Do you think a married family with children is any better than an unmarried relationship with kids, if so why?

For me I'd say Nope, a family is a family as long as theres heaps of love and communication.

Both of them are called FAMILY no doubt about it. but the keyword is Married/Marriage . As such, i think the significance of Marriage in human life is what to ask for, & also, what to know about. That will give an idea of where the kids fits in.

Take two identical "families", with the only difference being the marital status of the couples, then they are - on the face of it anyway - pretty much analogous. And if all things remain pretty much equal, outcomes on the whole shouldn't be too much different.

But even here you find seemingly insignificant things that could take on greater meaning and impact. Take for example names, lots of co-habiting couples choose marriage when children arrive, simply because it gives a greater sense of wholeness and unity, especially with the same surname.

Then there is also the perceived level of commitment. It is likely more relative as opposed to absolute,in couples who take that step of formalising their commitment via marriage - knowing what marriage means.

Perhaps more persuasively, the data clearly shows that even between the similar types I used by way of example, long-term, the unmarried couples are much more likely to split up. No gainsaying.

Marriage pays a domestic dividend that no other arrangement can match, from actual consideration of ones partner, to the commitment of the couple, the degree of involvement of their respective families, likelihood of separation, and to perhaps the most important, long-term well-being of the children. Looking like marriage, acting like marriage, or de facto marriage is simply not marriage.
