10 Reasons Why You Should NEVER Go For Postgraduate Studies - EDUREGARD by EduRegard: 11:03am On Jun 22, 2016
This is counter to a previous post on 10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD GO FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDIES.

It is very saddening to see some people still considering going for a postgraduate study as a merit at this present unsteady economy situation. Apart from those in professional fields like law, I can't see what you stand to gain in wasting two years in a postgraduate school. So as to make my points interesting, I hereby make ten undisputed reasons you should NEVER go for a post graduate study.

1. Your age might exceed the working age.
One of the reasons why you should not consider going for a post graduate degree is age. Here in Nigeria, the maximum age for joining the military is 27 years. Not only that, most employers do see age as one of the optimum for giving out jobs. Since we can't compare the strength of a man of 25 years to that of 40 years, it is glaring that those of younger ages are more considered during job requirements.

2. The types of available jobs.
I once heard about a young graduate seeking employment for the post of a political analyst in a well known radio station. He had both HND degree in Mass Communication and B.SC in Political Science. So as to increase his chances of employment, he put down the two certificates in his curriculum vitae. To his utmost surprise, his employer told him his qualifications outrank the available jobs but if he wouldn't mind, he could remove the B.sc degree from his qualifications and make use of the HND certificate. Looking well into this scenario, I wonder what a master degree holder would have done.

3. It delays marriage.
It is no longer news when adults advise young men and women on the importance of early marriage. The era whereby a man of 60 years still have two children in secondary school has gone. You going to post graduate school will only delay you from getting married at a young age.

4. It takes a very long time.
Firstly, the minimum number of years anyone can use as an undergraduate in Nigeria is four years. After this is another compulsory one year for service. Adding another two years to this will only worsen the matter. Spending over seven years in the university campus is just a waste of your hay time.

5. There is no longer respect for Degrees.
The days when graduates of university are seen as Lords are gone. Instead, they are rather consider as fools. You going far for master degree is just like the lord of the fools. You might want to know why people look down on these gentlemen, it is because they know there is no awaiting job for them. Majority will need to set up a petty business while some will have no option but to learn apprentice so as to make ends meet. In short, degree education is overrated.

6. It is not always easy.
Above average of undergraduates mostly find it difficult to graduate with a good grade. Majority made good their escape out of the undergraduate school. Imagine how hard this is, you thinking of going for a post graduate studies is just like someone who jump from frying pan to fire.

7. The cost of financing.
For every average Nigerian, sponsoring their children's education to university level forces them to live a miserable life. The song that they will pay it back one day even sour their hearts. It will be very unfortunate if after this long hardship, you still believe these innocent parents can still live more of their lives in agony just because you are after a Master degree.

8. It discourage creativity.
There are some things deposited in you that you can't find in school. People call it talents but I call it virtuous. If you can do yourself the good of putting them into use, they are more than capable of buying you a future. Spending another series of your years in post graduate school will kill these great potentials.

9. Your undergraduate degree is enough to make you a genuine.
Which field are you thinking of establishing on? What is wrong with the knowledge you have obtained doing your undergraduate? Have you made good use of them first? Probably you don't know, what you were taught during your undergraduate days is enough to make you a genius.

10. How you use your young age is important.
Considering that you are still young, this is the time to try, fail, and try again, to explore your options and discover work that you enjoy. Some of that energy would certainly serve you well in the energy-draining atmosphere of graduate school, but is that where you want to spend it? You really are only young once.

Do you really want to start down the graduate school track from which it can be so hard to remove yourself? It is quite advisable for you not to play luck on important things like this. Use your good time for something better.

Rubyventures:
You don't really have to go for postgraduate studies it depends on the individual. If you not going to use it for the future and you struggled to pay for your studies then it is not worth it. grin grin grin grin

In Nigerian our problem is that we depend on too much paper qualifications and neglect hands on approach. Is it not shameful that loads of Nigerian accounting graduates do not know simple basic excel skills. I would rather employ someone with basic educational qualification who has loads of experience. Than someone who is a certificate collector.
Taryur3:
Thousands of post graduates people still jobless...the few ones that swallowed thier prides opt to teach in private school and earning 30k...certificates doesn't lead to riches any more please. It only takes the grace of God to succeed.
kikio1992:
I am kinda seen as weird but I know I am right. Your M.A don't make you better in any way. It doesnt increase your job opportunities. And sooner than later its gonna become 'wash' like B.A is becoming.

What I expect is you developing yourself PROFESSIONALLY....and stop being stereotype.

you still having a miss on all points. Who PG epp? be the best in what you do. name lists of successful Nigerians and tell me who PG helped. you have the mind of a poor child in Africa. who told you PG makes one the best? Many professionals you see around already set a high standard before going for their PG's. Your best is in you. Many of those people you think are different from you are only paper different. They do not have what you have. My people, if you cannot afford a PG you can afford another PG(Personal Goal). Do not ever feel low because someone has a PG and you dont. In the field you may be more advantageous to you company and you may earn higher depending on how you prove yourself worthy. Back in days a n ex-colleague had 2 masters, but I was more efficient and knowledgeable in problem solving. that gave me a recognition. It takes you to succeed not your PG.
My message here is feel confident, feel you are the best and always push yourself to the top.

Op All your reasons are very irrelevant undecided Overall, statistics suggest that people with master's qualifications are more likely to find work than those with undergraduate degrees – and they're likely to earn a slightly higher wage. Most people do their masters when they're married since it's just 2 years, not 4-5 years, and they can do part-time, no big deal.

1-3 all bullshit reasons. The rest are okay reasons in my opinion. As a masters degree holder myself, the year i spent in school was just fun a year if you get what i mean. My advise is that your youthful days are the most important days of your life. Just like for every building, the period used in building the foundation is the most important period. Work on yourself and find yourself. Know what you want and focus on it. The earlier you find yourself the better. Look at the best footballers, the top 10% of them started from a very young age (6-12). Spending 1-2 years of your life doing masters with the hope for better job prospects is another form of procrastination. Unless you want to become a lecturer or a consultant. Just work on becoming very valuable to the economy. On the last note, focus on finding yourself and offer value. A year is enough for finding yourself talk less of two. Thank you.

op indeed your post is controversial.
Eventhough your post is correct to a certain aspect it would be difficult to convince a graduate
who is yet to secure a good employment 3 years after graduating.

Very soon we will see, "Why you should not be a regular Police Officer but a Traffic warden" or Don't write ICAN when you can pass ANAN.

When some of us find it difficult to do some things, we ascribe uselessness to it. I always tell whoever cared to listen, that a graduate driver will do better than an illiterate driver; ditto barber, beautician, etc. Why do we have educated engineers building and fixing bridges while the technicians are there working on their instructions and directives. In short I don't even know where to start to counter this post, I will just say, "each one to his own"

How will someone just sit down and say post graduate studies isn't profitable? What you are saying is that furthering our studies is not good!?
Yes, I agree that a person's qualification might beat the recommended requirements to work in an organisation but if both a masters holder and a Bsc holder are employed the same day with the same pay in an organisation, I can assure you that the masters holder will still progress in heirachy even when the Bsc can't take its holder further up.

It would have been better to say that enrolling for postgraduate studies is a matter of priority.
In this life, there are men that don't care if they get married at 50yrs, some might prefer it at a younger age, some don't even want it at all.

People have different goals that they want to achieve at different times on suitable priority levels

Those blaming op should leave him,
1. Countering the previous article means he is a good thinker.
2. Bloggers think differently, he is only writing for those that hate postgraduate.
3. The more you oppose him the more his write up flourish.

The mere fact that this post didnt get many likes or views show that most Nigerian youths have the graduate-and-get-a-good-job mindset. Sorry to burst your bubbles: that time don pass. Young people should learn to provide services and create their own wealth by thinking. Any PG you do that doesnt develop this, but you just do to get a better job is just a try-your-luck. Your first degree is a good launching pad to get a job, get capital, create wealth and attempt to retire by 40 years
