EDITORIAL: The Time For Online Media In Political Parties Is Now by OGreat20(op): 6:52pm On Jul 21, 2016
Recently, a coalition of committed and patriotic Social Media Influencers across all platforms whose loyalty are tied to the ideals of PDP, group of advocates and promoters of young people inclusion in running of affairs at all levels of the PDP came together to form the People’s Democratic Party Online Support Group(PDP-OSG)

The PDP Youths have realized the importance of New Media in this age and took upon themselves to use their skills and scarce resources to promote, defend and uphold the ideals, positions, and decisions of the party at all levels, including soliciting for votes and campaigning for party candidares in the interest of the party.

The youths have been playing major role even before internet became popular, writing articles to online media platforms, engaging in debate on various online platforms including blogs, social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, Online Forums as well as videos on youtube, and Broadcasts on Whatsapp and Blackberry Messenger which has gone far in helping the PDP’s victories in Rivers, Benue and Abia State re-elections respectively.

It is on record that immediately after the PDP lost the 2015 Presidential poll, several chieftains of the party went verbally underground, abandoning the patriotic opposition role to the ruling party, the APC. It was the PDP Online wing that stood firm during that period to ensure that the ruling party is put to check, and their propaganda does not go unchecked.

Despite the fact that the Online PDP Support Group is doing a lot for the party, the party leadership at all levels have either ignored, neglected and take them for granted; they were neither carried along in decision making nor considered or consulted whenever committee appointments in the party at all level is made.

It will be in the best interest of the Party leadership to note that the PDP Online Support Group is an important arm of the party, that houses all party faithfuls that promotes, defend, support and uphold the ideals and positions of the party on various online platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Youtube, as well as Online Opinion Writers and personslities whose loyalty is tied to the party.

Finally, the party leadership need to:

1. Recognize and acknowledge the efforts and contributions of the Online Media aimed at its growth;

2. Set up urgently, an Online Media Directorate at the National level of the party to be head by a Director, who must be from within the PDP Online Support Group Constituency.

3. The six zonal and 37 states levels of the party must equally have Online Media Directorate and head by a Director for each zonal and state chapters.

4. Finally, reasonable percentage of all Party’s Committee Appointments, and adhoc appointments should be reserved for the Online Support Group with consultation with the Online Support Group through the representatives of the group.
This should be captured in the PDP Convention Committee list as well as the party’s campaign council for Ondo Governorship election.

Just to add a little pep to this cheering news even Obama commended Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook for a job well done in his Presidential campaign of 2008. What many failed to understand is that the influence wield by online campaign is superior to many campaign outlets. Kudos
