The police yesterday uncovered plans to abduct ‘Arugba’, the votary maid ahead of the grand finale of this year’s edition of the Osun Osogbo festival fixed for tomorrow.

The police said some unknown gun men had perfected plan to abduct her during the ceremony fixed for tomorrow. Speaking with newsmen on the development in Osogbo, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Femi Oyeleye, said intelligence reports received by the police confirmed that some evil doers had perfected plan to perpetrate the dastardly act with a view to denting the glamour associated with the yearly festival.

He said: “We have received intelligence report that some people are planning to kidnap the Arugba Osun. The monarch of the town also said this. So we have increased surveillance around the Arugba to prevent this.

We have reinforced security around the Arugba and even the ‘igba’ so that the festival can go on without any hitch. “We are also assuring worshippers and all visitors of adequate security.

The crime rate in Osun State is one of the lowest in the country and we will do everything to sustain this. “Before Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun also reported the case to us, the command has already beefed up security across the state, especially in Osogbo ahead of the festival to foil the plan
