Deciding on where to host your website can be difficult and time-consuming as it is not so easy a decision to make. There are a few considerations you will want to make from the outset even before deciding on some other more technical aspects of your web hosting expectations.

These will include the available disk space, available bandwidth, cost of web hosting, technical support, server reliability and available tools on the web hosting platform.

We have covered some of these in greater detail in an earlier publication and will like to recount:
Remember that the choice of your web hosting company will significantly determine how successful your web hosting business can be. It would be wrong to build a high traffic website and choose a hosting plan that can’t support it. So, understanding your web hosting needs is necessary before choosing a web host that you may use for years to come. Here are some of the most important considerations you need to address before choosing a web host.

Be Aware of Your Budget

Web hosting is often seen as an unnecessary expense, especially when starting up a website, which makes it tempting to grab the first free or low cost offer. But actually, web hosting is an investment that can prove to be highly rewarding in the feature.

Decide on the Type of Hosting

It should be obvious that not all types of websites need the same level of hosting performance. Consider the nature of your website before you begin looking at the different types of hosting.

In general there are three types of servers for hosting:

Shared servers: This is the cheapest type of hosting due to many sites being put on the server. You will have limited resources, but if you’re just putting up a small blog or personal website shared hosting may be sufficient.
Dedicated servers: As the name implies, a dedicated server means that only your site will run on that specific server. This is the most reliable option, but does not come without a higher cost. Depending on the size of the server and other hosting features, dedicated servers can cost you from less than a hundred a month up to thousands.
Virtual servers: Not quite a shared server or a dedicated server, and the price reflects that as it is usually in between the other two options. You don’t have full resources like a dedicated server, but your site won’t be interfered with if other sites on the server are trying to hog resources. It’s a good option for professional websites that aren’t too large or complex.

If you expect that your website traffic will grow considerably over time, talk with potential hosts and make sure that your hosting is easily scalable.

Tech Support

There are many different levels of tech support these days. If your website is responsible for income, you’ll want to ensure that any problems you have are solved as soon as possible, look for 24/7 support. If you just have a small personal blog, this probably isn’t as big of a deal, but check for support with technical things like setting up a website if this is your first project. Finally, hosting companies typically offer support primarily through one channel. Whether you prefer email, phones, or online ticket-based systems, find a host that offers it. Having managed IT services is something to look for in a company because they have people on the clock all the time unlike other companies who handle their own IT.

Customer Reviews

Companies can claim all sorts of things, but you won’t know if they deliver until you actually hear from existing customers. Try to find reviews online, or even better talk to someone you know that has hosting with a particular company. Beware of reviews that have affiliate links and may not be genuine. Use intricate, data-gathering tools to check out the uptime and downtime analysis for web hosts to confirm if hosts actual deliver what they promise.

Control Panel

If you don’t have a lot of experience working with websites, you will definitely want to pick a host that offers a control panel. Popular control panels like cPanel or Plesk are simple user interfaces that lets you easily modify your website. Some even contain plugins that allow you to install popular software like WordPress onto your domain name with one click.

Now that you know what you need to consider before purchasing hosting for your website, spend some time comparing your options and find one that is in your price range. Hosting can make your experience simple or very difficult, so choose right.

Does Hosting in Nigeria Make any Difference?

Yes! It does. The top web hosting companies in Nigeria rely on infrastructures in North America and Europe. It simply means that in terms of quality, there is no difference between what you get in Nigeria and what you can get in any part of North America and in Europe.

However, there are some advantages in localizing your web host:

1. Ease of payment: Where there are difficulties with making payments, it is easy to make a payment to a local bank and get your service activated. With frequent change in policies by the Central Bank due to the serious challenges with exchange rate fluctuations, making e-payments have become a problem and there had been reduction on spending limits and sometimes, some debit cards are simply not allowed to make e-payments to foreign accounts and on international websites. Hosting in Nigeria makes it easy to contact your choice web host to provide an alternative bank account to which you can conveniently make deposits.

2. Support: Most Nigerian hosting providers have a direct GSM line which you can call and get instant support. In some cases, they could have a physical presence in the city where you live and that makes it quite easy for you to resolve issues.

3. Budget: If your intension is to spend less on web hosting, then subscribing to a Nigerian hosting provider will be a good choice.
Warning: most cheap web hosts can be a problem as they provide limited support and very minimal disk space. In fact, they may have to limit the amount of bandwidth available to you just to see that you are not using up too much for the low fee you pay for web hosting.

This however does not apply to every web host as some still offer unlimited bandwidth for every package the offer especially on shared hosting.

Beware of Bogus Offers

We have seen some web hosts offer unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth. These are not impossible but they come with some conditions. If you carefully read the terms of service for every web hosting company, you will find that there some clauses which tend to prescribe how you can use their resources.

Unlimited disk space does not mean that you can load all the things on their server. There is a way you will use the resources and your account will be suspended for unfair usage. The fact is that a server is a computer and every computer is limited by its own space. So in practice, there can be nothing lie unlimited disk space. What a web hosting company who is offering unlimited space will do is to open the entire available space to you and not place a restriction. But that will be for as long as your usage does not threaten the business.

Unlimited bandwidth on the other hand is easier to offer and deliver as bandwidth are generally less expensive and are always massively available.

Most Nigerian web hosts will define the disk space and bandwidth available to you and this is considered a fair and honest business practice. It should be recommended that you understand the limits from the start so you do not get frustrated as you begin serious business and use much space on your chosen web hosting platform.

Hope this peice provides a goos enough information to help you with the choice of a suitable web hosting platform in Nigeria.

Last week, Nigeria's renowned webhost, contacted me to inform that they had a server failure and all my website content have been lost. Before I could doff my hat for these people but with what I know now, I can never use a Nigerian host. They are not competent enough. They will fail you and they will abandon you.

https://www.nairaland.com/3282426/whogohost-why-never-use-nigerian

If you want to host your website please use a good foreign host i.e
ipage
hostagator
bluehost
1and1
godaddy

They collect the Naira equivalent. They are reliable. They have good uptime, they have good customer service. As for Nigerian hosts, get ready for depression

N/B: I am not trying to spoil hosting companies in Nigeria. But if you think I am being malicious, kindly go ahead with your heart

This is very informative. I have a question though. How possible is it to migrate an already purchased domain to a Nigerian Host?

We have at least a recent case: ogoninewsng.com moved from Bluehost to Todhost.com very recently without issues. Nigerian hosts can sometimes be better. Even in terms of applying penalties, I tell you the truth, Nigerian hosts are more tolerant than these foreign hosts because they understand that some of the things people do are done out of ignorance and not to commit a crime.

Cool because I saw a domain that has my name for sale. Thinking of buying it when the economy improves. I know oyibo and their usual wahala. Wouldn't want to keep my page in another man's land so yeah it is a step in the right direction.

I only buy domains mainly the .ng TLDs

For hosting, I have suffered a lot from Nigeria companies over 2 years, it was all down time problem, lost of s whole website, poor customer service and incompetent technical support. You will tell them a problem and they can't just be smart to solve it, I will have to be guiding them on what tgdy should do from things I have researched online.

I ran to siteground and now I can't even try any other host again because I feel so comfortable.

I on VPS that cost $80 per month with more than 48 websites on it.

Good speed, awesome cache technology, super customer services, hack proof server among slot

The fact and reality is that server security is the responsibility of clients everywhere. Firewall and server security is a private issue for most web hosts but for the website owners, it should be their responsibility to use strong passwords, secure their local computers, protect the email attached to their websites and secure their client area passwords. Just to mention a few.

We will do a full blog on this issue, may be next week.
