Advocates of Social Justice for All (ASJA), a Human Rights advocacy group, has commended the Code of Conduct Bureau (CBB) for its diligence and forthrightness in the manner it handled the Dubai property saga concerning the Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, ASJA national president, Torkuma Venatius said the timely intervention of the CCB put a quick end to any distraction that a prolonged tussle may have caused the COAS in his resolve to quickly finish the Boko Haram War.

He said his group just like other Nigerians had called for the COAS to step down, but said there were a lot of deliberate misinformation at the onset about the properties.

Venatius said, “a lot has been unearthed since the allegation against him first surfaced. In the course of investigation, we found out that there was deliberate mischief aimed at misleading the public through misinformation and distortion of facts pushed into the public space.

“We at Advocates of Social Justice for All (ASJA), on the strength of what we knew, had resolved to occupy major Nigerian cities in protest to demand that General Buratai quits as COAS to pave way for investigations into the allegations against him. Our reasoning was that the anti-corruption fight would receive a boost by so doing.

“In line with our internal practice of doing due diligence before embarking on public actions, we decided to review the information at our disposal. What we found was that there were yawning gaps and aspects that required clarifications. In the course of getting additional information to get a clearer picture we found that like many Nigerians we were on the verge of falling for coordinated misinformation that were presented as facts to the public.”

He said Nigerians that have taken the pains to ask questions and make enquiries are also finding out that things are not the way the dominant voices in this debate have painted them.

He said, “For instance, a Freedom of Information request by an Abuja-based lawyer, Ugochukwu Osuagwu, to the Code of Conduct Bureau (CBB) that was granted has basically closed the chapter on what has now been proven to be malicious claims against the COAS. The CCB confirmed that the General did actually declared the property in his Assets Declaration Form. Therefore, he has not erred and the fact that he declared the assets is partly an indication that he has no intention of hiding its ownership since only a public official that has nothing to hide would be bold to do so.”

According to Venatius this confirmation by the CBB came after the Presidency ordered another round of probe into military procurement. The list of those to be probed does not include General Buratai.

He commended the COAS for his courage and honesty declaring his assets without any pressure, stressing that it showed he had nothing to hide.

He said, “instead, we are now challenging public office holders to make truthful declaration of their assets like General Buratai did. For this purpose, we are asking that there should be a sort of six weeks amnesty for wrong assets declaration so that all eligible persons can collect fresh asset forms and declare their true worth like the General did.”

How much did the pay you?
And we keep running in circles.

A security operative with a calculated measured salary from day one, bought properties above his 100 years salary, and here you sycophants are, telling us it was a distraction of fight against Boko Haram.
These people from the North should know we have advanced past 1970s

If Buratai will go down, it won't be because of foreign assets duly declared, it will be for embezzlement of funds that might explain why he could afford foreign assets.

If no fund has been declared missing or misappropriated by him yet or any bribe or kickback received from contractors, then for now he has no case to answer since said property was even declared as owned by his wife, who no one has bothered to inform us if she was raised by a wealthy family or has a business of her own that can generate such income.

Verdict: Case dismissed!

The difference between justice as served by a constituted authority versus jungle justice of the street, is that the accuser gets to prove that a wrong has been committed, while the accused gets to defend himself.

A man had already disclosed legally that such ownership of foreign asset exist. The military hierarchy too has not declared any money of theirs missing. The military subordinates too have not declared any entitlements of theirs embezzled. No contractor has claimed to have been forced to pay kickback or bribe for jobs awarded.

The onus is on whoever brought an already legally disclosed ownership to public notice, to prove that such was acquired illegally by the General or his wife.

Public disaffection does not provide evidence for prosecution or secure a guilty verdict.

Yeah, I also don't remember the office of the NSA declaring their money was missing before Buhari descended Dasuki. If we want to move forward we better start telling each other the truth, otherwise we keep Rotating in the same shiiit.

The statement said the government, after investigating a recent media report over the acquisition of property in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) by General Buratai, discovered that he and his wives invested as "shareholders" like many other persons in the property mentioned in the publications and were not the sole owners.
If you know the properties being referred to, you would know that they are like quoted companies. You buy into them and get dividends as profit from your investments. You can also do your own private findings on this fact,” the PR-Nigeria statement said.
An intelligence officer involved in the investigation also confirmed that apart from declaring the assets as required by law.
It stated that: "the Dubai property is real estate investment tailored to operate on capital market principles of shares for dividends and profits as proceeds from investment rather than total ownership of the property

Yes the ONSA didn't declare money missing but the employer of the ONSA, the Presidency did. Money was also declared embezzled.

None of the above has happened in the case of Buratai.

All we have so far is that his CCB forms show that he had assets in Dubai. There's no revelation when a man has already made the declaration himself.

Obama was smart to allude to drug use as a young adult in his very first book, Dreams from my father. Bush Jnr also alluded to drug use as a college kid. No one could use it against them politically because it was already public knowledge. Imagine the scandal if such information had leaked out a month to elections? Same is the situation here with Buratai, unlike Saraki with hidden assets and futuristic asset declaration.

I understand that Buratai disclosed the assets as owned by his wife. So the questions to be asked should centre on if the wife could actually afford such assets in Dubai, since we are sure for now that the government is not looking for any missing money under Buratai's care in any past or present designation of his.

Buratai only recently became COAS. None of his past superiors have found him culpable of financial crime when he was a subordinate, except they were lousy at their jobs.
