My dear, do not just mention China, they sent their best and brightest all around the world and when they had spent about a decade, they came back home. It took over 2 decades of closed boarder with this imported knowledge for them to become what they are. So has 'PMB' (sic) done any of such? The sooner Nigerians understand true governance the better.
first of all, we dont need to send our best and brightest abroad to learn anything. we already have them in abundance all over the world doing great things. all is to encourage them to come back home and contribute their quotas and PMB‘s overseas travel has aided that to an extent.
Secondly, transfer of knowledge is much more easier now with the power of ICT than it was a decade ago, so we surely dont need to waste time and resources going exactly the Chinese route.
lastly, do you know as long as Nigeria keeps importing generators, our power output will likely remain low? cos those generator manufacturer and the importers are among the major saboteurs of our power sector. they see improvements in supply of power as a hindrance to their business.

Mr man abeg keep kwayet. Look at nigerians GDP, its technically in recession. U know why? Because the so called manufacturers are finding it hard to cope. Forex increase, high loan rates, high duty rate is killing them.
Even the phone you used to type this rubbish, is it made in nigeria? Look around yur room where you lay to spit this gibberish. Point out ten things in your room that is made in Nigeria. You people just harp on export export like its A B C.
How many things do we export, Mr man take your time there o! A country that can't produce pencil. No vex me this afternun.
You're free to sit down in your poverty, scream and curse Buhari, complain about the economy while you gnash your teeth and pour ashes on your head.

I just made contacts with suppliers of what I need......don't have time for people without vision.

The disadvantages of import:
1.Foreign goods are substituting the domestic goods' markets,so the domestic industries (Innoson & Co) are eliminated.
2.Trade deficit will cause the currency devaluation, inflation (Nigeria's Current Problem).
3.The importing of important industries will lose the influence by importing country.

If you still don't understand that the increment is a deliberate measure to discourage importation,
then you know nothing, I repeat, nothing.

***Culled from ECO 101***
Your theory is okay but how realistic is it.

If a country wants to decrease importation of processed goods so as to improve local production, then it should support production of such goods in the country:
1. By providing electricity 24/7.
2. By providing grants for innovation.
3. By enabling opportunities for certified international manufacturers to operate their facilities in the country.
None has been done by the present regime.

Does Nigeria produce:
Car components in Nigeria?
LCD TV?
LCD TV screens?
NO!

Most of these importers import goods that we don't have the facility to produce. This is just a deliberate attempt by the government to milk the citizens and frustrate the business of importers.

On a personal note, I am working on introducing an electronic product in Nigeria, I have designed and constructed it, but most components were imported. Consequently, my product will suffer from this duty hike and patronage from potential customers will be low because I would like to cover my cost of production and make profit as well.

Basic economics theory will surely fail.

Of all the people to use as an example, you choose dangote?
A man who's connected to his eyeballs? Whose entire family and community is made up of the cream of northern society?!
You think exporting mere firewood- not timber o!- is a joke?
Who will loan you money to acquire commercial quantities of your target item- at what interest rate? Where will you store, how will you transport, how much insurance will you pay?
All of this of course, with the assumption that you had a firm supply contract in the first place.
Even the european ban on our beans was extended. Or you think our local manufacturers don't know that there's an export market?
The same govt that can't process crude has the audacity to tell us to export finished goods? Or you're not aware that crude products cost over 90% of our import bill WHICH IS WHY THERE,S NO FOREX FOR OTHER ESSENTIAL IMPORTS? Or you think you'll survive if we stop the importation of wheat, salt, sugar and petrol?
Better take your childish logic to your fellow children.
Diablo666:
Please where did you get your statistics from that most of the factories have shut down? cos from what I am seeing, more industries are being built daily most especially in the agro-allied sector. From the production of the crops to the manufacturing of the needed machines. I have seen physically the made in benue tractors. The only masterstroke left is for the government to find a lasting solution to the power deficiency.
Have you read the dangote's story. making of Africa's richest man? in his words “I was into importation, until I realised that I would make much more profit locally producing same things I import“. And thats how he became who is is today. Those importers should take up the challenge and start manufacturing same things they import and I bet you, It will be a win-win for everyone

when PMB said no to devaluation, some folks said he was a dullard, finally he was blackmailed to devalue the naira and yet we are complaining.

The naira devaluation was never the right step, our so called economic analysts keep confusing and misinforming Nigerians, they said foreign investors will come when we devalue, am yet to see those investors o.

I think sometimes we get over emotional as to what is the way forward, The devaluation thing was definitely not a good option in my opinion. I was one of those who stuck with the President not to devalue the naira. He was very right then, I only hope fuel price does not increase at this rate. Sometimes as Nigerians we need to learn more to absorb shock and think more before we leap.

Interesting post.
Made-in-Nigeria products are produced by imported items.

It would be good for you and others have a rethink.

A large quantity of necessary parts was just delayed by a corporation because of just increased import duty.
There is no need to postpone the Righteous day; i repeat though painful, it must start now.

I wouldnt have dignified you with a reply cos your arguments reeks of nepotism, and insult. but I hope you ll learn better.
I have seen Dangote's management team posted even here on Nairaland and it cut across all regions, including a white man and an Indian. wait, what stops an Igbo Man or a yoruba Man from building a business empire just like Dangote and make all his managements of his ethnic descent. who would it hurt?
most importantly, read my post again, I talked about meeting our local consumption, not export before you start blabbing about timber-wood analogy. Dangote started with the Nigerian market, and right now he is gradually expanding to other African Nations.

how do you expect masses to look inward and build?
in an economy where an individual will by accident or chance step into the political arena, and before you say Jack Robinson
He has moved 50billion naira?
and to cap it all, unfortunately you will still manage to find ZOMBIES and WAILERS somehow
worshiping and hailing such an individual! huh

Baba no mind these fellas. How can a building stand without a solid foundation.
- loan Interest rate is over 20%
- electricity is very very erractic
- Industries like ajaokuta steel industry gone extinct making raw materials import dependent
How can manufacturers compete? . Not forgetting the numerous taxes (some fradulent) by our corrupt officials. One reason richard brandson (owner of virgin airline) ran away from doing bizness in nigeria sometime.
President of manufacturers association of 9ja once said on NTA "
****************************************The cost of manufacturing in nigeria is two times the cost of what you'll get in ghana & 9times the cost of what you'll get in china.
How can one then compete internationally via export with such cost of manufacturing?
***************************************
#even the stats on "Ease of doing Business" by World bank proves so.

Good point but you didn't finish it well.
Have you thought of RAW MATERIALS for local production?
Almost all aspects of production in Nigeria has an imported raw material in it.
Nigeria does not have all the raw materials for production so this post above will only keep increasing the cost of finished goods locally.
I respect your display of maturity in quoting me, unlike those who are born to curse and abuse.

There are Raw Materials in Nigeria, but Untapped
Google "location of raw material in Nigeria" and you will be shocked.
The only issue is that we are scared of investing in them

I think the issue is policy somersault. If we want to discourage import then we should continue with this trend. Am just worried that after this govt another will encourage import thereby destroying the foundation that might have been laid for local production.

Whether apc, pdp or labour party, I think we should be consistent.

Of a truth, they don't
But since they are not the market to patronize Innoson, It's no problem.
All the politicians in Nigeria can buy the numbers of vehicles one transporter
will buy.
Example:- Peace Mass Transit alone operates over 2000 buses
