It's not possible, very impossible!! statistic stays Nigeria needs over 50,000MW of electricity to maintain a steady power supply. But currently the highest we have is around 4000MW..I remember when Jonathan wanted to make it 6,000mw but it was quite impossible....Let's say in the next 20 years, when youths like myself would have become leaders of this great nation..Maybe issues like unsteady power supply would a thing of the past.

The problem is the money... If we had the money we would build this power plants.. . Truth be told we need over 200,000mw as a country and that will cost over 250 billion dollars , how do we raise such money in this country...
How much do you think 1000mw of gas fire Power plant is? Go and make your research and compare them with how is spent on travels by the presidency. The money is not the problem.

With what we have been through as a country, the power sector alone have consumed more money than any other sector, but little or no result have been achieved. I was even hoping that this new FG administration will be different but so far it seems we are going back to 1830 when we had 0MW throughout Nigeria. I had tthis argument with someone on Palmchat but I would like to know what you NLs have to say. Do you think Nigeria can have steady power supply in the next say 10yrs.
It is possible but the way things are going, it shows that people of darkness are more than people of light. Light is not suppose to be our problem but some people derive happiness in it

NIGERIA IS THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WITH OUR RESOURCES AND INCOME THAT HAVE POWER ISSUES, MOST COUNTRIES IN AFRICA HAVE STEADY ELECTRICITY ITS A NORMAL THING, IT ONLY IN NIGERIA THAT ITS ROCKET SCIENCE, DUE TO THE CORRUPTION AND STUPIDITY OF THOSE IN POWER, THE OBVIOUS SOLUTION IS THAT, NEW POWER GENERATION PLANTS SHOULD BE BUILT, POWERED BY COAL, NUCLEAR AND RENEWABLE ENERGY LIKE WIND TURBINES AND SOLAR, SOUTH AFRICA GENERATE 30,000 MEGAWATTS OF ELECTRICITY FOR A COUNTRY OF 50 MILLION PEOPLE, USA GENERATES 120,000 MEGAWATTS MOSTLY FROM COAL, GERMANY GETS MOST OF THEIR POWER FROM RENEWABLE ENERGY, SO ELECTRICITY GENERATION ITS NO BIG DEAL, ITS ONLY THOSE IN POWER THAT MAKE IT SEEMS SO, IMAGINE A COUNTRY OF OVER 170 MILLION PEOPLE GENERATING A MEAGER 5000 WATS MAXIMUM AND YET WE EVEN FAIL TO MAINTAIN THE POWER PLANTS WITH MOST OF THEM FALLING INTO DISREPAIR AND NOW WE ARE CURRENTLY GENERATING 1000 MEGAWATS, WHEREAS MOST COUNTRIES IN AFRICA HAVE 24/7 ELECTRICITY!, IT IS SHAMEFULL.

Op, there is nothing impossible in Nigeria, if we want steady electricity by December 31, 2016. It's so possible. The people in authority know what to do.

Is it not the same Nigeria that tackled the highly dreaded Ebola virtually without foreign assistance? Nigeria has impressive records among comity of nations, it's just that our successive leaders have made everything look impossible.

How many times have you heard other Africans make waves in academics like Nigerians; scoring 5.0 abroad is now a regular thing. Sure you've heard of Prof Philip Emeagwali and other Nigerian scientists making waves. Don't you wonder why Nigeria dominates in the area of Literature and Entertainment?

All these examples are to tell you NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE in NIGERIA. It's only strong willed, transparent and responsible leadership that we need
.
You've said it all, sir grin

Re: Is Steady Electricity Possible In Nigeria? by jayblaze001(m): 8:45am On Jul 02, 2016
It can only be possible if our leaders are sincere, I've worked in one of our Generation stations and I'm currently working @ a transmission station. Since Buhari became president , we've had about 5 system collaps on the National Grid, electrical system operators will understand this beta . All our Generating stations are working below installed capacity and the worst of all safety is not there priority. If we must achieve steady power supply here we've got to switch over to HVDC system and also utilize the power of the Sun.

that right question should be can FREE power be given to nigerias 24hrs per day and the answer is yes.

with all the gas reserves we have in this country, all the coal all the sun.

even if we dont make it free at least we can make it very cheap. right now we are stuck on providing constant power.

A high-voltage, direct current (HVDC) electric power transmission system (also called a power super highway or an electrical super highway) uses direct current for the bulk transmission of electrical power, in contrast with the more common alternating current (AC) systems.....Wikipedia.

Changing our transmission system to HVDC will cost billions of dollars and could take more than 5 years to achieve nationwide.

What is HVDC?
High-voltage direct current (HVDC) is a technology developed by ABB more than 50 years ago to increase the efficiency of power transmission over long distances.
The background and technology
Power stations generate alternating current (AC) and most power lines carry AC that oscillates with 50 or 60 cycles per second, whether for the high, medium or low-voltage distribution grid. Power also reaches consumers in homes, industries and offices as AC.

Direct current doesn't oscillate, so less energy is lost during transmission using DC. The current is changed in a converter station and transmitted to the receiving point by an overhead line or cable. It is then restored to AC in another converter station and injected into the receiving AC network.

ABB completed the first HVDC link in 1954 and has supplied more than half of the world's HVDC projects. ABB in 1997 made the first installation of HVDC Light, a development of the technology that opened up new possibilities for improving the quality of supply in AC networks. HVDC Light uses underground or underwater cables as the transmission link.

HVDC and energy efficiency
HVDC is attractive because less electricity is lost in transmission than with conventional AC technology. It also requires fewer transmission lines, meaning that less land has to be cleared. Because special equipment is needed to convert electricity from alternating current to direct current, HVDC is cheaper only over long distances, typically more than 600 kilometers (373 miles) for overhead lines and more than 50 km for underwater cables.

In the example of a line with a bulk power transmission need of 6 gigawatts (GW), about 5 percent of the electricity will be lost over a distance of 1,500 kilometers when using an 800 kilovolt (kV) DC line. The losses climb to 6 percent with a 500 kV DC link and about 7 percent with conventional 800 kV AC lines.

Demand for long-distance transmission is increasing because of the rising energy needs of developing countries and efforts to tap more renewable sources of energy.

Whereas non-renewable energy sources like coal, oil and gas can be transported and used where the power is needed, hydro, wind, sun and wave energy can only be transported as electricity. In addition, the largest sources of renewable energy tend to be situated far from the urban and industrial centers where electricity is used.

A further advantage of HVDC is that it can be used to connect different alternating current networks and increase the efficiency of each. The technology allows the power flow to be controlled rapidly and accurately in terms of both the power level and the direction. It can compensate fluctuations in the power flow, making it the ideal technology for linking wind farms whose uneven production could otherwise disrupt the reliability of the network.

Firstly steady is different from uninterrupted. If we want steady power supply like 10 to 12 hours per day or even higher, we just need to maximize what we have now. If the issue of gas and vandals are tamed, we will definitely have steady power supply. Also some facilities belonging to the discos especially need to be upgraded. If there is sincerity,,, we can comfortably enjoy steady power supply within 2 months but if we want uninterrupted power supply then we may take years to achieve that because we need more power stations to up the maximum 5000 MW we achieved. The country needs Atleast 20,000MW to enjoy uninterrupted supply.
