I see what you're driving at. Actually smoking can neither be categorised as good nor bad.

My point is, any preaching that is not backed by the Bible is subject to individual opinions & interpretations and as such should not be used as a strict yardstick for judging others. Take your smoking example for instance. The Bible makes no mention of it, so in the strict sense whether you smoke or not doesn't determine if you're a good Christian or not. Now what matters is the reason for smoking. Am I smoking in order to keep warm in cold weather, or just to feel like a celebrity? This is the part that is subject to opinions.
In the same vein the Bible is against premarital sex, adultery and fornication, but does not concern itself with how many times a day a married couple has intercourse per day. Why should man then begin to make his own rules and impose it on others?

I know what you're talking about and I believe strongly in preaching what the Bible says. Sometimes however, we do read books that cover other aspects of lives so we can be well formed & balanced. There's no reason smoking is good for keeping warm as there are so many other choices of keeping warm. Bible says nothing about it but health wisely, we know it's dangerous. We all know too much of everything is called addiction. That is what he meant. Don't get addicted to sex. There's more to marriage than sex. You can only understand this if you're married.
