NFF shortlists Yusuf, Saintfiet, Le Guen for Super Eagles’ chief coach job

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has shortlisted three coaches for consideration for the post of Chief Coach of Super Eagles, and will name the successful one on Monday.

A statement by the NFF on Friday in Abuja listed the three coaches to include Super Eagles’ caretaker coach Salisu Yusuf. The rest two are former Ethiopia coach Tom Saintfiet, and Frenchman Paul Le Guen, who once coached Cameroon.

“On Friday at the Glass House, the NFF Technical and Development Committee pored over more than 20 applications before cutting the list to three.

“Among those who showed interest in coaching the Super Eagles are Giovanni Solinas, Saintfiet, Hey Antoine, Mark Wotte, Yusuf, Ernesto Paulo Calvinho, Dorian Marin, and Le Guen. “Others are Miodrag Jesic, Perry Hansen, Ove Pedersen, Adebayo Lateef Kola, Sylvanus Okpala and Peter Ijeh. “The rest are Vladimir Petrovic-Pizon, Lodewijk de Kruif, Kenichi Yatsuhashi, Bjorn Frank Peters and Ricki Herbert,’’ the statement disclosed.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Saintfiet, a 43-year-old Belgian, has coached the national teams of Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Yemen, Malawi and Togo. He has also worked with the Qatar national under-17 side, Young Africans FC of Tanzania and Free State Stars FC in South Africa.

Yusuf, 54, was capped by Nigeria at under-20 level and won FA Cup titles with El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri as a player. He coached top clubs Kano Pillars, El-Kanemi Warriors and Enyimba FC, and assisted Super Eagles’ chief coaches Samson Siasia and Stephen Keshi (who died last month). Yusuf was caretaker coach for two friendly matches, which the Eagles won against Mali and Luxembourg in Europe at the end of May.

Frenchman Le Guen, 52, played for Brest, Nantes and Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and won 17 caps for France, before coaching Rennes, Lyon, PSG (in France) and Glasgow Rangers (in Scotland). He led the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon to qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup finals and also coached Oman.

Speaking on the development, Chairman of NFF’s Technical and Development Committee, Chris Green, said the shortlist was on the basis of a set of criteria. “We set a criteria with which we evaluated the nearly two dozen applications and then agreed on the three persons that we shortlisted. “The Committee will now meet on July 18 to interview the shortlisted candidates and immediately name the next Super Eagles’ Head Coach,” he said.

peter rufia will be a good coach. try to save money.. because the others parties will use it as campaign reason.

he has long time experience. he has a master degree in i am not sure but likely coaching sport. won more cap than most

because you have not done well in the last 7 years. i will go with him. only his team did well for nigeria. after that nigeria never perform.

if you want to win. you go with peter rufia. i have 300% confident he will win games.

i personally want peter rufia to coach the team. we would win with peter rufia. he is the best goalkeeper nigeria ever had. he is of northern background who played for Stationery Stores F.C and played in europe, so he is not going to be bias against the north.

he captained nigeria to its first world cup and semi final or so. no other africa has perform that . not even cameroon

he only conceded 38 goals in 65 appearance for nigeria. stopping 24 penalty shoot out.

Not good enough. We rather stick with salisu if those two guys i have never heard of are the foreign candidates.

typical, always looking for the cheapest option. lots of unemployed high calibre foreign coahes out there that jump at the chance to manage nigeria considering the fact that we are about to usher in our next golden generation. The next super eagles appointment will be very crucial.

keep quite with due respect to late keshi and late amodu they re very gud coach buh they past a very easy way to the world cup we re in a very delecate group ryt now if algeria who is number one in africa can hire a foreign we that ve not even qualify for the past 2 edition of the nation cup stick to our own ok is salusi that is a local champion. Without technical dept or match reading ideas that want to go past cameroun and algeria I like u mr patrotic but I support nnf on this one cas if 2moro they gave the job to mr salusi and he mess up os still the same u that we rush to coment for the sack of pinnick so mr man u can convince 3sc chairman to appoint him and nt nigeria tks

Where is Frank Rijkaard? Can we find him and 'force' him to take the job? For the very biggest of jobs employers don't just sit and wait for CV's they go out there and headhunt their man! Come on NFF! You guys should already know this!!

In terms of profile, experience, style and of course his current situation I think Rijkaard is the ideal sort of manager Nigeria needs. Yea, he will likely be more expensive than the coaches shortlisted, but he'll be cheaper than he would have been only a few years ago AND he surely has the 'tools' with which to forge the successful team that Nigerians clamour for. Even Rijkaard's assistant in his Barcelona days, Henk Ten Cate would be cheap and an upgrade on the likes of Saintfaint and Yusuf.

If Egypt could hire Hector Cuper (a two time champions league finalist with VALENCIA!), Ghana could hire Avram Grant (Champions League finalist with Chelsea), Morocco swiftly jumped on Herve Renard (Winner of 2 of the last 3 AFCONs) then surely Nigeria can and should do better!

We are watching...

how can they do better?

when its obvious that we have mediocre running our football

The SUPER EAGLE ought to be a strong BRAND which they will sell abroad

1. one of africas strongest team
2. have internationally expose players
3. have arguably the best rising youth players in the world
check ths statistics from NACHO to IWOBI, OSIHMEN, etc

with this branding all they need do is market it to companies to INVEST in the super eagles

1.get the right philosophy and the right coach
2.pay the coach as at when due

look at the EURO 2016
all the stars are Africans yes
why did they do so well ORGANIZATION

from France to Portugal

yet we have great talent but very very poor organization that kills our game
cos they will always go for mediocre coach

will not be surprice

they will take LE GUEN and make YUSUF assistant
