But my gaze shifted away from them too soon when the familiar voice sounded again.

‘I said it! C’mon, I knew it!’ she exclaimed and I stood up as I beheld Liz Anjolaoluwa in front of me. She was looking really radiant in her very long glossy white gown that had a gold veil on the neck.

‘Liz!’ I exclaimed and she laughed happily as she came to hug me. She had really grown big and more beautiful.

She has a happy family! She married Dave at least! I thought to myself, not too happy to see Liz, at least not in this state.

‘Yes o my dear sister. Its Liz.’ She said as we watched on. I had to save this situation so I laughed.

‘Wow! I can see Dave is really taking good care of you’ I said and she smiled happily

‘It’s vice versa. I am taking good care of him too. You are not looking bad o my friend. You look very rich and Behind. See your gigantic building sef’ she whined me on.

The day I passed in front of their newest house in Lekki, I almost sank in the ground. It looked really mighty so saying my house is beautiful is an exaggeration.

‘How is Zack?’ she asked and I hissed

‘Lets leave that for now Liz. So its your son, Sam that loves my daughter?’ I asked and Liz laughed heartily.

I really envied her. See her beautiful fresh neck!

‘Or lets say what has your daughter done to my son?’ she joked and we laughed.

‘I came here out of curiosity. He had been saying Zoe Zoe Zoe for many days now. I asked him fully about Zoe and he said she is a Fulani-Yoruba girl, she is beautiful, she just came back from France, her surname is Al-Makura. I just concluded it was someone related to you if it wasn’t you. See, Nita, I have really really missed you. I had wanted to see you so badly’ she said on and I only smiled.

‘Thank you’ I whispered and she held my hands, looking into my face intently

‘Is everything ok with you?’ she asked, lovingly and I blinked intermittently to avoid my tears from falling.

‘Zoe, could you take Sam round your compound? He is your guest today’ she said and the duo left the room shyly.

‘Nita, what is the problem? Are you crying?’ she asked and I turned away from her.

‘Yes I am crying. Liz, I am not happy to see you’ I blurted out and Liz stood up, sat on the chair facing me and looked shocked.

‘Really! Why?’ she asked

‘I had longed planned to marry Dave but the way God worked it out, you were the one chosen. I could do nothing about it.’ I said foolishly

‘It is God’s handiwork. It is unchangeable. But after about six months, you also came to say that you have prayed through. I counselled you then not to hurry but you said you were very sure he was the one. Aren’t you enjoying Zack?’ she asked and I broke down in tears

‘There are many things I can’t tell you now Liz but I was only in a hurry to get married and show you that you are not the best woman on earth though Dave chose you’ I said again. I was so surprised at how blunt I was but Liz smiled

‘Really!’ she exclaimed

‘Yes. I went to Nasarawa state, to the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa to be precise to cover a unique news. After the programme, I went through some villages. When I got to Toto, I saw a crowd wailing. I parked and saw a woman convulsing with her son crying beside her, speaking very good English’ I narrated the saddest occasion of my life to my greatest rival who never competed with me but whom I had competed with all my life.

‘So, what happened?’ she asked me with concerned

‘I helped them to the hospital and took care of the mother. Then, listening to how they had glided from grace to grass, I was moved with pity. After some weeks of being attached to them, I proposed to Zack. He agreed and I bought the ring which he used for the formal proposal’ I revealed my ugly secret and Lizzy could not close her mouth.

‘Are you very serious right now?’ she asked and I nodded sheepishly

‘I was in a hurry, in competition with you and I was blinded by pity for Zack and his mum. Those were the reasons why I married Zack. And now, its hell!’ I cried out and Liz looked on, bewildered the more.

‘Hell? Are you for real?’

‘Really for real! Why? I will tell you. I met some really unfortunate people who advised me to be submissive to Zack and therefore change the ownership of my properties to his’ I said again, shaking my heads and cursing my district pastor for misleading me.

‘God! It’s a good thing to do but you could have been more patient’ Liz said painfully.

‘Patience? My pastor told me it must be instant. My landed properties, my shares, my media company, everything is in his name now.’

‘Ok?’ she asked me for more and I continued digging.

‘It was time to get pregnant. You gave to Blossom and I wasn’t even pregnant. I was really monitoring you o. Then, I secretly conducted fertility test on him and realised he was infertile. Low sperm count.’

‘Jesus!’ she exclaimed, her arms folded in great attention.

‘I went outside and got pregnant’ I burst out and Liz jumped up, her hands on her head. I went on.

‘I didn’t regret it though. There are many baby companies outside now. I paid one of the men, got pregnant and had Zoe!’

‘My great father!’ Liz exclaimed further sinking into her chair. I went on.

‘One day, we had a big fight and I confessed he was impotent and that Zoe wasn’t his. He was mad at me and when I told him to pack out of my house, he did obediently. Little did I know I had bounded myself by the transfer of my properties? I was locked out of all of my properties o!’ I cried out in anguish the more.

‘Wow! Jesus Christ! This is seriously serious!’ Lizzy exclaimed, somewhat heart broken

‘I had to beg him to move back in. What I do in this marriage now is endurance. The person I picked from inside the gutters?! I really made a mistake. A huge one at that!’ I sobbed until my heart could take it no more.

‘What a faulty foundation!’ she exclaimed

‘My sister, in this situation of yours, you need to tread softly. These days, people are just killing one another. Don’t let this be heard of you. Let me lend you what Sam says to me when I am probably doing something contrary. He would say ‘Mum, that’s the devil’s proposal. Don’t say yes’ and I would be calm and think!’ I laughed loudly and sniffed wetly

‘I taught Zoe and Zoe must have taught him. I know the truth my sister. I can preach the truth but the practical, I don’t think I can do it anymore. If I am let alone with him in this house, I will kill him!’ I said and didn’t regret it. My heart was hardened.

‘Stop that in Jesus’ name. Going against God’s will brings about frustration but my sister, its your cross. You have to bear it diligently if perhaps he might be saved through you. Don’t give up yet’

‘I never bargained for enduring my marriage. I want to only enjoy it. This is the opposite. If he dies, I will gain my properties once again, have the free chance to get married and then live well again with my daughter.’
‘The devil is talking to you against God’s will. I really need to do something about this. Thank God for this childish desires of our kids. I have to get going now. I will be back’ she said, came close to me, gave me a comforting hug which didn’t have effect on my stony heart. She shook her head and off she went.

After a while, Zoe came in and saw my swollen face.

‘Mum, what happened to you? Why is she going that fast?’ she asked and I shot her a quick, steadfast look. She was shocked

‘You have been crying?’ she asked but I didn’t respond.

She went away and came back with an ice pack.

‘Use this on your face mum. You need it’ she said and I collected it from her, forced a smile and pressed it against my face.

‘Mum, you didn’t ask about my talk with Sam’ she said and I felt guilty. I extended my hands to her but they were so weak

‘Tell me, what did you discuss?’ I asked faintly

‘To cut the long story short, we have decided to cut the crap of boyfriend girlfriend thing. We will be very good friends though. We want to fight and say ‘no’ to the devil’s proposal.’ Her little mouth went on and on.

My heart raced on as I sighed over and over again.

Here was a little girl with a strong determination to say no to the devil. What about me? Am I not going to do the same?

Watch out for the next Episode

Episode 5

As I tucked Zoe into her bed under the snug duvet and sat down beside her bed, I felt her temperature and pecked her forehead. She kept on making seizing sighs in her sleep as I had beaten her earlier on.

The only time Zoe was sweet was when she behaved matured but when she really acted her age, it was usually the opposite.

I was not in a very good mood since morning but I still tried my best to pick her up from school since she didn’t like the school bus.

On the way, she saw some vendors hawking these locally made ice-cram and yoghurt and she kept pestering me to buy for her. I kept mute because I didn’t know what to say to her but when she started buzzing in my ears like a swarm of bee, I shouted at her.

“Zoe! Zoe! Zoe! How many times did I call you?” I almost screamed. She covered her ears and looked away in irritation.

“Three” she replied

“Please, let me concentrate on driving. I spent how many hours last week making you ice-cream and yoghurt at home. You still have many bowls at home and now you are telling me nonsense!” I exclaimed and she looked at me, surprised.
That’s it o daughter! Every day is not Christmas.

But she complained on and on and said she wanted the cheap ones the vendors were selling.

Well, to please her, though I was so angry that I made full creamy ones for her that were already frozen at home and she was choosing the chemically sweetened one, I parked the car and went to buy a packet that contained 12 pieces.

As I dropped it on her laps, her eyes shone with delightful shock.

“Now, can I drive on in peace without disturbance from anyone?” I asked and with a mouth full of creamy liquid, she smiled and nodded.
I drove on in silence. I wished something could silence the raving thoughts in my heart.

I heard about the activities of my husband as a Casanova and really it wasn’t a surprise that he was sleeping around with anything in skirt because I had caught him red-handed with his secretary on two occasions.

It was since that occasion that we had separated rooms and I didn’t allow him to touch me again. I couldn’t bear to allow him infect me with incurable diseases. But listening to many of my staff members today saying he had lain with almost of the women in my organizations, I became very uncomfortable.

With that on my mind, I went to the media organization where I worked. I worked with CNN Nigeria and my name had really become a household name. I was popular!

After an interview session with the Federal Minister of Industrial Relations, he had come close to me and without any restriction, placed a kiss on my lips.

Oh my God!

How do I describe how I felt?

If I said irritably or angry or sad or disgusting and all, I would be lying to you.

I felt happy, tingling, excited and great!

But, when I called back my senses together, I pushed him away. As much as I had not been with a man for about six months now, I was not a call girl or a cheap lassie for some political bigots! The only man I had slept with out of wedlock was the one that I paid to get me pregnant from which I had Zoe and I paid him. I would not even recognize the man if I saw him now.

The minister was furious that I pushed him away and he went to report me to the general manager who lambasted me and said my popularity was getting into my head and that I would have to cooperate if I still wanted my slot!

What a threat! Didn’t he know my stand before?

While all these were happening, my mother-in-law called to say she had really come and that she was going to stay for some days. That spelt trouble for me.

All these on my mind, I was as mad as all the patients in ARO psychiatric centre joined together when Zoe was crying over minute things like Ice-cream.

As I got home and zoomed into the compound, Zoe had slept off, the pack of ice-cream clutched to her chest. She was able to take just 4 of it and there was 8 pieces remaining. I was angry the more. I pulled her inside the house and forced her to gulp the thawed substance down her throat. Her pleas fell on my deaf ears as I held a cane close to her face.

“Next time, when mummy says yes, you will learn that yes would be good for you and not any other option! You have to finish it o” I threatened her.

As she finished the second one, she threw up and it splashed all over the well mopped floor of the sitting room and my clothes were stained too. Then I gave her six strokes of the cane out of anger.

“Don’t be greedy!” I repeated as I beat her and she cried and cried.

As I mopped the sitting room again, the door opened and there she stood, looking remorseful and pouting sadly.

“I am sorry mum” she had said and turned back to her room when she heard no response from me.

Now, I felt so bad for beating my only friend and confidant, and joy, and life, and my everything! I rubbed her cornrows and my heart ached for her.

_____________________

“Nita! Nita o!” my mother -in-law called out and I frowned sadly.
“Yes ma” I replied, switched the bedside lamp off and left the room.

Zack’s mother was seated in the sitting room, her legs were on the stool and she pulled at a piece of a drumstick with lots of broken bones in the deep bowl before her.

“Mama, do you need more drumsticks? We still have lots in the freezer” I said, twisting my mouth. She eyed me and then signaled that I sat down.

“Sit down here” she said and I obeyed.

“Well done mama. I hope your journey was not stressful” I asked, trying hard to be nice. She chuckled

“Thank you o. I know you are just trying to be courteous” she said and laughed and I only arched my eyebrows as I rubbed my hands together in anxiety

God, just help this woman to talk nonsense today!

“Mama, you wanted to say something?” I asked, anxious to leave her presence

“I hope you are not angry about the other day when I asked you to prepare pounded yam and that I said I was already close to the house” she said and laughed so much she started coughing. She brought a handkerchief out and spat into it. I turned my face away and she laughed again

“Your mother!” she exclaimed abusively, lashing her tongue out.

What a childish mother!

“Your husband told me that you have not been cooking for him for some days now and I had to play that prank” she explained on.

Who asked her now sef?!

“Mama, let’s forget about that and let’s talk about something else” I said almost aggressively. I was getting really angry already. She wore a serious face and touched my laps.

“Nita” she called and I became attentive too

“Ma?”

“Are you barren?” she asked and i looked at her from head to toes and eyed her so obviously.

I hissed and she took her hands from off my laps

“Why do you ask our dear fruitful mama?” I asked disdainfully
“Don’t you think you need to give us another child after Hauwa?” she asked. Hauwa was what she called Zoe.

I wished I could scream and say even the Hauwa wasn’t his daughter and that her son was as barren anything!

“Mama, how many children do you have if I may ask?” I started as the spirit of strife descended upon me. She looked at me and became mum, rubbing her fresh leg on the stool

“Mama, can’t you ever be satisfied or grateful to me? I married your son out of pity and I gave your hopeless situations life again. I have my salary job and I am okay with the money paid me there. My businesses that have yielded me a living, I carried all, and gave them under the flag of Christianity to that miserable useless cheat!” I screamed at her and she could not look into my face as she shook her legs.

I didn’t even know if what I was saying was sinking into her medulla oblongata

“Here you are giving me lectures. What lectures should come from your mouth to me! Isn’t it my family and I that we should sit down and lecture, smack and feed your senses with lectures?” I screamed again, my voice shaking furiously.

I didn’t know what kind of human beings these people were! I felt like doing something very evil!

It Continues still...

Episode 6

“Mama, your coming here would be a hell for me. Without you here, your son has made the house a burning furnace and I can’t imagine what would happen if you join. Please leave the house now!” I shouted loud

What kind of a woman added salt to her daughter-in-law’s injury? I knew how Lizzy related with her mother-in-law as sisters.

What destiny is this that I have chosen oh God?

Mama stood up and walked confidently to me. She grabbed me by the neck and pushed me into a seat. I had started shaking and I screamed

“You want to kill me even in my own house?” I cried and she laughed mischievously

“That is what is done to children that lack home training” she said and strangled me the more, her sharp nails digging into my fair skin.

“Jesus! Zoe! Zoe!” I cried out but my daughter was upstairs sleeping.

I can’t die like this oh Lord. I cried out more and more and the door opened suddenly. Zack walked inside and saw the scene.

“Sanu de zoa” his mother welcomed him in hausa language

“Yowa!” he responded

“I need to teach this girl some lessons. She lacks home training” she said and Zack smiled

“Just don’t kill her” He said, carried his briefcase and was about turning to go upstairs when I gathered unequalled strength and I pushed her away with full force. She hit her head on the floor and screamed. Zack dropped his briefcase and rushed to her.

“Do you want to kill her for me? Nita!” he exclaimed, ensured his mum was okay and then walked towards me. I smiled mischievously, charging at him with naked courage

“You want to fight for your mother?” I asked as I charged at him the more. He aimed a blow at me which I dodged successfully. I picked him up, dropped him into the cushion and rained punches on him.

“Die! Die! Die!” I screamed as I hit him. The mother stood up, meaning to hit me again.

I ran upstairs, into her room, dropped her bag and ran back into the sitting room.

As Zack was about to hit me with the flower vase, I took his mother and used her as a shield. She dug her nails into my skin but I endured it as I pulled her out of the sitting room, with her bag in a hand. I pushed her out and threw her bag after her. I ran inside, closed the door and faced the raging Zack.

“I am sure your Fulani spirit has descended upon you. But see, I have many Fulani friends that are not devilish like you but Zack, I want you out of my house this instance.” I shouted as my eyes turned really red that they ached.

“Nita, you are stupid! Do you know what you would lose if this happens. Do you know the repercussion of hitting my mother?” he started again with a dangerous look on his face

“What would you do to me? See, I don’t care anymore. Just leave my house you generation of killers!” I screamed again and he ran towards me, aiming to carry me and probably hit me on the floor. He reeked of alcohol.

“So, you now drink?” I asked, disdainfully

“What right do you have to ask me?” he shouted and I attacked him, held his hands in a lock and pushed him out the house.
“Good riddance to bad rubbish!” I exclaimed and banged the door!

I panted so heavily as I rested my back against the door and allowed my tears flow.

“Oh God! I never prayed for this all my life!” I cried over and over again.

The devil really proposed to me in divers in a lot of ways and I said yes to him.

I rushed to the water dispenser, poured hot water and drank it. As it burnt my lips, tongue and throat, I cried so badly.

I couldn’t even feel the presence of the Holy Ghost. He had forsaken me!

Or you have forsaken him! Something told me and I shook my head vigorously!

“God, please have mercy upon me! I don’t want to kill at all! I am frustrated as it were and I don’t want it again o” I cried out, beating the floor hard.

Was this really how marriage felt? I should have remained single then.

I ran upstairs into my room and scrambled for my phone.
“I need to call this lawyer. Whatever needs to be done must be done” I said to myself.

My parents were lawyers but I had decided not to contact that for marital issues. I had always vowed to show them that Christian marriages could be heaven on earth but see how all just turned against me.

“Hello, please could you link me up to Barrister Adeoye?” I asked

“Who is speaking please?”

“This is Nita Al-Makura. Connect me to the barrister please”

“Ma, he was sacked last week over fraudulent acts.” The voice replied me and my head started sparking.

“What!”

“Ma, but thank God you had moved all your papers from him before this happened” he was saying when I stopped him abruptly as I started seeing stars.

“Move what papers?”

“Your husband and his new lawyer came here last week to transfer…” he was saying when I screamed and fell to the bed.

I started stuffing the bed sheet into my mouth as if it were food. I wanted to badly and urgently die.

My life-long investment worth millions of naira! Gone into the hands of another lawyer- just like that!

The bed sheet touched my throat and I stuffed it on and on, until it got stuck in there and I passed out!

Watch-Out for the next episode..

No matter how hard, just have the full trust and confidence in God. Saying NO to the Devil's proposal might be hard to comply with in the first instance but when it becomes a part of you through the help of the holy spirit, it becomes your daily habit. smiley
