Guys what do think of Uber's latest move on criteria for cars

"For a vehicle to be eligible for Uber in Nigeria, it must meet the following standards:

UberX Vehicles must be 2006 or newer while UberSELECT must be 2012 or newer
No mileage restriction"

I think Uber just screwed up their existing partners who have spent a lot of money to buy newer vehicles and now moved on to Uber select as people will generally use UBERX if at all. Now every one will have a vehicle on Uber making it very competitive and less rewarding. Existing partners how are you managing with the new criteria and competition? Your thoughts appreciated

Uber will fail in Nigeria with time. they are getting more desperate by the day.
i pulled my cars a couple of months back when i saw this disaster coming.
uber has failed their riders who now have to ride in older and unsafe cars.
they failed themselves for being so greedy trying to appeal everyone. i mean how do u justify riding in a brand new car for as little as N500 of which 25% goes to uber.
the MD needs to be fired for failing its partners.

Yea you are right..the company is definitely desperate to grow and control the market like they are doing in most developed countries. They have dropped the requirements to get in now, next is the price and aim to drive out local competition including Kabu Kabu and hope reset the market to their own terms and conditions later but they are forgetting that Nigerians always want the cheapest thing and they will loose their biggest selling point safety and comfort by allowing everybody to join Uber.

Also they have really screwed up their existing partners and messed up the image the company by this move as many people have borrowed to invest in Uber only to be thrown out in the cold. I wonder how you can recover 3.5M investment in a 2013 car on Uber Select faster than a guy with a 2006 that costs less than 1M on UberX. This will move will also discourage incoming investors like myself as you are not sure where the goal post could be moved to in 6 months time.

I hope someone at Uber is reading this and thinking seriously as they have basically copied the naija policy strategy that has killed a lot of businesses in the past.

uber is not desperate to control the market in Nigeria, they are actually desperate to stay in business in Nigeria. they have actually failed to keep their first pool on investors (partner). basically their cars are ruined and they r yet to recover 50% of their investment. so a lot of them actually sold their cars to break even.

until uber comes to terms that its service isnt for every tom dick and harry, it will continue to fail.

uber in Nigeria is luxury and should be for a targeted market.

Hmmm to each his own grin.Anyways this new regime has made my 2007 camry eligible for uber.So while some are pissed, some of us are happy and grinning ear to ear. Kept wondering why the Naija car requirements was so high when cars as old as 2003 are allowed on uber in most states in the US. uber here we come!

a 2013 corolla is struggling to handle the pressure of the job because of the slim profit margin to maintain it. lets see how long your 2007 camry lasts.

Pls is there any thing like hire purchase on dis uber platform, where a driver can own d car after a period of time? I believe dis system would help ease maintenance issues.

No there isn't!
It really depends on the partner but I can't see any partner agreeing to such terms! It wouldn't make sense! I

There is an option where you can get a brand new car to use and pay it off gradually directly from your uber proceeds but I think that option is only given to trusted drivers on the platform!

Morning house.

Am Uber partner driver, the uber business is not that profitable again since the high price in fuel and uber takes 25% from new partner, what would be your gain when you fueled your car with 25 to 30k every weeks and uber takes 25%. How much would you make when Uber are not ready to increase the fare.? It's not encourage to invest with Uber. Thanks

I agree. I did a survey of 64 drivers on the type of cars they want for hire purchase and none of them said he prefers newer models of Kia,
Hyundai over Toyota or Nissan.
Please I have a 2009 toyota corolla to put on uber would you accept and if yes what would be the terms?

You have not started driving but you are giving conditions to the partner who invested in the car. I do not consider any drivers for hire purchase until the person has driven on my platform for 6 months and even after that, the conditions are enormous. Otherwise, you can buy your own car.

Uber now open to everyone. grin

Well me I'm still into my cab Business and doing just fine without joining the uber platform.

I don't like them anyway. 25% commission is too much yet prices are pegged.

I remember a friend who took an Uber ride from Ikoyi to Ikotun for 4k. Customer was happy but I was sad when I heard. On top the 4k uber go collect commission again.

That's bad business.

Uber Nigeria has reviewed the requirements for cars eligible for their low-cost option, UberX. They’ve lowered them. Now, car models as old as 2006 are accepted. These vehicles include Toyota (Corolla, Camry), Nissan (Almera, Sunny), Honda (Accord), and Kia (Picanto, Rio) models. Previously, the oldest models that were accepted were 2009 cars.

Uber has also completely dropped mileage restrictions. This means vehicles will be accepted no matter what their mileage reads (that’s the distance the cars have covered). The previous mileage restriction was 100,000km.

These modifications are all part of Uber’s plan to get more drivers on the road. In March, they introduced Uber Marketplace, a platform for Uber drivers to connect with partners and get discounts and insurance on cars.

Over the past month, Uber has launched in more African cities; Accra, Kampala and Dar es Salaam. Regardless of the problems it may be facing in a few African cities, Uber doesn’t seem discouraged from expanding in Africa.

All well and good. The question is how does Uber intend to ensure the quality of the rides? Also, not to be a harbinger of doom but as the market becomes more saturated, it becomes less attractive for new partners to invest in.
I'll be starting off on a trial basis at the end of this month. If the net returns don't compensate well for the wear on my car, I'll leave it to the 2006 vehicles.

I can tell you now that it's no longer lucrative for the following reasons...

- uber now takes 25% cut from your fares (up from 20%)

- pump price still stuck at 145

- uber refusing to review prices

- New vehicle requirements mean a lot more cars on the road... So more competition amongst drivers and less fare for the partners

My driver is pretty easy going in relation to uber hustler driver standard and despite that, he still puts 1000km on the car per week.

So factor all this in and decide if it's worth it as a viable investment!

Plus the fact that MOST Uber drivers are semi-demons who will drive the car as if they never owned one and never plan to own one. I have sent many drivers away on the spot for the same reason of mishandling the car. They are involved in accidents and never report to you but keep driving the dented car all over for days. Immediately I see such drivers, I take possession of the car and collect my phone. There are too many bad drivers out there.

Some partners(car owners) on uber are not helping matters at all when it comes to partner/driver agreement. Will I call it greed or is it because they want to meet up with the loans they collected from the bank?

My people, isn't this outrageous: A partner makes a deal based on targets and not the number of riders you get.

**You are meant to deliver 50k weekly, irrespective of the number of riders you get.
**You meant to fuel it on your own, from your profit
**Recharge on your own, from your pocket
Finally, data services on your own. And then still deliver 50,000 weekly!!!

I think the business is good if you drive your own car.

For those looking for drivers; you don't need to give any partner your car. Become an uber partner and they will give you a driver
