Thanks a lot for the thread. By the way pardon if my English might not be clear enough for your understanding.

To my concern/plea;
I am have completed three years of academic studies from a maritime academy with my cert. in BT, SSAT-SDSD, ISM, E-WATCH, and BTOC. I have also a copy of my grades from my school, though not a TOR (Transcript of Record), more so I have my Engine Room Daily Journal, ISF Engine Cadet Training Record Book (TRB). Medical and SIRB, I have also.

Op you did well creating the Seafarer thread so all on Nairaland can rendezvous here.

Most Nigerians go into sea job just for the money and the opportunity of being employed.

The corruption starts from the ship. Most of the vessels do illegal bunkering and that is what attracts people from different profession to flood into the system like as if there is manner offshore. Some companies are aware but instead of fighting it they accept their own share.

It's only in Nigeria a company will ask a fresh applicant who has no sea experience to bring WATCH KEEPING CERTIFICATE before he will be employed instead of accepting the person as an OS to enable him get six months sea term before going for EDH and upgrade himself.

In Jamaica all their seafarers must attend their maritime school which is two years before obtaining an AB Deck or AB engine license with phases of going to sea in between studies.

Maritime Academy is sinking and the ministry of Transport in which the school is under is not responding to her distress. They don't inspect the school any longer to know exactly the problem of the school. It's not about pumping money into the system but ensuring the money being pumped is utilized for its purpose. Several cadets left maritime academy to Ghana maritime because they have what it takes to produce standard mariners not half baked.

Most Nigerians go on board to steal and destroy ship items. The insecurity around our waters has a lot to do with illegal bunkering operations carried out by ship crew.

We have to embrace discipline in everything we do. Most companies do not accept our license not because they have issues with the Academy but with the country as a nation. They believe anything about Nigeria is fraud or not genuine.
Cause those in the office wants their relatives to be in a position weather qualified or not.

How will Nigeria seafarers celebrate June 25th Seafarers day when no positive impact to their lives even ordinary protection from Nimasa we don't have.

We know u ain't dumb.... but getting COC without onboard experience is worrisome though.... cos when you finally land that dream job, you must carry out your job perfectly, because it's assumed you know the job before the OOW licence was issued out to you by NIMASA, you won't expect your chief officer or second engineer to keep watch together with you because of your incompetency

I'm almost rounding up my sea phase training dis year... to join next year COC class... it's not really easy out especially as an engine cadet working aboard a 5440KW powered AHTS vessel

I think NIMASA is really trying to cut down some Fake people coming with fake stamps on their discharge booklets by first putting a call to the company to verify if you really worked onboard their ship before interviewing you for your eligibility letter.

*The daily life is boring but since its what I do.. I always make the best use of my time by reading, the daily routine is the same everyday : Eat, Work, Sleep, also good crew can make your day on-board worthwhile

*AHTS, PSV daily life is the same.... though PSV contracts are usually short term due to the nature of their job, because some AHTS serves as PSVs too, In short AHTS are multipurpose boat though PSV have larger deck space

*I've not worked on offshore platforms, so I can't tell how they life their lives but those guys are living the life men!!!! Though in an hazardous environment 

*Like I replied earlier, AHTS vessel is a good investment rather than PSVs, because AHTS serve the purpose of static towing, and Supply.. if u've been to Onne Port u'll see a lot of PSV vessels on anchorage without contracts, their contracts are always short termed except when commissioning or decommissioning an oil installation 

* AHTS and Security Patrol boats are more in demand 

*I've not not worked onboard NLNG vessels, even though most of their captains are white folks, I guessed they are paid well, I think they might not be paid below N1.8million if converted to Naira monthly‎

i havent been to Onne actually,your facts are valid from my research AHTS vessel are able to secure more contracts. Btw Tugs and Ahts vessel is their any really big difference?

The Average life span of a ship engine depends on the maintenance culture of the engine crew and company's zeal to supply spares for maintenance, though every five years continuous survey is carried out where the ship's engine must be totally overhauled (change of piston, cylinder head and liner, oil and water pumps, new valves, sometimes new crankshaft according to crank shaft deflection reading) and also the hull of the ship is sand blasted and lot of stuffs onboard are changed, then a surveyor from classification society like Lloyd's register, ABS, Bureau Veristas inspects and certifies that the ship is sea worthy.

So most ships engine life span can stay for more than 30 years (Because I have seen product tankers that are still plying Nigerian Waters that was built in 1978)

We have dry docks here in Nigeria that offer the above services, yeah it cost multi millions of Naira, I don't have an idea because it depends on the scope of job to be done on the vessel and different dry docks have their price tag

Lack of Marine Schools A country that almost half of its States has a channel connecting to the high sea can not boast of one international recognised Maritime institution.
To mention the few in the country,


Maritime academy of nigeria oron akwa ibom (federal)
Oceanography (private) Lagos state
Joe Marine (private) delta state
Charkins maritime (private) port harcourt.

Maritime academy is a very old institution but still operates in the shadows, it's over populated and under funded, lacks advanced simulators, outdated solas equipment, which every marine institution should have, lecturers are outdated.
Why outdated? In the maritime world, things change every day, new laws are made, new techniques introduced, advanced technologies are adopted etc but lecturers still teaches what is not needed, and you end up wasting your money and time.
JOE MARINE in terms of teaching remains the best in Nigeria closely followed by Charkins maritime but all that is for the elementary stages of your career because as you progress, you will need to leave the Shores of Nigeria to get better certificates.

All true, but oceanography is federal, and not private.

stars maritime is private, and i won't recommend the school for you, coz they are not recognized by nimasa. The two schools that are recognized are maritime academy of nigeria and oceanography.

pls, I need experienced one to put me through, I am a cadet but with no result but got all my mandatory done and ever since I left school, I have been searching for sea term placement but all to no avail and right now I am married but still pressing forward to gaining placement because I love sea apart from the so called monetary terms attached to the job. my question is can I still go in as a cadet or wiper? if I am to go in as a cadet, won't I be hunted latter in the future when it is time to show my maritime ND certificate? and if I am to go in as wiper, what document do one suppose to have to be qualified for a wiper position and how many month or year sea term I am to serve as a wiper and the next step to take after finishing sea term as a wiper? pls I need your directive. thanks

The Nigerian Navy has released list of successful candidates in the Aptitude Test written on 2 December 2017 for the 2017/2018 Direct Short Service Course (DSSC) 25.
