Poor Power Supply: How To Generate Your Own Power from an Old UPS...!! by CharlesPhc: 12:02pm On Jun 20, 2016
This simple 'How To do it yourself article' explains an interesting topic, how to convert your computer UPS into home Inverter.

If you own a desktop computer, you may have a UPS that can power your computer for 10-15 minutes after power failure.

The purpose of the UPS is to save your work and shutdown your computer properly to avoid potential data loss and hardware loss such as Hard disk of your computer.

Most of us always underestimate the potential of the computer UPS that sits beside your computer. The average computer UPS can deliver around 600VA, which is enough to power your low power appliances such as fan, tube light, computer, television, etc.

If you own more powerful UPS such as 1KVA you can power your home appliances more.

So how much can my computer UPS provide? 600VA means the apparent power, but the real power is 60% of specified value. In other words it provides 60% of the VA rating.

For example:

If you have 600VA UPS then 600VA x 0.6 = 360W maximum output.

If you have a 1KVA UPS then 1000VA x 0.6 = 600W maximum output.

If my computer UPS can provide this much power, then why does computer UPS only power 10-15 min?

This is because most of the computer UPS is only powered by 12V 7AH battery which is sitting inside the UPS.

To increase its backup time we need to connect a higher AH battery. The purpose of this article is to make a cost effective home Inverter from a computer UPS.

It works perfectly and I and a few friends have been using this for the past three years and still running...!!!

Things you would need:
1. An old but working UPS (650VA or 1200VA) - Free from any computer shop or technician
2. A Deep Cycle Battery from 38AH (Keke Nape Battery N9,000) to 100AH (Truck Battery N20k)
3. A battery Charger N6,000
4. System Fan for cooling of Unit N200

Total N15,200 or N26,200

That is all you need...!!!

This simple unit can power home appliances like fans, light bulbs, Tv, Radio and Computer for a whole day. You can then turn on a gen set for only 5mins to recharge batteries and run for another whole day non stop.

This saves your daily fuel consumption and electricity bills

Modified

Meanwhile I have another DIY project where you can convert an old Computer Web Cam into a powerful CCTV around your home or office.

It gives you that extra eyes around your facilities, your home, especially those Nannies (taking care of your kids without them detecting you are watching what goes on when you are away), your pets (Animal farm, Fish farm etc) and your office, shop or store from the comfort of your PC and even remotely from the web.

It is also cost effective and with only about N40,000 you have 4 cameras working on your PC

Web Cam - N2500 X 4 = N10,000
USB to RJ45 Connector (using cat5 cables) N5000 X 4 = N20,000
One roll of Cat5 Cable N10,000
ISpy Connect Software on your PC = Freeware

Those are big batteries , you forgot to mention the rating of the UPS, vis avis the battery that it can charge.

i doubt that the computer UPS can effectively charge a car battery .

See those two Red and Black cables coming out of the UPS?

Open the UPS, disconnect the 7AH battery inside the UPS and extend the cables to the length where it meets the battery terminals

650VA or better still 1200VA if you intend to connect more appliances.

The Computer UPS alone may not charge the batteries to full capacity that was why I added an external battery charger

Connect the Battery Cables from UPS to Battery Terminals (Red to +ve and black to -ve).
Connect External Battery Charger to Battery Terminals same (Red to +ve and Black to -ve) When the battery charger is powered on, it would charge your battery.
Connect a Power extension socket from your UPS outlet (the back of your UPS) to your TV, Radio, Computer etc.

Or contact an electrician to locate your ceiling fan, power socket and bulb lines from your building distribution box and connect directly to the UPS

Ok, Why I called it a DIY (Do-it-yourself) project.
Discuss with any Inverter Technician in Lagos, they can assist with the physical setup and they know it works perfectly. That's my field of specialization. IT is what I do.

Best regards

What makes the UPS last longer is not the UPS itself but the battery connected to it. You can double the battery instead but be sure the batteries are of same rating i.e 12V 100Ah connected with 12V 100Ah. If you plan to connect more appliances to the UPS then use at least a 1200VA UPS. No need to double the UPS. Not that it won't work, but just that the two UPS's would be sharing thesame battery

Thanks for the compliments first of all....!!!

You are right. My neighbors use to think I had a 'Powerful Inverter' and always come to charge phones, Ipads and laptops until i told few of them the secret and even showed some doubting Thomas.

I had to install for them too

Those PHED guys use to also think my prepaid metre was either faulty or I did a bypass until I had to explain my secret.

Do you know this power set up thingy, you could put the setup together, put them in custom made box preferably fibre glass, then brand it and sell offcourse with your margin added. You could start from house to house before you know it the CHARLTECK POWER PACK will be a household name and you, a pot- bellied Billionaire.
