He Spent Over N6m For Masters In U.K But Regretting It Because No Job Yet by onismate: 8:45am On Aug 27, 2016
Here is the story of my friend who is not happy at all. After spending a huge sum for his masters in UK, he's yet to be employed. Read below....

I graduated from the university in 2011 and finished my NYSC in 2012. I had already planned my life I didn’t want to waste much time before going for my master’s degree if I didn’t get a good job.

A month before my POP in 2012, I got a job offer in an oil firm in Port Harcourt that I served. With a salary of N50,000 they offered, I wasn’t satisfied with it. I wanted better even when part of me insisted on taking the offer. I had to tell my mom that I wanted to sell some of my late dad’s property to raise money to go to U.K for my masters. My mom totally refused. She objected on me selling any of my dad’s property to go abroad for my master. And she has also refused to give me money for school fees. She no want make I travel. She said she would only support me if I wanted to start a business.

Not that we are so rich, we are just okay. My mom runs her own boutique in Abuja. my dad only left us with 4 landed properties and I intended selling off 3 to raise money to go for my master’s in U.K, and I didn’t know where to raise any money. I thought about everything, it was really killing me. My late dad left four landed properties in Abuja, and my mom didn’t want me to sell any of them. She wanted me to keep them.

A week after my service, I had to trick my mom after much pressure I placed her in. She allowed me to only sell 2. I told her I wanted to use the money to start an agriculture business. Na so she give me permission to sell. And I didn’t even sell it for as much reasonable price just because I was so desperate. I was not patience enough and my mom was terribly angry with me. I supposed to realize about N11m on the two land sales because it was located in a good area. But I wasn’t patient enough. I hurriedly realized N7. 8m from the sales. I paid my tuition fee and every other ones in the U.K. After everything. While I was still waiting for my Visa confirmation, I mom will keep asking when and the plans about my business. I will tell her I was still working on it. I got my Visa before telling my mom. My mom nearly went ballistics when I told her I was using the money for my masters in U.K. I had to beg and kept begging. Even when I was leaving for U.K, she didn’t even talk to me. She felt betrayed about what I did.

After my masters, I came back late 2014. I and my mom had finally reconciled, I felt fulfilled that my value has risen in the labour market. Not until after job hunting for 2 months, it looked as if my education was nonsense. It looked as if I wasted my time and money in U.K for masters and was not able to get any reasonable job. Employers no even send my U.K certificate sef. After spending about N6.7m for my school, stay and all expenses in U.K, I am yet to get reasonable offer. I am beginning to regret, I would have heeded to my mom’s advice to use the money for business.

This is 2016 and yet no job. And I didn’t want my mom to know about my so many weird job hunting ordeals, because it would look as if it was out of my disobedience I refused to listen to her. The one that angered me most was the job interview I went for last week. It was boldly stated that they wanted people with masters. It was after the interview only for me to hear that the company only recruited Bsc holders. Infact I was told that the interview we did was just a formality, the company had taken people they wanted. I was so pained when I heard that. That was not the first time such a thing is happening. There is no longer equality in Nigerian job hunting labour system. To get a job now is about “WHO IS YOUR FATHER” or “WHO DO YOU KNOW.”

Well, but I know God, am being hopeful that soon I will get a good job. I just decided to take the little money I have to do start up a small business.

Sad story. With 6.7m, my brother you for don start better business o. Even if you get a decent job now without any experience, you won't be paid more than 200k/month except, of course, it's an oil company. If you earn 200k, it will take you almost three years to get back the 6.7m. If you had acquired more professional certifications, you'd have been better off. I pray you get something better sha. I know you will eventually.

One thing I have come to realize in this country, as one is studying in the university, one needs to develop his/her business side of making money, if you had diverted half of the 6million naira on a business, am sure by now, you will be employing graduates in your company...Getting job in this country is something else!

The good news is that your education is valuable, but the sad news is that you are the cause of your unemployment. Am serving right now but earning six figure income monthly from blogging. I will still insist that you should create a job for your self if there is none.

It takes the grace of God to hit a job opportunity without connection in the present day Nigeria. You should have listened to your MUM. Good tidings always come with that. Someone close to me refused to listen to his Mum's advice.

He was working in a good and feasible computer firm only for him to wake up one day and say he was going to Lagos for a business invite from persons he had only communicated with via email. Clearly, it was a scam. His Mum noticing the obvious cautioned him after he brought the idea to her with a plan of selling a little part of their land for his purpose.

To cut the long story short. He did as he was. told by his mindset. Travelled with the huge sum of money to Lagos. Three years after, without contact with his family, he was returned by God knows who and with MADNESS. Even till date, his predicament lingers on.

The bottom line is, on your search for greener pastures, never ever neglect the advice of those ahead of you in life. There's a saying "What a youth sees standing up, an elder sees even more clearly while sitting down." This statement may not be in the right context but trust me when I say that it pays to listen to advises.

Sorry if I may have derailed. I just had to share. grin

I don't know why people will go for their Masters with the hope of landing a good job afterwards and not for the academic benefits which is the why one should go for his Masters. Nigerians will go for their Masters without zero work experience after B.Sc!

What course did your friend studied for his B.Sc and was his Masters done on that field? I have seen economics graduate travelling out to study Greek for their Masters in Ukraine!

I wish your friend goodluck.

Let me quickly say this...It's good to have high expectations, but realistic ones. Bros, believe it! Yes, your dream needs to be big. You tried, I must confess... I can see, your aspirations and dreams is seemingly beyond the capabilities of others, those who are thinking the opposite of it here. But it also must be believable.

You must be able to say that if certain things take place, if others help, if you work hard enough, though it is a big dream, it can still be done. Good example: A person with no college education can dream that he will build a $500 million-a-year company. That is big, but believable. Bad example: That a 90-year-old woman with arthritis will someday run a marathon in under three hours. It is big all right, but also impossible. She should instead focus on building a $500 million-a-year business! And she better get a move on!... This is a perfect way to utilize what you have available before other things follow up... from what you explain here, I saw 6.5m here, that was good enough to have started something with then, though!

The great achievers have a habit... I see that in you too. They “see” things. They picture themselves walking around in their own CEO office.. Remember, everybody can be a CEO... in their new N25 million corporate headquarters, even while they are sitting on a folding chair in their room without a job yet.. Get free-throw shooters in your masters degree pictures, the ball is going through the basket in your quest already, and believe it must Not start or end with your pedigree... Get over it and be stronger.. Wishing you the best

It's better to study bsc/first degree in uk than masters.
Op you doing your masters is not the problem. The only barrier you have is u don't have work experience. If had work in Nigeria before leaving nigeria, my brother, would've been looking for you.

If certificate is what guarantees a job. Why do you think Nigeria will still been having an army of unemployed youths?! The earlier you start thinking outside the box "certification" the better for you. Nigeria system doesn't have any regard for education any more. I suggest you start thinking of how to create a job for yourself and others.

not a WASTE dough
but lack of PLANNING and wrong MINDSET.........
6m gone like dat but I know dat nothing spent on education is a waste but come to think of it the two main purpose of education is to acquire knowledge and use d same to b of help to ur society and to urself....... that 6m could be have been used to start a good biz here in Naija and still obtain ur masters here in naija....maybe by now since u graduated 2012 u should have been an employer of labour and not the other way round..this is what I meant by wrong MINDSET....

Everything's gonna be alright. . . At least, you successfully completed your masters degree and you have something to show. Forget about the artificial value of the naira, N6.7 is a lot but it's also small money, depending on ur perspective.

But in the meantime, it's not a bad idea for u to consider being an entrepreneur. Economies are built by entrepreneurs and not job seekers. The certificate you have isn't a big deal in Nigeria cos a lot of people studied in Europe and America and returned here. Dem yapa! Just be prayerful and creative. Shalom!

Just some days ago I was trying to persuade someone from not spending about 10 million naira on msc outside the country. It makes no sense really. You could start a flourishing business with half of that.
