What i realise is that some people just find it hard to stomach that PMB is ruling now, hatred, and more because of tribal sentiments wont just let them sit there brain down and listen to someone who is now telling us the true state our economy is in right now. Some people have shared all that are supposed to be used to stabilise the economy in their personal accounts.PMB did not put us in the present situation but he met it already bastardised.Do we expect him to do magic all of a sudden and turn things around? The only thing that can be done is to restrategise and rebuild this broken down economy. He is already doing that.Positive results will definitely come

The Naira was over-valued since oil became Nigeria's main stay and that discouraged diversification and industrialisation whilw promoting importation of everything due to cheap petrodollars

As it stands now, the smartest thing to reverse that trend is to further mark up the dollar to N400 and give tax paillaitives to companies, social buffers to Nigerians in terms of mass transport, housing schemes, food availability and quality education etc

In about 6 years Nigeria will find its self in a superb state
This is a good suggestion but do Nigerians want to wait for another 6years. Only 1year has gone people are shouting that there is suffering. What Willa they shout if the dollar is increased to N400?

I just bought rice for 100naira a cup with the same salary I used to buy it for 40naira so tell me how it's not my problem
[b]I'll try to explain.

For the Naira to be strong(er) we need to produce goods locally or deliver services that are utilised internationally.
One way of doing this is farming -which eliminates or at least substitutes for a foreign made alternative.

So as a salary earner, you are a noble citizen but if our services do not relate to import substitution or local manufacturing, I'm afraid, we have not helped the situation.

Government's role is to provide infrastructure, security, policies which would encourage local production.

The rule of Law has to be sacrosanct.

Our duty as citizens is to encourage government to abide by the rule of law by eliminating corruption and monopoly. Competition brings out the best in us.

In addition we need to start producing - farm produce, tools, fashion and other products which can quickly make us self sufficient in the shortest possible time whilst looking to export in the long run.

Agreed, not everyone can engage in these activities but the question I ask is if not me, then who?

We all knew that devaluation while you import everything is counter productive. Why the outrage?
Mr. Man. Nigeria's primary problem is not what she imports, but what she produces. The US is the biggest market for most things in the world from crude oil to pornography, but they produce almost everything as well and dominate a few like high tech and entertainment. Japan on the other hand is a huge producer but very poor importer of foreign goods so they have this unending economic problem, numerous recessions, stagnant for decades, China has overtàken. You can isolate your economy by being productive. That is why when recession looms in the US, they stimulate CONSUMPTION, not savings like Japan, because they know consumption will lead to production, jobs, etc. What government in Nigeria and most of you are saying is that since we cannot work we should not eat. Is this not madness. Yes, it is right in theory but the result is death from starvation. WHY NOT PUT PEOPLE TO WORK. But how will you do that when you insist on a system where jobs are not created but handed out, wealth is not created but shared by monthly allocation. What is the incentive to work when you know your salary comes through every month guaranteed.

Nigeria is not the only country with oil, with states, with a diverse population of dissimilar races and religions. Why don't we want to work. That is the answer. You can NEVER prosper without work and this country's structure can never put Nigerians to work. Stop blaming devaluation. The alternative is death and since 1984 (and before he was in power), Nigeria's economy has been dying. No successive governmental era has been better. Can't you people see it. Haba.

What devaluation is set to do is to force political decisions, decisions the owners of this country wish to avoid. It will force the lazy, lethargic man off his bed to his farm. Crude oil has failed. Instead of looking for a new rock to crawl under and hide, let Buhari restructure Nigeria now and put every part of this country to work.

That is the suffering a junkie will experience when his crack has been devalued to igbo. Hopefully he is on his way to recovery. Even Buhari is screaming. My oh my, that is not leadership. Cameron, Obama are not economists. But they listened, obeyed, implemented (and they paid in short term political capital) but theur countries are both better for it. Buhari should listen to sound reason. His fidgetting is sending discordant signals and this is not good.

Exactly,

The same thinking that the dullardd used when he thought that he could keep Nigeria in limbo 6 months and whenever he is ready for action everything will change instantly.

Buhari just passed a vote of no confidence on his economic advisers, who is the clueless one now

What's this fixation with low exchange rates? Is it so that you can buy iPhone for N10000?

Until importation is discouraged by devaluation, no fixed rate of dollar will stand over time...

Nigeria doesn't have an economy yet, if we don't deliberately fast now, we shall be forced to fast later by reality.

Now miss smartypants what is your solution cos your response didn't even suggest one
Reason is inflation for the common man. We import too many things and makes even things we don't import expensive. Market sellers have to hike price of garri to make more profit, in order to afford increased prices of telephone, TV, even imported fuel, fan, etc.

Sound financial/economic policies can help create more jobs and wealth. A buoyant economy naturally strengthens the currency. Or at least stabilises it because the markets and investors will have confidence in continued growth.

Nigerians are not asking to make 1 dollar = 1 Naira, it was an unnecessary APC campaign promise.

Most Nigerians being economically illiterate actually believed it. When it should be obvious that we have no economic base or much reliance on our oil by the West, to support it like we did in the distant past.

undecided I wish you'd have the BALLS to say this in a video.

which president or leader since the inception of Nigeria can boast of the Knowledge of economics?

Kindly refrain from being derogatory. all you've done is complain and pass insults... yet you have provided no solution. Makes me wonder if you have any knowledge of economics.

PMB may not be the most equipped to manage this country (he likely isn't) but thanks to democracy he is in. Best give him the support he needs and ensure he doesn't return again.

But Tam David West just told him that restructuring 9ja means break-up. If an SS person who should know the injustice of this current centralised system says that publicly, can you imagine what other influential people from other regions will be telling Buhari in private?

Even if we produce 8m barrels a day at $70 and the politicians use the money judiciously, 9ja will still be a country of poor people for a long time. Let alone under 4m b/d at $40 that is even embezzled.

Recurrent expenditure at all tiers of govt is way too much. Don't even get me started on ghost workers.

A restructured regional system with regional Premiers/Prime ministers will abolish all the legions of governors, commissioners, SSAs, SAs, department heads, agency heads, etc. Regional parliament instead of lots of State Assemblies.

Cities/LGs will get mayors/LG chairmen/women to administer municipal councils and districts, with councillors at ward level.

We can save much money that will go into capital projects, research, education/training, health, etc

cheesy Mr man, calm down before you get high bp. I agree with you, was just pointing out that devaluation alone in itself (just as you pointed out in your post) would not solve our problem.

We also need to be united towards progress. Times as hard as this is not the best time for a group of people to make their life ambition to bring oil production and export to zero. Its not the time to bring power generation to zero either.

I have always thought of this devaluation of a thing. I have always maintained that it will not help us. There are fundamental issues that are affecting the exchange rate. The fundamental issues continue to go against this country. Yet people who don't know anything keep calling the president names and pressure him to devalue Naira. The same people are still shouting bubu no Sabi.
So sorry

Rice production is a good start

Nigeria need to create a tourism industry to the standard of south africa and kenya. We should have the best game reseve in africa.

That would make them build world class hotels , world class transportation.

This western countires are always looking for somewhere to spend vacation.
Where do you plan to keep fulani herdsmen, kidnappers , armed robbers, poor infrastructure (light, water, roads ), corrupt law enforcement in this your grand plan? Nigeria is in need of SMART solutions now . SMART FO SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACHIEVABLE, RALISTIC AND TIMELY Solutions. Tourism is definitely not realistic- if anybody tell you to go to Afghanistan on holiday, will you go? We should focus on adding value to our raw produce and materials to make them intermediate production inputs. Even if we grow all the rice possible- unless we device a means to eat raw rice paddy- we will still be buying imported rice if we do not focus on processing.

@ cornelin

How will government encourage the local manufacturers if importation is still cheaper than local production owing to availability of cheap forex?
Oga leave that talk. How many companies have you seen that ran out of business due to the sole reason of naira devaluation?
I repeat, this companies always have ways to source for funds and in turn directly imposes the extra charges to the final consumers which is clearly evident in the rate of inflation of prices of goods.
