They don't even have the right to go through your phone without a warrant. Our police have been abusing their authority ever since

I have always read news of police brutality online but never fully understood what the victims went through until I had a first hand experience on Wednesday, 13th July, 2016.
On that very day, which has become a day I will never forget in my life, I was headed to jibowu to assist my sister get a bus back to the east after her visit to Lagos. Just before the park area, there was a police checkpoint and as I was walking towards the park with my sister, one of the police officers at the checkpoint signaled me to come. When I went to answer him, he demanded for my phone, I brought it out, he collected it and started scrolling through my contacts. The next thing I heard was "You are a criminal! Wetin foreign number dey do for your phone?……...". The contact in question is that of my school friend who just went to the UK for his masters program, but before I could say Jack, I have been pushed into their vehicle, a danfo bus with the registration number, XU754LND.
Each time I demanded to know what exactly my crime was, the response I got was something like "Keep Quiet! Shut Up! You are a thief! You are a criminal!…..."
My sister was not also spared of the harassment. At that point, I had to raise my voice attracting passerby's who also demanded to know when having a foreign contact has become a crime. Suddenly, their oga instructed them to move.
I don't know how the thoughts came to me but before they moved, I jumped out of the bus through the window. With the heightened tension and the increasing number of people gathering there, they just threw my phone at me and sped off.

The following day, a friend of mine suggested I make a report at a police station. I took the advice and went to Alagbon Police Statio, Ikoyi. Do you know what they told me there? That since they no longer have my phone, I shouldn't worry, that "It's a normal thing". The Nigerian police literally told me that harassment of innocent citizens is a normal thing. Who else do I report to?

My understanding is that there are dozens of similar cases that go unnoticed daily especially in Lagos. As it is, I think the only way police brutality may be put to a near end is by giving such cases as much publicity as possible. May be at some point in the future, someone in a position of authority may be touched to take genuine actions to put an end to it and not just pay lip service.

PLEASE BRO AND FELLOW NAIRALANDERS, THIS STORY NEEDS TO TO LIKED AND SHARED AS MANY TIMES AS POSSIBLE AND BRO DO YOU HAVE A TWITTER ACCOUNT? POST THIS STORY THERE RIGHT NOW, THIS SAME YOU JUST SAID IT HERE, LET'S BEGIN A HASHTAG AND MORE, IT'S ABOUT TIME WE START BEING THE CHANGE WE SEEK, PEOPLE STOP BLAMING AND COMENTING, IT'S WEAK AND USELESS, NIGERIANS COMPLAIN A WHOLE LOT.

A very sound economy and warm environment first before anything follows. So till then AVOID THE COPS.

Do you know how many black police kill in America every year, just of recent they have to shot 15 police officers 5 dead.

My brother, Nigeria Police is just a failed institute.....

I remember wwhen i was almost harrased by some police men back in 2010 in Lagos. I went to visit my parents in Lagos and my elder brother that just returned from offshore went with me to buy a car for his wife. Because of the time was late, he had a gentleman's agreement with the seller of the car and left for PH city while i went with the seller to the bank to make the payment cos the buyer wasn't comfortable with the payment to be made in his shop cos it was in USD. Very close to the bank (cele b/stop along oshodi-apapa expressway), some police guys jumped in front of my car and i barked at the constable. When ppl gathered about me, their most superior officer came to me (he was dressed in mufti) and asked me to identify myself. I showed him my driver's license. He then searched my cousin and the seller that were with me; even went as far as searching their phones. When they looked in my car and saw the money, they screamed that i'm a yahoo guy and tried bundling me into their car. I just showed them my office ID and my called my aunt that's a Navy Commander.... That was when they chilled and let me go...

I just hate police men..... angry

My brother, pondering over it now, am not sure I will have the courage to do that again. I think it was the bystanders that encouraged me to that otherwise I would have been extorted or even locked up at the station.

Brother i congratulate you but if i were you i will keep mute atleast no be station we dey go? Already i had witness of passerby that knew what transpires between us. I will let them demand everything possible b4 i sue Nigerian police force. We go see wo go win na.

And over 800,000 people still applied for 10,000 job opening in the Nigerian Police Force. Na wa for we country o

You will be shocked that none of those who applied did so because of passion-------it is basically because of unemployment. Some actually applied so that they can continue as criminals in uniform.

Next time endeavour to get the code number and if possible the name of the officer in operation so that you can make a detailed report and possibly approach the court if need be.

I think it's time spy cameras are used on these folks, if you want to enter trouble, have Kik on your phone, or use a Vpn on your phone, or mistakenly greet your friend on what's app '' how far G'' you'll explain the meaning of G, they go as far as carrying you to station, they have a cafe there, you'll login your Facebook, yahoo mail, Gmail and other stuff..

You'll chop mighty huge slaps if you mistakenly have white folks as Facebook friends, they'll check your spam and even trash folders..

Nigerian police, they should just drop out and apply to work with efcc

If you are with a pc, they can go as far as checking your browser history, all your documents, if you mistakenly visit sites like text now, haywire, scout, tagged, or Craigslist... Dead and gone... Your money na 100k. They don't want to hear explanation

Microsoft and Google should just employ our jobless police folks who intrude on people's privacy because social media is no longer social to them, you can only socialize with your naija folks

2. You carry Rick Ross for face. " D.P.O wan see u"

3. They sight you coming out from fastfood joint with babe. " D.P.O wan see u"

3. They see iPhone for ur hand. Aarrhhh! The first question u r asked na " You don register?" " D.P.O wan see u Now now now"

4. They see white man memes in your fone. " D.P.O wan see u"

5. You carry Afron punk hair with Dada for the top. " D.P.O wan see u"

6. You wear ear pierce walking by the road side or waiting to board keke and they see you. " D.P.O wan see u"

7. You carry laptop for bag (whether u be DJ or even pastor). Criminal offense " D.P.O wan see u"

8. You wear expensive wrists watch, leg, shirt or glasses (Police here in Warri current pass us for designers). " D.P.O wan see u"

Abeg I don tire to list. Any area in the house should tell the rest. Warri Police! God forbid!
