ATERI:

From 1960 until today, there is no single administration that can be considered to be better than the first coming of Buhari. Muritala Mohammed came close but was only in power for 6 months. Both Gowon and Obasanjo as military leaders ruled Nigeria when money was no issue. Buhari governed Nigeria for less than 2 years after the civilians have totally destroyed the psyche of the nation. Buhari took over and gave Nigeria a commendable sense of direction and financial discipline. That was what the Nigeria of that time demanded and Buhari gave us that. Have you forgotten War Against Indiscipline? Have you forgotten regular update on the state of the nation? Have you forgotten counter-trade? His number two was accused of not smiling, he replied that he smiled whenever he was about to collect his salary; there was financial discipline.
Human rights abuses? you bet! Nepotism and tribalism? Absolutely! Truth is, Nigerians were ready to forgive that because a larger goal was at stake. The common man was happy but the powerful felt offended, because of their inability to steal under his leadership. Please, we shouldn`t re-write history by viewing the past through the jaundiced lenses of today. Newswatch was a credible magazine until Dele Giwa was murdered, not after!

Enforced discipline will have a hard time in a democratic setting of post 2015 Nigeria. Its easier now if nurtured, not forced on people. As you can see what the corruption fight and militancy raid has resulted in; more trouble for you eventho u meant good initially.

My mentor wanted the general back in 2015, but I told him what he expects is not gonna be easy now. It will work well in a military setting, like we had in him and Murtala.
Just like choosing between trump and hillary. Diplomacy rules the world now, especially a complex country as ours. Or else you mess things up.
I hope we never make this mistake again; of using a 1983 idea to lead a 2016 generation.

I keep saying this, that the bulk of people who voted this man to power were around 18-27years of age. They knew nothing about this man, they only relied on his sweet words which were new to them. Most of them were very lazy to research more about him beyond what he said. The man is the most unreliable person one can have as a leader.
on the contrary, I was just a few years past 27 during the election campaign BUT I never fell for the sugar coated lies from Buhari and his machinery. I asked myself, what was his achievement when he had all the power to himself? Nil....I asked myself what has he contributed to the nation's growth since he left Dodan barracks for over 30 years? Nil, no philanthropic endeavor of note..we only hear from him when it gets to election time...obasanjo and most of his colleagues went back to school to get more enlightened and knowledgeable but he never did...I was very little during his first rule, but that is why we have the bloody internet! one could get a centuries worth of knowledge and history at the tip of his fingers....so WHY did learned nigerians fall for such deciet??

....and who would they have voted? Jona?

Those who voted Buhari were far more interested in throwing out GEJ than they were about what they were bringing in. A case of chasing out the Cat to bring in the Lion.

Honestly, very incisive.I took my time and read this, very very good, archiver, but the truth is that GEJ because of the high hopes Nigerians bestowed on him was dashed.Forget what anyone can say,we for still manage Nigeria was bad about CORRUPTION.God Bless Nigeria

And you think GEJ would have been a better option? How exactly? The house was already crumbling as it were. By now, GEJ and noi would have borrowed out Nigeria to IMF and world Bank. The major drawbacks have been militant criminals disturbing power and the economy. Asides that, every other thing will have happened and even worse and faster.

The point I was making has to do with the difference between Buhari of the 80s and the Buhari of today. There is no single Nigerian that would view our political history objectively and conclude that any past leaders of Nigeria did better than Buhari of the 80s. Not a single one! Buhari governed Nigeria in the 80s impeccably. But the Buhari of today has made it difficult for Nigerians to remember the Buhari of the 80s. The Buhari we have today is getting the basics wrong, that has nothing to do with this being a democracy or not. Not just good enough!
The problem with Nigerians is that, we are all guilty of what we accuse others of.
When Obasanjo became President in 1999, he wanted to impress the Yorubas, having betrayed them over the years. Obasanjo`s appointments favoured Yorubas and Igbos more than the Northerners, that was the reason why the North threw Sharia at him. So Buhari`s lopsided appointments today should not be blown out of proportion. Goodluck Jonathan did the same, so why not Buhari?
My problem with Buhari today ranges from hypocrisy ( his children are schooling abroad while asking us to look inward ) to lack of empathy ( refusing to give 5k to the unemployed ), not forgetting his total dullness when it comes to representing Nigeria and Nigerians abroad. If he had got these right, I would be the first to defend his economic record and tell those that are not happy about it to jump into the sea!

Your opening paragraph is a disaster. One that makes me ask how old you were in 1986. No offense intended. If you were grown up then and read magazines you wouldn't have stated that Newswatch was a magazine of no repute. It was the best magazine of that era. It had four of the best columnists of the time. Late Dele Giwa, Dan Agbese, Soji Omotunde and Yakubu Mohammed. So much so that Dele Giwa was killed with a letter bomb.
Corruption was very high under Jonathan, but the economy was stable and Nigeria was a foreign investment destination. Unfortunately this is no longer true. Haba. [/quote ]

Newswatch was only glossy and not reputable under those names you mentioned. They eventually sold out their conscience. That is why it was possible for Jimoh Ibrahim to finally buy and bury Newswatch!

If you agreed that corruption was very high under Jonathan, then it will be very unwise of you to say "the economy was stable." How can the economy be stable under high corruption. It further shows your love for "glossy" rubbish!
