mufutau55:Hajj, l understand where you are coming from. My Observations: I think one of the things we can do, for starters, is to insist on a "ground rule" that "third parties" should not INTERFERE, ADD FUEL/SUPPORT or show any form of ENCOURAGEMENT , when two people are having a spat. (I think it is impossible to completely avoid such spats, bearing in mind that we are all different individuals and decorum level will surely defer). I am of the opinion that it is the "third parties" that actually push for more blood! I know some do it intentionally because they want to, and see it as an opportunity to insult someone they have been nursing a grudge against, thus using the other person to do their "dirty work" Some are so borderline-evil that the fact that l engage in a decent conversation with Egun (we had a spat in the past ....but that is the past), makes them very uneasy and angry! Why should that be? Should we not all be interested in people who have disagreements, to "make-up" so that we can all enjoy the thread and benefit from its original purpose of "building learning"? Those are things that use to happen when we were in primary school now? Do you remember the song: Esu ta'posi, ki'wo leja, ki'emi le'woran ... Esu ta'posi! ![]() Thanks for your patience all this while. Lastpage! |

Good Bye thread... Reading you was good for most parts but recently its been a painful experience. With rofo-rofo online fights by adults that should know better, dearth of real property related discourse, threats of violence, physical assault and murder, firearms peddling, I've about had enough. I hope to see you in future if things do improve. |

lastpage:Very interesting topic but unfortunately I won't like to discuss it in details for personal reasons. I did that foundation design on my own volition and it end up backfiring cos the client felt much time was wasted on the groundworks as against the effectiveness of the design. What's more fun is the integration of the septic tank into the foundation. It's a pretty cool idea to have a floating raft and integrated septic tank system in a waterlogged terrain. To your question, a trial hole was dug to determine the soil properties and probable requirement. And we ended up using bentonite and polymer to stabilize the non-cohesive soil during the drilling. I'll sure setup another design pretty soon. ________ The much dreaded basement and floating raft foundation on my mind though. Hopefully I'll get it done in one of my DIY backyard project. |

Idea Exchange: Who's up for a concrete sink? I've seen the traditional ones (concrete slabs over countertops) and I felt it only require a little more effort to create something classy by spicing up the conventional approach. Is this a cool idea or just another wishful thinking?

mufutau55:Good one Hajj! Really good one!! I am of the belief that as "grown-ups" (and not so grown-ups at times ), we are bale to "self-regulate"..... if we make up our mind, to do so.In general, we know ourselves over here on this thread. Safe for new posters on this thread, majority of us have been on this thread for sometimes. What if we all agree, by stating it, that we will all accept this ground rule (dont stoke violence or encourage of sinisterly instigate by posing pushy questions along that line) .......... and when anyone does it or is attempting to do so, we call them to order in one voice, in a very friendly and respectful manner? We dont have to get into the original spat that the person is trying to stoke (that one is another issue we can completely avoid) but we can inform the "crying more than the bereaved" assistant, "Do you mind not to get involved or push them to carry on? (at least, if you cant advice them to calm down and take a chill, you can as well just do like OBJ: Siddon-look, with your mouth/fingers permanently at rest! Looking at the last one between( Egun and Agarawu) as an example, we saw peeps adding fuel to it, making snide remarks, even trying to add other people (saying Brabus sent me, saying some are sharing the money together, insinuating someone is the Approval officer involved, one even came from no-where and just started abusing another person who was not involved in the spat, awarding score to one person like 2-0, e.t.c ) These are all instigations to fuel the animosity further so that the two can expose, insult, abuse and ridicule themselves further, in th eopen. ofcourse, these same people are holding unto those abuses, keeping it for use against the person they pretend to be supporting, in the nearest future! ![]() I will expect that if you cant sue for peace....... be QUIET, at least. Moderator cant be everywhere as l dont think it is a full time job and even if it is, it will require a 24x7 attendance on the thread, not to mention the number of thread available for moderation. I think we all can be civil and respectful with ourselves, if we chose to do so. I understand that the anonymity we enjoy here (and l am guilty of that too!) and on the internet generally, gives us the laxity to be extremely aggressive and abusive, without recourse to the implication....... if per-chance, the face behind the keyboard is unmasked. We can do it Thank you Hajj. Lastpage! |

n3xt:I have to give it to you that you are innovative. Bentonite clay was a material that interested me in the past for possible use to complement anti settling additives and I researched about it. Sure enough, it's very effective in sealing ground water and stabilizing soil due to its extremely high swelling and water demand but the water must constantly be available otherwise it shrinks just as much when dry. However, using polymer binders constantly, I can't say about its effectiveness on soil stabilization bearing in mind heavy building would be on the ground. There are some soil stabilization methods that you may give a trial also. Since you can effectively introduce benton and a polymer into the soil, you can do soil injection with two separate chemicals that form insoluble gel and harden soil. The concrete densifier I produce is one on such chemical and I will briefly explain how it works. It's made of water glass solution, a form of soluble silicate. Bear in mind that Portland cement and clays are silicates also with cementing properties but in solid form. Reacting chemicals with calcium solution with it effectively turns it to cement ( calcium silicate) Now this is a not so common but regular industrial chemical. What I simply do is to ensure I get the proper silica ratio and stabilize it with some polymer forming and stabilizing materials to control the by product of its reaction. It's very reactive and it's different applications us based on its reactivity with by products that can give undesirable properties if not stabilized. So if you introduce this densifier into the soil and subsequently introduce calcium chloride solution also, they react within the soil to form concrete and the side benefit is that it combines chemically with sand (silica) fusing them together. |

gbadexy:If only we have good research labs in our schools, SiO3 or Sillicate is a very useful chemical compound. Nice one from my paint maker friend. I'm sure you'll also have a good use for it in outdoor paints. |
| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by gbadexy(m): 7:32am On Jul 14, 2016 |
n3xt:Not really. If used, it can be very durable but it takes time for it to react totally to be insoluble and one has to use special materials with tolerance for its alkalinity. It has a prospect of exterior use though and according to research, such paints last for a hundred years and are still intact because they are inorganic paint as against the organic paint we use that are subject to u.v degradation. Such silica ratios aren't available in nigeria. No capacity to produce it. |

| Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by gbadexy(m): 8:13am On Jul 14, 2016 |
n3xt:Very true. We also need research driven institutions. I read an article about a nigerian based abroad into designing power plants. He said most companies give universities grants and go their to obtain their research materials and implement it practically into a feasible product. Their industrialization and technological advancement work hand in hand with university research. Here in naija, our lecturers have access to such grants but are too lazy and greedy to do any reasonable research. We don't even value science based courses as we are a consumer nation. Those who study science courses find it hard to survive in the labour market compared to their counterparts that studied management science/ commercial courses. There is a potential for sciences to boost our small and medium enterprise through manufacture of simple everyday goods. Good thing we have people training on soap and insecticide production as empowerment. They train free at ojota chemical market. The opportunity is as such that you really don't need to do much but get a chemical, know it's properties and uses and supply it as a product directly. Examples are the hypo that is simply sodium hypochlorite diluted to certain percentage in water, the methylated spirit, iodine solution, hydrogen peroxide, glycerol etc. But even the lecturers that should mentor and challenge students are lazy. |

lastpage: ![]() These are the kind of ideas that pop in when you have less worries. But in reality, I think we should consider the alternative ways of doing most things. There are more options out there other than the conventional kitchen sink na. There's granite, cast iron, concrete sink, fibre sink and more. As for "efidence", I nor dey chateau, I'd have done these as a backyard DIY project. They're less than $100 ideas that can make a very big difference in most homes. Stainless still remains the best kitchen top material but no be those traditional stainless bowl we dey buy for Orile

mufutau55:Sir, On Nairaland, Lastpage! ....... is just Lastpage!! No better than the next person making a comment. If its God's will that we meet in real life one day, l hope l would've been a "General" ....in real life. Serving one's fatherland, in any capacity is a service to humanity and the more people make-up their mind to do so, the more our troubled nation would get better. With your level of diplomacy Sir, l am sure our country would have a lot of uses for you. Hmmm.... that your NPF contribution is on a long thing o! I am sure when you did it, the system was not computerised so the chances that they can recall your details is very minimal. Also, the level of corruption, change of fund-managers, looting of the fund itself, e.t.c has further reduced such chances to an even more dangerous level. If you wish Sir, do read about Kenny Martins and his management of the retirement funds. I wish you well Sir. Lastpage! |
