Prioritizing is one of the major reasons why Nigeria State Governors can’t seem to meet up with State workers’ salaries. In simple terms, lack of proper investment of fund into capital investment is a key problem to their failure in meeting up with their duties.

Don’t get me wrong FREE EDUCATION is GOOD but it comes with a downside and cost. We all know that if you want the best Health Care you have to be ready to pay huge sum to obtain it. Same goes for the best food/meal you have to pay for the best to get the best.
Saying Education is Free is a major challenge facing our society today, as Government can’t ensure that student get the best of Educational Training.

One major example on how funds are mismanaged can be sited from the case of Osun State Government. The recent School Building Project is a massive infrastructural development which is a laudable project embarked on by the state government to ensure that Primary – Secondary Schools within Osun state have the best infrastructures and a very conducive learning environment. However, one major flaw of this project is that the money invested into such infrastructures can’t be recouped back in the next 50 years, however if such massive building project were built or placed in the tertiary institutions of the state where fees are paid on Semester / Session basis, one can say that can be another avenue in which the invested funds is well invested and can in no time generate income, increasing the GDP of the State.
Building conducive learning environment is very important and should not be for tertiary institutions alone, however, spending huge capital on infrastructures that will be used for FREE will lack maintenance as the infrastructure cannot maintain itself.

In conclusion, Primary and Secondary Schools need to be renovated as the current Governor is doing. However, it should not be a wasted investment that will lack proper maintenance in future. The massive 2 – 4 storey buildings ought to be built for Osun State tertiary Institutions where students are mandated to pay tuition fee, and Primary School as well as Secondary School should get their own share of the development.

To some extent, I you are right.

The writer of this thing needs urgent evaluation.
One of the reasons why basic education should be prioritised is to reduce the no of people who might, in future, put up garbage post like this, people who vote PDP and people who run to pastors and Imams for miracle to solve the problems in their pathetic lives.

You know why liberal( progressive) states like California New York,Maine, Connetticut, Massachusett etc throw money at education.
I gave the reasons above
They would rather cut everything and increase taxes than cut education.
They double down on education. Refusing to do will result in neanderthals becoming the majority within one generation.
By the way, the economy of California alone is bigger than the French economy
One county ( local government area) in the state of California earns more from oranges than Nigeria will earn from crude oil this year.

the op is very much right, you are the one who gets him wrong.
In prioritizing, capacity development comes first. The money used in building new and model schools can be used and well utilized in agriculture(Kebbi), industrialization and harnessing technology(Anambra, Lagos) All these bring about creation of values which will be enjoyed by all in the short run and also automatically pave way for educational research; this will of course make education to be cherished and longed for by all and sundry as the impact of education will be seen and felt by all and sundry.

State Governments have been wasting trillion for decades with no profit, there basic infrastructures for the masses now should be among top piorities. Allow them the whole 4yrs, many will still have no profit to show for it.

If only they can learn to invest 20% of their monthly allocation on profitable investments, many states would have been able to run with the need for allocations from Abuja.

Very interesting post Mr. Op.

First of all, is the duty of osun state government to cater for the needs of osun citizens in general or just state government workers?

Please what percentage of citizens in osun work for the state government, do up to 10 percent of people living in osun work for the state government?

What percent of osun citizens are poor doing menial and semi-skilled jobs such as tailors, barbers, cleaners, mechanics, cooks at restaurants, etc?

Should the government prioritize the needs of its government workers over everyone else.

Today, there is mass poverty in the land. Quality free education increases the amount of money of every family whose child is enrolled in such public schools. This further enables the economy to keep flowing as people will use the money saved from school fees to buy food stuff and other basic necessities.

There are a lot of undiscovered gifted people in nigeria, who never had the opportunity to get quality education. As Professor Soludo stated last week, a key reason why nigeria is passing through this economic hardship is mass illiteracy.

America and England, both of these capitalist societies give free quality primary and secondary education. China a socialist society also gives free quality primary and secondary education. In these countries, the cost of tertiary education is prohibitively high and the unemployment rate amongst university graduates is low. In countries like Nigeria, Cuba, Saudi Arabia which offer free tertiary education, massive unemployment amongst graduates exists.

What do the first world countries understand that we the third world countries don't?

Why bother with these folks?
They have no skin in the game. They pay no taxes( at least 99% of Nigerians do not) and yet, they expect government to do everything out of the money tree behind government house.
Many of them, from the wealthy to the poor, use mobile phones worth 100,000K and above but do not contribute a farthing into the public purse.
It is no wonder that the lack of civic awareness lead them to vote for rogues and touts.
My entire educational life was done in schools with acceptable facilities. You cannot begin to appreciate the impact those facilities have had on me and my classmate.
In the states, there is a direct correlation between the achievement gap and the educational infrastructure. It is not a coincidence that schools in black neighbourhoods under achieve when compared to others. This achievement gap follow them for the rest of their lives

I think many of the state governors are just clueless when it comes to governance. Many of them are not equipped with the right orientation on how to run a state, they think its just propaganda, I can do this I can do that, when they get there and face reality, then it's too late. I just pity workers and feeble pensioners, they're at the receiving end.
