China sells tank destroyers in Africa Djibouti recently paraded a WMA301 "Assaulter" tank destroyer. The WMA301 is a product of Norinco from China. The vehicle is known in a slightly differnt version in Chinese service as PTL-02 tank destroyer and is based on the chassis of the WZ551 6 x 6 APC. The vehicle is already in service in Chad and Cameroon. The WMA301 Assaulter seems to feature slightly different turret than the PTL-02. It is armed with a 105 mm (rifled) gun - probably an improved Chinese copy of the famous L7 tank gun - which is fitted with a multi-slot muzzle brake to reduce recoil - and a 12.7 mm machine gun on top of the turret. A total of sixty rounds of main gun ammunition are carried. It is understood from the author, that the armor of the WMA301 and the WZ551 provides protection against small arms fire only (i.e. 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm) and can be penetrated by heavy machine guns and pretty much all types of RPGs. Two groups of smoke grenade launchers - mounted in clusters of 2 x 2 increase the vehicle's survivability. The chassis of the WZ551, on which the WMA301 and the PTL-02 are based, seems to be a designed with features from the French VAB and the German Fuchs (at least it looks more closer to these two vehicles rather than the BTR series of APCs). 1st pic is a " Djiboutian Armed Forces (FAD) displayed a single Norinco WMA301 Assaulter tank destroyer during the country's independence day parade on 27 June. 2nd pic is a Senegalese NORINCO WMA301 Assaulter armoured fire-support vehicle during the military parade celebrating the independence day

11 killed in clashes between al-Shabaab, Somali army At least 11 people were killed in clashes between Somali troops backed by African Union forces and al-Shabaab militants in southern Somalia, local residents have told Anadolu Agency. The clashes took place on Sunday night when al-Shabaab militants attacked a village which was under the control of Somali government troops in the Bay region, Mahmoud Moussa, a village dignitary said. Eleven people, including civilians, were killed in the violence and many others were injured, Moussa added. During the clashes nearly half of the village's population fled their homes, said some residents, adding that most of the dead were al-Shabaab militants. The Somali army and the UN’s AMISOM forces repelled al-Shabaab fighters outside the village. Both sides used heavy weapons during the clash, local residents said. Meanwhile, African Union forces who will replace Ugandan troops in Somalia arrived at the country’s capital on Sunday, the Somali National News Agency reports. Last month Uganda announced that it would pull out its troops from Somalia. The East African country had the largest peacekeeping force in Somalia. |

Nigeria seeks South Africa’s cooperation to build military complex Nigeria is seeking the support of South Africa to build a national industrial military complex, even as both countries are working to prevent illegal defence transactions. Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Danladi Sheni, who revealed this yesterday at the opening of the Nigeria-South Africa Defence Industry Inaugural Seminar (NIGSA 2016), said enhanced military cooperation based on certain legal frameworks could be achieved after the seminar. Sheni said, “We are looking at the whole gamut of our military cooperation, at the end of it all Nigeria and SA will have a mutually beneficial defence relationship. We also want to see how the SA military establishment will assist us in establishing our own industrial military complex.” According to the top civil servant, besides the military equipment and training that Nigeria stands to benefit, the military industrial complex would create jobs, boost industrialization and on the overall would contribute to the economic enhancement of the country. Responding, South African Secretary for Defence Sam Gulube said the threats being faced today in Africa and the entire global community require decisive action and cooperation among nations, especially in defence, which is critical. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Army yesterday said it was carrying out a comprehensive forensic audit of all its formations, the operations in the Northeast and other parts of the country. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lt. General Yusuf Buratai, who made this known yesterday in Abuja when he received the principal partner of a law firm, St. Francis Xavier Solicitors in his office, said that the Army under his leadership would not tolerate any form of corruption as he has always emphasized the need for basic audit of army accounts. The Guardian recalls that the law firm led by Ugochukwu Osuagwu is the firm and lawyer that got the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to disclose the content of Buratai’s asset declaration form in the wake of the Dubai property saga. Buratai said, “The military police is presently carrying out a forensic audit of every formation in the Nigerian Army and in particular our operations in the North East. We are looking into the details of how funds are utilized in all our operations especially in the northeast in order to ensure that we justify what has been given to the Army.” In his remarks, Osuagwu said his quest for the truth about the Buratai’s Dubai property saga was borne out of his quest for the truth, saying the revelation from the CCB document on the property owned by the Army chief should end the controversy surrounding the matter. “Being here is part of my civic duty to contribute in resolving national apprehension; it is unnecessary controversy that just came up recently. When this issue came up I felt there was a need for the central body, which is the Code of Conduct Bureau to put an end to this matter,” the lawyer said. |

TROOPS NAB SUSPECTED BOKO HARAM TERRORISTS FUEL SUPPLIERS The Quick Reaction Force (QRF) of 251 Battalion, 7 Div Gar on routine checks arrested a truck loaded with 25 jerry cans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and other goods cleverly covered and concealed at Molai check point, outskirts of Maiduguri at about 8.00am today Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle, Muhammadu Adamu, claimed ignorance of the contents of the vehicle and called the owner of the goods, Tijjani Gambo to explain. He too denied supplying terrorists fuel and other items, rather he claimed to be a mere trader that supplies goods to customers in Damboa based on demand. However, preliminary investigation revealed that he has been sending PMS and other goods through the same route at regular intervals without an identifiable corresponding recipient in Damboa as alleged. Although investigations are still ongoing, it is suspected that it could be the means through which he had been supplying the terrorists with dire logistics in Sambisa forest. This is more so that there is a ban on the purchase and transportation of petrol in containers such as that within the theatre. Both suspects and the exhibits have been handed over to Joint Interrogation Centre for further investigations. In a related development, a dead body was dropped by an unknown persons and found by Civilian JTF at Ruwan Zafi MM Ali Filling station opposite NNPC Mega Station, along the Mafa-Dikwa road. The deceased whose named was given as Abba Aminu aged between 35-40, was married with 4 children. He was stabbed with a knife on his chest by his assailants. The matter was reported to Jere police Station for further investigation, while the body has been evacuated to University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital mortuary.

Malian military base targeted in southern Mali In an attack on a Malian military base in southern Mali, militants left at least 17 soldiers dead and wounded over 30 in an offensive claimed by two different groups. Many weapons and vehicles were also stolen during the assault. Yesterday, a coordinated attack was launched on the Malian military base in Nampala near the borders with Mauritania in southern Mali. The base was assaulted from multiple directions, according to Malian officials. Additionally, a secondary ambush targeted Malian troops trying to withdraw to the nearby town of Diabaly. The base briefly fell to the attackers, but was quickly regained by the Malian military. Responsibility for the attack has already been claimed by two different groups. The first group to declare their involvement was the National Alliance for the Protection of the Peul Identity and the Restoration of Justice (ANSIPRJ), which is an ethnic Fulani (also known as Peul) militia that formed just last month. The jihadist group Ansar Dine, which is part of al Qaeda’s international network, has also released a statement claiming its Katibat Macina was responsible for the assault. In its statement, Ansar Dine said its forces withdrew from the base after capturing several weapons and vehicles. The jihadists likely withdrew to the Wagadou Forest, which straddles the border region between Mali and Mauritania. The Wagadou Forest has been a historical stronghold and base of operations for al Qaeda in Mali. The forest was said to have been largely cleared of al Qaeda bases in 2011 when Malian and Mauritanian forces targeted the jihadist group there. However, Malian officials have noted increased activity in the forest by jihadists in recent years. In addition to the ANSIPRJ and Ansar Dine, Malian officials have stated that al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) also took part in the assault on the base. Reuters has reported that a Malian military spokesman said that “Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb attacked from the north, the Macina Liberation Front [another name for Katibat Macina] linked to Ansar Dine waited outside the town to ambush military reinforcements and an ethnic Peul group attacked from the southeast.” This level of cooperation has not been confirmed, but is a likely scenario given how coordinated the assault was. The current realities of ANSIPRJ, especially with how new the group is, makes coordination with larger, more capable forces more plausible. Ansar Dine’s Katibat Macina is an ethnic Fulani group, just like ANSIPRJ, which could also help in coordination. AQIM also claimed last year’s assault on the military base in Nampala, which killed seven troops, and is still known to operate near the borders with Mauritania. Al Qaeda’s involvement in the assault, if confirmed, means there has been at least 130 al Qaeda-linked attacks in Mali and the wider West Africa region in 2016. Since 2014, there has been over 270 al Qaeda-linked attacks in the region with most occurring in northern Mali. |

Our state of equipment and technology in the armed forces is poor, but it is still hundred times better than the state of the softer things which go such a long way to determine troop morale, things like care for the wounded, entitlements for the dead, supply of non-weapon items to troops on the field e.g. medicals, sanitary items etc. Sadly it is these things that make the difference between a developed military and an underdeveloped one, and no one seems to be seriously thinking of addressing these things. I once was carried in a taxi in PH by an ex sergeant who fought in Liberia and got a medal for gallantry, and he told me his harrowing experience after being shot in the leg and almost lost his leg. Ultimately it took the direct intervention of his CO who was aware of his uncommon bravery for him to be included among those evacuated to Egypt where his leg was saved. By the time he finished his story, this tough man had tears in his eyes. this was in early 2000s. This is almost 20 years later and sadly the stories are much the same. When will we learn ![]() bidexiii: |
