emamos:
A recent assessment by the Computer Warehouse Group (CWG) Plc has revealed that a higher percentage of Nigerians use the ‘Automated Teller Machines’ (ATMs) compared to their counterparts in Ghana and the United Kingdom (UK).

Apart from population and cashless factors, these apply:

It is not necessarily a desirable condition. It may boil down to value and stability of the Naira. If you see an item that sells for N1,000; by the way you have visited and withdrawn from ATM to pay for it, its price has gone up to N1,300, and you would be required to visit the ATM once more, and so forth. With low value of the Naira, you may have to be visiting the ATM more often to withdraw to match rising costs. If a British withdraws, say, 10 Pounds, it may last him some time before he has to withdraw again.

True that we use ATM machines than the UK but its not a positive survey for us but a negative one. Like most people have said the UK run a cashless economy, most top shops and off- licence shops, taverns and pubs around the streets all use POS machine. People also do online banking transactions because internet is cheap and you get BT wifi zones in some parts of the city so there is really no need to spend cash unlike nigeria we still do local buka, Local pepper seller etc If you get to their ATM machines you hardly see anyone using it before you and if you must wait you probably waiting for one or two persons unlike Nigeria, all the ATM machines is full of people struggling to cash money. Even the naira value and inflation makes us to withdraw often. To live comfortably in a day in Nigeria of today you will spend nothing less than 10k everyday so why wont we withdraw money like our lives depend on it.

Simple logic.

We buy things with cash, 95% of their transaction na with card. So why dem need ATM if not for emergency

Nigeria should look into adopting Kenya's mobile money model. Only with a simple basic phone and a sim card one is connected to the financial world.....through it one can directly receive transfers such as Moneygram, Western union, Skrill, World remit, Sendwave etc. Withdraw and deposit money into one's bank account. Transfer money to another phone number and the owner cash the money from agents around him.

One can make payment in a store by just sending the amount from their mobile wallet to the store's code at no extra charge to the customer.

Nigeria should wake up.

Sir please can I possibly receive money from South Africa to Nigeria via World Remit? Do you know how it works?

From their link https://www.worldremit.com/en/nigeria it shows one can only send airtime from South Africa to Nigeria via World Remit. I suggest you receive via a domiciliary account or SKrill as you can always sell the foreign currency in your Skrill account to many who need it in Nigeria. I hope this helps.

It can't just be down to population size.If Nigeria was a cashless society then masses would use ATMs less.

Is because banks in Nigeria forced their customers to have ATM as a means of generating money for themselves........

If one wants to deposit $100 Paypal fund into the account, what are the charges, the duration it will take to reflect in the account and how much will l get to withdraw from the agent?

I switched to Sendwave and Skrill because of Paypal charges.

Nigerian cash machines are even better than the ones in the UK in terms of functionality.

There is nothing like believing. Its a fact. I use cash machines everyday in the UK. I have used Nigerian cash machines as well. UK cash machines just dispense cash, allow balance checking and PIN reset. Naija cash machines have better functionality.

I think the key word here is "functionality" He must have misinterpreted the word.

Uk cash machines also allow you to pay in cash and cheques. I use Nationwide and Halifax.

They are not in every branch of Nationwide and Halifax and certainly not in every UK bank. They are mainly mono-functional kiosks and not multi. You have some for coins as well.

All these still can't compete with an average naija ATM in terms of functionality
