PHOTOS: Female Athlete Dives Across Finish Line To Win Gold Medal At The RIO Olympics

Female Olympian, Shaunae Miller, representing the Bahamas has shocked the world with a dive feat which earned her a place in the competition’s Gold ranking table.

The sprinter who pulled what has been described as one of the wildest and most spectacular finishes in the Rio 2016 competition finished first in the women’s 400m race as she dived her way across the finish line.


The athlete who started off strong in the race was caught up with by the four gold medal winning Allyson Felix who was believed to have wrapped up the race until the sudden dive which changed the whole story.



Following her announcement as the winner, she said: “I’ve never done it before.


“I have some cuts and bruises, a few burns… it hurts”.

Miller added: “When I was on the ground I didn’t know I’d won,’ the gold medalist added. ‘I still don’t know how it happened.



“What was in my mind was I had to get a gold medal. The next thing I was on the ground. It’s an amazing feeling”.

22-year-old Miller finished the race to win a Gold medal in 49.44 seconds.

After months or even years of training, any legal means of winning the gold medal is allowed.

Diving actually slows you down more than it helps

According to Ralph Reiff, the executive director of St. Vincent Sports Performance in Indianapolis, Ind., the best way to finish a race is by running—not flying—through the line.

“Speed, from a mechanical standpoint, is how much force you can put into the ground from your torso to your glutes to your upper leg, all the way to your big toe,” says Reiff. “If you put your force into the ground and follow that up by flying through the air and don’t drop your other foot, you start to decelerate.”

Reiff, who managed athlete care at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, likens it to a baseball player diving headfirst into first base to avoid being thrown out. “Rarely does that become a successful play,” says Reiff. “You lose all of your forward motion.”

While Porter’s dive played nicely in the media, those who re-watch the race can see that he was already across the finish line and then vaulted forward. “He had completed his task and then lunged and hyper-extended his front leg,” notes Reiff. “The safe way to get out of that was to jump forward, take the load off of that leg and dive.”

How in the Seven Kingdoms is that cheating? The goal is to get from point A to point B in the shortest possible time. However you do it without breaking any rule is inconsequential. You can teleport if you like.
