Gov. Almakura Is An ''International Thief'', Workers Chant As NLC Goes On Strike by janzguy(op):
Workers in public service in Nasarawa State, Monday, 4 July, 2016, storm the Governor's Office, Lafia, and brought activities there to a halt, as they protested Governor Tanko Almakura's new salary policy which has reduced their salaries by 50 percent.

The workers who took to the streets demonstrating, carried leaves and placards bearing different inscriptions, were shouting: "Almakura, International Barawo" ( Meaning: Almakura is an International Thief). Also, the workers were led by some of the protesters riding on motor cyles.

One of the workers who spoke to MegaNews during the protest, but pleaded for anonymity for fear of victimization, said: "Workers in our state have not been paid salaries in the past two months. Despite this, Governor Almakura has just disclosed that the new salary policy will be 30 percent of what we use to collect as take home salaries in the past, and this is even when these salaries were being paid in percentages."

Another worker who also pleaded for anonymity revealed that for workers in tertiary institutions in the state, Almakura's government said it would be paying only 50 percent of thier salaries.

"The sad thing is that primary school teachers and local government workers in the state are being owed between 8-10 months salaries, and no one knows when these salaries would be paid to them," the worker lamented.

Monday's protest was organized by the organized labour in the state under the auspices of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

As at the time of filing this report, no Nasarawa State Government official was available to speak to MegaNews about the protest.

Sequel to the protest of yesterday the Nasarawa state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has today (5th July) declared a statewide industrial action over the unpaid salaries of civil servants in the state
