It was the last day in the blood thirsty academy. Yea, our passing out parade, presidential commissioning and pipping.
Five good years we've been here serving job, buying job, crossing obstacle, learning to shoot and above all learning to be gentlemen. Sorry I mean real men.

Anyway its the final day 5 bars finally turning to one star and like the proverb do say, a star on the shoulder is better than millions in the sky. More than 400 cadets started the journey 5 years ago now just 222 of us are passing out. Many have got wasted, many hv dashed (I guess they are not man enough), many hv been relegated and many hv been withdrawn. Still, we pulled thru.
We saw our parents smiling with head gears of different shape, we saw friends @ family happy and glad with many souvenirs in our name. Finally the D-day z here the dream of every cadet in the prestigious academy.
Anyway that passed on and we found our formations. Now let me take u a little closer to the academy and the people who joins it.
Basically, to my judgement there are four categories of people who joined the academy
1. The ones who sees the money: maybe their parents, relative or friends are in the military, this particular pple join bcoz of d uniform, money and majorly they see it as an easy way to overcome the current economy dillema facing the country.

2. The avengers: dz set join the academy coz they see the military as an avenue to deal with perceived enemies and to make ends meet with people who have wronged them in the past. U no wah I mean so no need to elaborate. Dz particular set are always active during plumming. Buh are always complaining during parade or fire alarm

3. The legal killers: dz ones am sure are possesed they see military as the only legal way to kill. They've forgotten even laws guide us. They don't do well in marksmanship or during PT but trust me as officers or personnel they are the first to open fire on civillians if a little disaggrement evolve

4.The perfect ones: every cadet claim to be in dz category, even me. We tell u we love the job our best saying z even if the military stops paying salary, some of us will still join. Anyway dz z quiet true. Many of us hv made sacrifice I mean great sacrifice to join. Back to the story dz just a mere divert.
For any reason we join, we are atlast officers. We were so glad all smiling and jumping dia were lots and lots of party in honour of us. We were on top of the world. Yet we never knew nature had a different plan ahead for us. A plan we could not dodge, afterall its our job we took the oath we signed for it.

As a second lieutinant I was posted to a place very far from my home state, a place none of my families knew z on the map. And as a young officer, I gird my loins, grapped my gears and got ready for anything that might come may.
I thought it would be kinda tough adapting but to my greatest surprise, it was way easy than my expectation. Things went so well and after few weeks of our POP th dangerous old ones among us started getting married. Among them was my bossom friend we were in the same battalion as clowns and we were like brothers even though I was a cadet seargeant and he had no appointment. Anyway, 2Lt Balogun got married and 2 weeks after 2lt Lawal, Uwezukwe, Oladosun and many others traded sex for marriage. I was among the sword party and that gave me oppourtunity to meet the military obssessed ladies. Not that I dnt have gfs I can promote to wife, but due to past experience and my parents marriage which never worked hmmm the sound of marriage brings phobia to me and I tell the ones doing it to accept my condolence.

Exactly five months after our Pop the insurgency in a certain part of the countrt got to the climax and many a officers and soldiers were posted to the land of boruno. Oh boruno, the blood thirsty land. The home where heroes were swallowed. The greatest nightmare of any soldier. Anyway, to cut the long epistle short, I was among (should I say the unfortunate) officers or lemme say soldiers who were dispatched to the blood thirsty land. Alongside my coursemate that had same fate like me were 2Lt(s) Olumide, Uwezukwe, Audu, balogin and many more.

We all met in the capital of boruno where we were all dispatched to diff town with the inhabitants of dz town mostly terrorist with little or no Friendly. Anyway, I was dispatched to a town of 32 heactares of land filled with pple and about 800 hectares of land lemme say majorly forest filled with insurgents. I know it was a death trap, and I know the inevitable might occur more early than I envisageg. Anyway, be it what come may I was ready to killand die for one thing we believe in most HONOUR and VALOUR. I kissed my mum amidst her tears and I promised her I would return, but the state I would, I don't know maybe dead.
I journeyed to my place of operation with no fear of the future, because of we had to fight for is the very minute. I got to my little detachment and I found I had only 2 superiors an elderly major and a very vibrant captain. A lot of responsibility lies on my shoulder and I stacked out on order from my superior. I spoke with most of the personnels present and a very young and intelligent 18 years old private caught my attention. Deep inside I said a prayer for him that he won't hesitate in the moment of truth so he won't become dead. All been said and done I briefed them on our mission and made them realise how we need to be in one accord FIGHT OR DIE I hammered at them. I told them we can't all go home alive, many will get wasted but one thing is sure, our legacy lives on. And I reminded them of the greatest script of valour (a soldier doesn't fight bacause he hates what's in front, a soldier fight coz he loves what he left behind)

We got armed trying to navigate our route in the thick forest and maybe get a clue about our enemies. We never knew that day had a bitter plan in stock for us

I went out with 40men we had barely walked for 20mins when grenade were thrown at us and another IED explode. We took cover and engaged our enemy in a repel attack. At that minute, my life flashed back to me. I am 24years old, hv never seen a real war.
Before we could open fire, the deed was already done. 5 men were already in pieces with scattered body parts, 6 were casualties struggling in between life and death. The corpsmen were attending 2 d injured while we the rest engaged them in a fire fight.
Oh the sounds of live rounds, oh the very sound of agony. All dz were songs to our ear, we had no choice we had to kill or die. We repelled their fire out of anger, we broke skulls with bullets and they broke ours too. After a 20mins that sounds like forever, of very heavy gun fire, the terrorrist were retreating and scappered for safety, we tried chasing after them but we couldn't because most of dz guys are very experienced they hv been fighting since we were 9 or 10. They are experience, they are hard, they will stop at nothing; it might even be one of their strategy and above all the reason, we were never prepared for dz. We never knew theur could be an early attack at that time.
Anyway, we've learned our lessons but in a very bitter way.
Now back to the casualties. The tottal number of dead was 15 and injured 5 on our side. Although, the figure wasmuch bigger on our enemies part. Death record was 46 but before we could get to the injured and do justice to the little breath in them, they hv either been killed by their own men or dragged away D reason was not clear to us. Anyway, I cried all the tears in my eyes that day when I reached the barracks not because my soldiers die but also because I knew what war really meant. I knew the weight of my job and that day had an impact in my life. Even till dz moment I haven't recovered from it.

Secondly, it was my first day out and I loosed 15 gallant men and I did not even die or got shot. It was something I could never forgive myself for.
Anyway, we boxed up the dead (the little ones we could merge there body together) and sent it in a truck home for there last respect and rounds of gun fire

It was 4 days after dz attack, more men were dispatched to our location making the total no of figures 282 soldiers (alive) and just 4 officers and a newly posted senior officer, with name Ltcol Abdu who is to take charge and become the commander of our detachment. The remaining officer include a major, captain, myself and my best friend 2Lt balogun.
We decided to divide our men into teams so we can know them better and off course to mount survelliance in our immediate environment. Due to my rank I was to command just 15 men in my unit. Anyway, the war continued and before we knew a year had passed since we traded been cadets to be officers. A letter came from the Dhq in d name of myself nd 2Lt Balogun.
Alas, we've been promoted to full LT

Phase 3: AN HERO CALLED ABBEY

More cadets did their POP and 3 second lieutinants (permit me to say 3 unfortunate ones) with names Abbey, Shakiru and Desmond. I picked interest in Abbey because we were in the same battalion in the academy and we stayed in the same state. Lemme tell u the little I know about Abbey.
Abbey is a boy from a very humble background, his dad died before he was born living him the only child. His mum gave her life and happiness for Abbey working borrowing and doing everything to give Abbey the best future. Abbey on the other hand never allowed z background to determine z future. He was competitve he did z best and even he made record as a cadet when passing out of the academy. Abbey has all the qualities of a leader all all the potential that makes an Army officer. In short Abbey had a great future ahead in the military. Enough about abbey. Anyway things went well with little or no attacj from insurgents.
On the 15th of november, we all woke up did some joggings and PT and it was during the course of this I interacted with Abbey and I found out it was his birthday even unknowingly to him. We sang birthday songs for him and things went a little well.
Around 15:00 hrs we started hearing sounds of live rounds, in subseconds we realised our location ahs been compromised. It was insurgents, they came in mass and harmed to the teeth.
They were shooting, Bombing, throwing grenades and happily killing us the federal troops. Anyway, we stacked out shooting at them and fighting the best we could. It was 45 mins of pure hell. Dead bodies everywhere and gallant men falling like bag of rice been thrown from a trailer. I gave order to my soldiers to find a great cover because I want no repraisal of what happened months back. I shot the best I could, I fired rounds upon rounds, I emptied and reload cattridges. That 45mins was hell, we were no longer fighting for our country at that time. All we were for was to live that day I realised the proverb (nobody wants to die but everyone want to go to heaven)

I can still hear the cry, the cry of agony, the cry of death, pains of a soldier, tears of a soldier, the sound of bullet piercing the soul the sound of hell. An unpleasant sound. We are soldiers, a brotherhood no one can understand. It was painful seeing my men dying but the most painful part is me seeing them dying and not been able to do a thing about it. We kept shooting, we kept fighting, we kept dying. We couldn't see the man next to us, all we could see is uniforms, Blood stained uniform and bodies and body parts everywhere. It was a day I can't hide from it was a day called a day.

Anway, after 45 mins of fierce fire exchange, the battle was over, we conqured the attackers, we killed scores and we dazed them properly. We also supervised all of them were really dead and the ones we had second thoughts about we gave more head shot. We saw blood, we were happy. at that point I kept imagining if it was the real me or another soul living inside my body. Anyway, at that moment I didn't care if it was me or not. I was alive, but I just want to kill the enemies and avenge my fallen brothers.

Anyway, things went fast and after killing the best we could I went to check the casualties. On our part it was the greatest figure I could ever imagine, we loosed 58 soldiers and 1 officer. When I was told an officer was among the dead, I couldn't hold my tears and anxiety to know who the officer was. And to my greatest shock IT WAS ABBEY. The birthday boy. Yes 2LT abbey Abayomi. It was a gruesome sight, such a very young officer with a bright future killed on is 24 birthday. Exactly 2 month he became an officer. How will the mum cope. All the mothers suffering over him for 23 years all in vain. Oh Lord if u are really there this z just not good

Abbeys death shook me so bad I cried hard and my resentment and anger towards the terrorist sect increased. All I wanted to do was kill, destroy and see blood of the terrorist. Atleast, If God likes He can forgive terrorist, but sending them to God is our responsibility.
Anyway, things went real and professionalism had to outsmart our emotions. We boxed up the dead and shipped them home and to the extremely wounded, they were also sent to a better MRS for medical care.

It came to a point in the jungle where been shot is an excuse or a way to avoid the impasse situation. Things went more worse with us killinh and dying, many a time we get dazed by insurgents and seldomly we daze them. Take names for ourselves and celebrate our victory with morale songs and night stories. Things went like this for a long period, and before we knew it, anothe year has gone by.
It was good two years without break, all we do is kill and be killed. A whole two years without me hearing from my family. They didn't know if I was alive or lying somewhere lifeless in the jungle, hopefully if such happens I will be eaten by pigs instead of serving as manure for some useless trees which might eventually serve as an hideout for insurgents.
Anyway, as the case maybe I was no longer the mummys boy I always was. We suffered so much in the jungle, food was Gold and good food was paradise to us. With all my 2 stars I had to eat mostly undone rice and drink like cows from dirty stream. No one cares about that, all we care about was survival.

December came and it was christmas, I called my troops together just to have a happy time of our own. We all shared childhood christmas memories and at that particular time all we imagined was the delicious foods we've left untouched in the past. Christmas to us was a feast where imagination was our food, the only christmas carol we got was the sound of gun shots, our christmas cloth was a dirty and tattered camouflage on us for over a week without us taking our bath.

Things were so tough over there, we were like the forgotten heros. The only thing we never lacked was ammunitions although it might be substandard yet we are making use of it. Life went on like that throughout the festive season, more men was tranferred to our unit to strengten our force. Myself and balogun were sent to a nearby detachment to ask for reinforcement of ammunitions, getting there we found out they were blessed with a telephone to communicate with the outside world.
After implementing our order we decided to make use of the heaven we could see. I pulled out my diary typed my mums line and dialled it, she was more than happy to hear her only son talk to her again. There was no really much time for chit chat since we must get back to our detachment that day.
Balogun called his family and he realised he had a year old son which he hasn't seen before. He felt nostalgic about it and wondered what kind of father he was.
A father who never asked about or know he had an existing son, and a husband who haven't spoken with his spouse in forever. Anyway, nature made us that we too wanna be the best dad in the world who won't miss our sons betday nightmares school games just name it.

I pacified my friend and convinced him he was the best and whatever happens his son would proudly say his dad was an hell of a hero. After all said and done we packed the ammunitions and the little intel we could get and stacked out to goback to our base.
We were few kilometers to our position when we had heavy gun fire and sounds of RPG and Grenade, immediately, we knew our position has been compromised so we hedged ahead to increase our pace back to our base before our men runs out of ammo.

Getting to the base, we found out casualty figure was so high on our side. Infact, we have been dazed properly we could not move for fear of been hit.
I reported to my commanding officer who was busy firing his rifle gallantly. And even in the middle of the chaos of heavy fire, he still issued me order to direct the troops while he falls back to plan how to forge ahead in other to make the fighting worthwhile.
Myself on the other hand took command of the troops before I could pull my cattridge and break some skull, I found out bullet just penetrated the man beside me a gallant corporal. Seeing gallant men fall was a gallow sight but not been able to do a thing about it is an hellish feeling. We were already dazed properly. Still, casualty figure was still reading on our side. One tradition have gotten accustomed to about the jungle was their have never been a better yesterday when it comes to us been dazed. Infact, when we thought we've seen the worst is when our impression are changed and we realise the worst z still to come.
Anyway, we were dazed properly although we shot some too but the scores was never even that day. We shot and shot name the gun AK 47 M14. We shot like robots at that moment, all we have in mind is to defend our own lives. The gun battle lasted more than 6 hours, and even after all the casualties we had we won't give up. I guess it was so too on the part of the rebels because they never stopped shooting. Alas the fight lasted on. It was unforgiven, gory, call it anything I was just hell away from hell.

After what looks like forever, the enemies fall a little back and we encroached forward more trying to make even score with them ( death reate)
If anyone told me I would survive that day, I would have tagged such a person a prophet of doom. Anyway the enemies fall back atlast after much Ado we killed the number we could and took prisoners from the ones we could capture alive.

The feeling our greatness enveloped us we were able to defend our territory that day against all odds we jubilated with morale songs and we experience what I call the climax of joy.
Although, we were caught unaware yet we still survived and conqured the best we could. Jubilation was over for me coz I have to check on the casualties.

Since more men were deployed to your unit making a total of 282 men I think a Lt. Col should be part of that deployment becos that number of men can form a battalion divided into 3 companies of 90 men cos a company is made up of bw 80-120 men with a major commanding one and assisted by a Captain. The Companies will be further divided into 3 platoons of of 30 men each commanded by a Lt. and assisted by a 2nd Lt. A 2nd Lt should command a squad/section of bw 8-15 men. So the 40 man recon team u led should be reduced to 15 to reflect military realities. It should be a military squad of 15.

I love military or covert intelligence stories. Its an interest. I love ur work. Please do the correction. A Major can never command a battalion, even if the COAS is high on Osogbo weeds. A Lt Col should be the highest officer in that formation with a proper battalion office with moderate staff of 12 set up. #Viva

#Viva
