Nice one.
Petrus will soon be offered a full scholarship to go study science in a foreign school and they would make sure he gets a good job before he graduates.

Petrus will meet a 'nice' girl, get married and start having children over there.
He will get all the funding he needs for his research and more.

Petrus may never come to Africa again.
He will be offered citizenship easily.

The sad tale of many African geniuses.
Actually, there's a clandestine western Policy Against African Development. In the US the code name is the NEXXT scholar initiative which is used to trap intelligent science students from third world countries. Europe have it as well.

See http://www.africason.com/2014/09/a-clandestine-us-policy-against-african.html?m=1

White kids aren't more intelligent than Africa kids. If our dumb governments could wake up and re-invent education in Africa to learn on our own terms, the sky would be our limit.

I'm tired of people quoting me. i want to interact with engineering minds.

Who told you he can call existing GSM phone numbers with it? Bro he can't.

If you understand the intricate process and protocols involved in initiating a call, you will know it's impossible, and not even with the sim-less phone he created.

The phone he created is sim-less, and just like a walkie-talkie, it's incompatible with GSM protocols
It can't initiate a call with a GSM device.

I'm still surprised at some of the comments i have been reading regarding this guy's creation ever since it reached FP.

what he created is a walkie-talkie, (even though this one is bulky) and it's mostly used in the military and paramilitary.

It's not an invention, that is how olden days telecommunications systems work until they decided to commercialize it, and made it more advance as we have today.

It's only in the military and paramilitary that we can still find it today. They have a short range of communication and limited channels.

Even as it is, he can only use it within his domain because there are stringent laws binding radio frequency allocation/usage, due to interference issues. He will need a license to operate it in a public domain.

And I can see him having issues with already existing telecommunication companies if he decides to go into mass production and commercialize it.

Although, I appreciate his creative mind he deserves to be commended and encouraged.
you are right but the fact that he could develop it at a young age he needs to be commended

Bro! No be quarrel! Na question I ask o!
When this story first hit the FP. Many folks where saying he just remade a walkie talkie.
Even in this thread may peeps including you are saying same. Am not saying u are wrong nor right, dnt get me wrong. Its just that the lad has not said if he can make or receive calls from gsm numbers with it. Untill then I wont call it a walkie talkie yet.

Now to the engineering mind talk, do u know the technology behind CDMA network?

Of course. He is oblivious to this. He will surely enjoy his new and civilised life l. But his ingenuity will have been more beneficial to a third world which is home to his family, relatives, community, friends, etc.

You may argue that he may never get to reach his potential if he remains here which is his home; thus the 'sad' tale.

ebosie11:
A Grade 12 learner in Namibia’s Ohagwena Region has invented a sim-less mobile phone that allows users to make free calls and watch one TV channel.

Simon Petrus, a pupil at Abraham Iyambo Senior Secondary School, created the phone using spares from a phone and television set.

Complete with a light bulb, fan and charger socket, the handset functions off power supplied through a radiator and is able to make calls to anywhere through the use of radio frequencies.

The invention, which is made up of a radio system, is attached to a box and also allows the user to view one TV channel on it.

He is also able to watch NBC1 TV on his box.

No stranger to the world of creation, Petrus is reported to have won a gold medal at national level last year for his invention of a two-in-one machine that works as both a seed drier and cooler.

The shy learner has admitted to working on his invention for two years through money provided by his unemployed parents.

Petrus claims that he invented the phone in the hopes that it would be successful and be able to be carried further.

I have modified my earlier response and I stated the reasons why it's not possible, I wonder why you didn't quote the one I modified.

what he created is what we can also call a transceiver. and it can be half or full duplex. the technology behind full duplex is more complex and makes use of two channels and frequency.

although more details are not given in other to ascertain whether he utilized half or full duplex but in either case, all you need to connect is to tune to that particular frequency(if you know it and you are in range) and you can communicate. both devices are acting as TX and RX.

But in the case of GSM, there are certain protocols and intricate proceses that takes place during call initiation that are not compatible with the simple process i narrated above. Even the billing system is part of those protocols.

He can only communicate with other transceivers that he has created. He can't break the protocols of GSM with his own phone, and moreover he his not operating at the frequency range of GSM.

WHAT THE FVCK IS THAT SHÌT...you call it a "phone"?

If it operates on radio frequency then it's a walkie talkie and a scrappy one at that.

Welp...I hope he gets a scholarship to the US and meet a nice gorgeous girl and never steps foot on the hellhole called Africa.
Walkie talkie is an half duplex device, if he says it's a phone that mean it works on full duplex and the frequency is synchronized at both ends of communication.

Fine! but still dont write the boy's invention off yet.

You know why I asked about d cdma technology? Cdma network its in d same range of radio frequency transmission. Infact its cdma technology (radio frequency) that US army uses in field during battle. This tech has been integrated to the gsm protocols, hereby making it possible to call gsm numbers.

If u noticed when cdma network came on board their phones were simless and now they have cdma sim cards (meaning upgrade/improvement have been done on its integration into the gsm network)

CDMA technology is a very complex subject to delve into. I don't think what he did involves Code Division Multiple Access technique. It's too advance for his level.

Welcome to the real world!

There is a saying in the venture capital industry "Shoot the inventor"

The inventor only knows how to invent but knows nothing about commercialising his invention

Many widgets invented in Europe are best commercialized in America for instance because they have a massive venture capital industry that loves to take risk. It also has lots of companies that may need it.

Inventing is 10% of the work. Commercialising it is 90%.
