The National Female Students Association of Nigeria yesterday opposed the position of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over the sexual harassment Bill as presented by ASUU's National President, Mr Biodun Ogunyeun. ASUU stated that the sexual harassment Bill is discriminatory, selective, spiteful, impulsive, lacks logic and is targeted at educators. Speaking against ASUU's position, The President of National Female Students Association of Nigeria, Comrade Idongesit Micah said that the university communities form part of Nigeria and certainly fall within the legislative competence of the National Assembly. She further stated that the Bill is not discriminatory and that the National Assembly has the powers to make laws for different sectors and items listed in the Exclusive and Concurrent List for any part of Nigeria. She applauded the 8th Senate for being sufficiently sensitive to our core objectives of promoting whatever protects the female students in Nigeria. Going further, she noted that if the National Assembly decides to exercise its powers to make laws for a particular sector over which it has powers to make laws, such law cannot be said to be discriminatory because it applies only to the stakeholders in that sector. ASUU moved that University Miscellaneous Provision Act gives them power to formulate policies and bylaws to guide them and most institutions have structures to handle these incidences. The female body again opposed with the fact that, administrative panel set up by the university has not always been yielding results and cannot convict any alleged offender of any offence of sexual harassment because it is not a court of competent jurisdiction over criminal matters and that the opposition of ASUU to the Bill is not issue-based calling it 'an opposition for the sake of opposition'. Comrade Idongesit Micah however noted that it is quite disturbing to see that in a 7-page write up on a Bill co-sponsored by 57 Distinguished Senators, ASUU did not see any single section of the Bill to commend and there is no suggestion as to the way forward out of sexual harassment quagmire which ASUU acknowledges as a general problem, other than the selfish approach that the Bill should fail. Out of over thirty(30) memo's presented at the Public Hearing organized by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, only ASUU opposed the bill because the are afraid that the Bill if passed will expose many of its members. She thanked the Chairman of the Committee, Senator David Umaru for giving Nigerian Female Students the opportunity to air their position on the Bill while demanding that the Bill should be passed into law. Way forward. Why wont they be afraid. All they know how to do is victimize students yet nothing is done to curb their illicit acts. |

Never knew there was female students union in Universities.... #Iranu# Well the bill should be two-sided, if a lecturer succeeds in harassing a student to d point of sleeping with her, the lecturer should be SACKED while the student should be EXPELLED. Cos u can't upload a pix of u n a lecturer doing t n expect d man to b fired, na "touch-n-follow" him use carry u go d place? No b u waka come? N if u really want to show u r against t as a female, ull have to upload when he was asking u for t, n t must b a case of harassment, as I'm he must threaten to fail u in the upload...... Cos in some cases, students might b dating a lecturer or t could b sex for money (Okpara hostel ladies, UNN). So there should b guidelines. By d way, don't female lecturers harass? (Social Science faculty). |
