Sad but true...Now agriculture is the key!As a lawyer, lemme tackle the law aspect. The op couldn't have said it better.I was telling someone today that the legal profession isn't all that its cracked up to be.People hail you "the law ,barrrister"! If they knew what's up.First of all, with the way law school churns out barristers sometimes up to 5000 new wigs in a year, where would they practice? Many firms are aware of the proliferation of young lawyers and therefore see it as a way to underpay most of us.The profession is one that pays off after many years of experience and hardwork .The lucky ones are those from influential families who assist them to rise to the pinnacle of the profession. My boss is a renowned lawyer and he had it rough. Today, after 28 years at the bar,he is very comfortable but had to pay his dues for 15 years before he started making it.For those watching how to get away with murder and suits series, biko law is not like that in Nigeria. You are like a blank slate after law school..University and law school teaches you very little.Dont let law series mislead you! Its in active practice you get to learn the nitty gritty of the job. Look for honest lawyers that would be willing to tell you the realities on ground before deciding to study law.If you have the passion for it,don't expect to start making it once you are called to bar.It boils down to the grace of God, luck and connections. In all,i love being a lawyer.. I derive joy and fulfilment from what i do. |

trademoore1:a thousand clap for you pal....u made the most reasonable comment on this thread.....I pity the Op and other fail nairalander for supporting his thrash.....How can you tell your sons and daughter not to study courses like medicine and surgery because it is over hyped.....I might not be opportuned to study medicine and other Engineering courses but one of my children must be a medical doctor or a competent Engineer#how can someone say medicine is overhyped when a medicine student get up to 60k a month during service here at FMC Owo in ondo state while others who are being posted to mushroom school hardly get up to 10k here in Ondo state......mehn!!! Medicine,Engineering courses,Law,Accounting leads while others follow....I'll never allow any of my children go to university to study any jargons courses like soil science,Zoology,Botany, fishries etc that is not even marketable here in Nigeria. |

fawaz050:I totally agree with you. Some parents I know "force" their children into doing a course which is mainly for their own benefits, not the children's benefits. As for me, I'm an aspiring writer, graphic designer, editor and that's where I'm going to, not even my parents can stop me lol |

freke23:yes. i should dumb down to your level where you believe medicine, engineering etc are worthless while using a product of the very field you deride to post your thrash get lost and quit mentioning me if you have nothing intelligent to say. |

incomplete list...computer science should be added everybody wants to become bill gate, Steve job, mark zukerberg, jobberman......today we have over 5million developers across d globe...in Lagos nigeria alone u will find over 50 ICT firms...the most annoying thing is that most people that has succeeded in their various ICT firms are not even computer science graduates.. this is an overated course and u can learn different areas of this course in different firms without a certificate in computer science |

lative:Things you can be in a Nigerian home 1. A doctor 2. An engineer 3. A disgrace Jokes apart. Most parents want their children to be engineers/doctors. And most people think its the best. Medicine that isnt the hardest course has the highest cut off mark in every nigerian university. And it doesnt bring in that much money |

DBestDoc:Forget that story, what the op is saying is that people give the above courses more credit than they actually deserve. Most nigerian parents will b shouting medicine engineering. Etc and its not good at all |

I stopped reading ur shit immediately i jumped (yes, i meant jumped cos i did knew wat d content wld b lyk) to engineering n i saw u wrote dis "Is it computer science which you don't even need to study to know more about it than the graduates themselves". If u achieved dat without studying it, den i guess u shld b mad by now. Cos codes turns head nutts sharpaly dan juju itself. Do u knw how much organization who doesn't joke with dia secret does with real tym hackers? Dia lyf depends on it. They keep looking 4 ways to block loop holes away from other black hats. Still dis black hats penetrate into anytin dey want. Do u tink programming language is a related to ur dialect language which u can mess with? Or networking which is a Course on its own. If u no get beta tin to write abt, shut ur device down biko |

Great students! Intellectuals! Young Nigerians! Read my signature and you'd have a better approach to this topic. I have been force to air my views due to the hullabaloo going on here! OP is wrong and OP is right! What matters more is your ability to be innovative! 'Nothing is new under the sun' who says so?- the author of Ecclesiastics! How many years ago? Thousands of years ago. No course is a 'crap' some are just out rightly over hyped! While some are Underrated. The over hyped ones gives people a false hope while the Underrated ones gives people the jitters to explore thier ideas. Remember nothing is new, none is better! All that is required is innovation. You doubt? Compare whatsapp and BBM and 2go! We all knows which is more preferable today all because of innovation. Talk of Yahoo and Google, compare their history! Follow your dreams Peace! |

ITbomb:Mr. man you know nothing about petroleum engineering. From your comment you think petroleum engineering is limited to drilling. If I may ask you, tell me the branches of petroleum engineering, you will only say drilling engineering. In Petroleum Engineering we have, 1. Reservoir Engineering 2. Production Engineering 3. Drilling Engineering 4. Petroleum economist 5. Well formation evaluator 6. Completion Engineering 7. Artificial lift Though, oil companies in Nigeria do convert mechanical and co to drilling engineers but for others aspect of petroleum engineering they can't give you the job because you don't have the foundation. In Standford, Alberta, King Fahd university of petroleum and top universities in the world, petroleum engineering is studied in both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Next time, stick to what you studied. |

naijababe:Babe, he gave a few valid points, especially from the view of financial potential for the average Joe in Nigeria. Yes, he's guilty of the regular distortions; not knowing what 'fact' means. There are other profits of education, and they really are not overhyped, but he gave a few good points nonetheless. As usual, after reading stuffs on here, I pick what I need, and move on with my business. |
