I will say it over and over again....... Hyundai, Kia and the likes are very good cars. But they are not the best for Uber use. Whether brand new or not, it won't withstand the strength of Japanese and German cars. Just my 2cents....

I see all my cars as often as 3 times in a week and do detailed/thorough inspections. Servicing can come once in 3 months for a new car. Also, a car bought in 2013 is not new in 2016. It's at least 3 years old and that comes with the pressure of Uber. Drivers do up to 20 trips in a day so that means the car is used 20 times more so you can see the equivalent of private use compared to Uber use. I agree with Akanniade. As much as we love our Korean brands, they cannot be compared with Japanese products. A Toyota Corolla 2013 will almost always be better than a Hyundai Sonata/Ellantra 2015. When I want to buy a brand new car for Uber business and cannot afford a Toyota, I go for Nissan Sentra or Almeria which costs even less than a Hyundai or Corolla but is way stronger. Apart from the drivers, some cars cannot withstand the pressure. Plus the partner needs to inspect the cars as often as possible. 2 to 3 times a week is what I will recommend.
sehawale:

I see my cars when they are due for servicing. I personally monitor the servicing. I am responsible for the maintenance. I give target of 100k after uber. I pay 20% of earnings after uber too. By "wrecked", i mean the arms were all damaged. One noise came up from the arms after one is fixed. Changed shocks, bushing, even steering. Even after those, the drive was not smooth anymore. The car felt like old beetle when driving. I had to sell it off. It was practically working for 4days and spending 3 days with mechanic per week. I am talking of a 2013 model hyundai elantra that i bought brand new in 2013 and used it personally ( driven only occassionally cos i was not based in lagos) until i put on uber about 9months ago.

I agree. I did a survey of 64 drivers on the type of cars they want for hire purchase and none of them said he prefers newer models of Kia,
Hyundai over Toyota or Nissan.

Good day house, please I need to clarify lots of things here,
1. Does Uber accept Toyota Forerunner 2003 or I get a Toyota camry 2009?
2. How certain do I get returns on investment, especially with this fuel price hike?
3. Would it be advisable to do Part-time or Full-time or get a driver full-time?
Other questions would be forwarded soon. Thanks for your response

Uber does not accept any car older than 2009 so you need another car. You determine what you earn. While it is possible to earn N150,000, it is also possible to earn N40,000 per week. You own your own destiny. If you work hard, you can earn N100,000 after Uber with N30,000 fuel and N10,000 for toll/data/car wash and you can keep N10,000 for car maintenance/servicing/repairs. The balance N50,000 is yours if you drive yourself and the car is yours. If you maintain the car well and become more frugal, you will save some part of the N20,000 and earn more. The best is to drive the car yourself if you can. Full time of course. The second best is to get a driver to drive the car full time. Part time is off it.

Nice analysis. I also keep #10,000/wk aside as depriciation cost. This is assuming a #3.5mill tokubo toyota corolla or camry will fully depreciate in 7 years if used on uber every day. With this depreciation provision , i will be able to afford another car (assuming no inflation.lol) after total depreciation of the present one so my business can continue I also pay driver 20% after uber (#20,000 on 100,000 earning). So, my total OPEX could be as high as #80,000 (fuel, toll, data, carwash, maintenance, depreciation, driver salary). So, im left with only 20k a week.

Thanks for your contribution Sir. However, I think your provision for depreciation is too low. A 2009 Tokunbo car is 7 years old in 2016 and 13 years old after the 7 year period you provided for. My advice is between 2 to 3 years for depreciation and I believe it should be between N30,000 and N50,000 depending on the initial cost of the car. For drivers, I pay 15% to 25% depending on the driver's grade. My HPDs earn 25%.

is this preference due to perception or experience?

I cant agree less with you bro. I only chose that provision to deceive myself into believing that i'm making some profit at least. If i did 30k/wk depreciation provision, then im running at a loss. Lol...

500k/yr depreciation rate is consistent with nigeria insurance industry's standard though. Again, insurance companies dont factor in uber stress rara since that figure has remained thesame before and after uber came to lagos.

I might be giving u my last standing car (2011 toyota camry) to manage for 40k/wk if u still do that sir.

Good news is we have more drivers now on Uber so the old practice of drivers dictating terms is gone. I have a long waiting list of drivers. If you are not ready to work within my terms, sorry Sir. 'I wish you well ft Timi Dakolo' na your ring tune. If a driver drags his feet, I invoke some clauses in the contract and he either leaves on his own or changes immediately. You cannot succeed in the business by being lenient on drivers.

I need to give some tips and updates. I am getting loads of emails and as much as this is good, we need to ensure our expectations are sane and realistic. I have seen people here who claim they want to make N160,000 per car per week. This is not some money-doubler business. Let's keep our expectations as reasonable as possible to avoid frustrations. I have a threshold I keep all my drivers within. If any driver gets below the threshold, I place him on probation for 2 weeks and fire him if he does not improve. Drivers are the life and engine of the business.

I have a friend who has a 2011 Black Toyota Camry and is looking to get on Uber, how would he hop about it? Can anyone help? His car is clean title but with a mileage of over 150,000.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you.

with a mileage that high, the car will not qualify for Uber...

The limit is 62,000 miles or 100,000 km
Re: If You Are Uber Partner In Lagos, Please Share Your Experience Here by TokyoBulls(m): 6:45pm On Jun 09, 2016
You first need to seek and secure an exception on mileage. After that, the rest can be completed in 2 days

I am a very good driver with more than 10years driving experience and in all these years I have never had an accident while driving. I am also very very good when it comes to car maintenance as I can pet a car like its a new born baby.

I am based in Lagos and into hotel bookings and reservations but I will be very glad to become a personal driver for any uber partner.

One thing I can assure anyone who will want me to drive for him/her is that I am a very sincere and open minded person who will take your car as my own and will ensure that I treat it with lots of care and also make you reep the benefit of your investment.

If you will be happy to hire me please reach me through the number in my signature.
