Let us not go tribal here.

And I will be very careful the way I word my write up,so I am not called a tribal bigot.

We have a problem in the East simple.

Had this friend in the University who had a problem staying in any relationship, and so I told him that the problems might not be the girls, but him.

I say this because,it is high time the Easterners start telling themselves the truth, and stop blaming everybody.

Women in the East and Babies:

I served and got my first post-graduate degree from the East (Super Lion) and during my stay in the East,I noticed one very important thing there, the lack of single mothers.

In the East, having a child outside wedlock is so "unofficially" Forbidden, that an attempt to have a baby without a husband,is like a death sentence.

No Eastern man will ever go near you again. I personally have not seen an Ibo man marry a lady with a child before, ever.

If Genevieve the actress ever gets married,I can bet my life it will not be an Ibo man,she will not be accepted as a single mom.

It is considered a shame for an average ibo man to bring a woman with a baby to his family, and that is why you will see an Ibo girl will do anything not to have a baby outside wedlock, and that includes doing abortions and selling their babies.

It is not a coincidence that you only find these baby factories only in the East.

Solution:

The Easterners should have an open mind, and not ostracize single mothers.

In doing so,the women will not go to any length in trying to hide their babies.
You are right, the average igbo man will not marry a single mother. And having babies outside marriage is abominable in the east.

Igbo girls will do well to close their legs beforw marriage or use condoms angry bc that culture is not about to change angry

My suggestion is to make marriage easier in the east, so people could marry early before their private parts start itching too much. The high cost of wedding has made the east the largest concentration of unmarried pretty girls( recipe for fornication.

O, one more thing, despite your efforts, I will still call u a tribal bigot tongue. (Just kidding)

You are so wrong. Igbos are not the only tribe with wayward girls. However, other tribes do not get pregnant and then sell on their babies.

These EASTERN baby factories have nothing to do with "single motherhood" or "unwarranted pregnancies".

These Igbo girls are getting pregnant INTENTIONALLY for the MONEY in exchange for their babies.

PURE AND SIMPLE !!!!
I actually think that both of you are correct. Most of these women get into the 'business' due to an unwanted pregnancy and the fear of becoming a single mother. However, it is the lure of 'easy' money that keeps them there, producing baby after baby with the intention of selling them. It's like any other high paying crime really, the lure of quick money is too difficult to pass on.

this issue doesn't have to do with Easterners alone. I know baby factories exist in Lagos and some other States in the west.

imagine what this world is turning to, producing baby after baby, for money? even married women do not find being pregnant palatable, despite three or four years spacing. na wa o, anyways the love of money, as the saying goes, is the root of all evils.

Police getting over-zealous as usual. Except there's other evidence beyond this "attept to sell unborn babies", this is unwarranted harassment of poor, unfortunate teens, who should rather be supported by the state. They don't even look anything near the end of their term, so the most likely thing on their minds now is livelihood.
Were they caught negotiating the sale? What would police present as evidence in a law court?
Everybody in here being carried away in the usual negative sentimental fashion, and not sparing a thought for the poor children involved.
In the absence of social nets, our younger generations suffer, and we cannot guarantee a safe society if we continue to ignore the welfare of the younger generation. In more civilized climes the girls' welfare would be taken over the the State, so the unborn children would be given a fair chance in life.
Let's continue to blame Buhari and governments, when we are all obviously equally clueless about social engineering.

You would have made sense if indeed you wrote in sincerity. Every culture abhors illegitimate pregnancy but no culture is absolutely free from it. It is a plus for Ndigbo if we actually have the lowest percentage of single mothers and it's worthy of emulation from others but you went deeper than you should by ascribing your personal feeling as an authoritative analysis on single motherhood among Igbos. Be careful while making such comments as you have no credible statistics to substantiate your fallacious assertions.

Much as your opinion hold some water, I doubt if a girl will intentionally get pregnant with all the inherent shame and societal sentiments, just to sell the baby.

My question is who buys the babies and for what?
Is infertility endemic among older women in the region? Is it for some diabolic black magic?
What exactly is driving the market?

HungerBad has said it all,,, having a child outside wedlock in igboland is almost like a taboo ,even if they want to keep the child it would be difficult for an ibo guy to marry a single mother,Yorubas are more open-minded about this....although no one knows if these girls actually want to sell their babies or they are scared of being tagged and rejected in their various hometowns, nevertheless its wrong to sell a child n yes I'm igbo cool
