I'm very happy about the Op's confession because it means things are really changing. Most people who hear anything about Aso rock and abuja expect to be given dollars and contracts like used to obtain in the past. The OP is clearly unaware that things have changed. If a handshake from the President of Nigeria is not enough for this ungrateful OP then nothing will ever be enough for him. This is the same scenario that played out with those bodyguards that were protesting that they were 'abandoned' by buhari after he became president when they were clearly given what was due to them after their contracts expired. There is no free meal again and no dollars to be shared anywhere again!

This is something else. You raise one's hope and smash it against a rock. That's not fair. My anger was that from the Op's tale, the PRESIDENT wasn't aware of such event. Probably just another SA swindling Airtel and trying to make cheap publicity cuz he can secure a 3 min window with the No. 1 angry angry angry

same here. Actually, this so called event was highly selective. It wasnt designed to favour the entrepreneurial energy of the Nigerian people.

i regretted attending. Sacrificed so much for leaving my job to pitch. on getting there, i was registered as a delegate. I became disappointed. After the organizers realized the massive number of potential pitchers, one Mr. something.. kun came up the idea to dismiss them by giving everyone 30 seconds to pitch behind the curtain. What a stupid man.

Anyway I was there and investors came, went round to check what the participants put on display,

Honestly the competition was not an open competition because the things they call innovations I saw there were all crop, you can imagine someone coming with an e-commerce platform that sells tyres and he calls that sh!t innovation, or someone with a loan initiative calling it innovation?!!!!!!!!!!, only about 3 innovative stuff there and out of the three I saw two were amongst the guys that saw Mr president.

Even the guy that had the guts to complain how did his name end up in the competition?.

And for the complainant you had a chance to be in the villa for 3 days, and meet alot of sponsors but you could not make anything meaningful out of it even contacts u no fit get,?

I was a part of an organisation that partly was there to oversee the event, and just by talking 2it random people there I got to make contacts with people from oracle, red hat, and Google, not to talk of the numerous government agencies I never knew of and have even secured a sponsor for one of my projects!!!

Was the complainant expecting to just get financial gains without really bringing anything of value to th table, cuz I presume him to be part of the remaining twenty or so people.with crappy stuff at the demo day

4. Where the other participants promised any monetary or promotional incentives before and during the programme?

God bless you bro for the bolded

I read through the post again and again and I was trying to see what the problem is.

Your name was first published on twitter, they contacted you officially through twitter chat some days later, A day to the event they called to tell you they will handle your flight tickets, they lodged you in a good hotel. You even showcased your stuff and they chose the best 3 and you couldn't mingle with people or get reasonable contacts if not for anything you may need them someday.

Just saying hello sir I am XYZ we met at Aso villa demo day and you gave me your contact will make it easier for you to meet some people again.

Was he expecting to be given cash on the spot or something. I thought its a demo.

And yes airtel could have decided to give the top 3 3million each. It most likely not in partnership wt Fg, companies do these things all the time naa

Too bad....

Not meaning to sound cocky, but we were all amazed when they said they were only going to pick 30...not the initial 50 "finalists"

Thinking back, what was the Goal of the Programme?

Quite a different story according to their "Criteria" which most Startups only knew about on the Pitch day,...( i will post the Picture here)

It's So sad...i even spoke to my friend who made it to the Final 30,....but what i heard from him was embarrassing!

Until when I saw the official APC twitter handle tweeting all about the ASO VILLA DEMO DAY....then I realized, it was just a publicity stunt...

Maybe they will push it down our throats come 2019.
Every disappointment is a blessing. wink

Do you get paid for a demo? Come on, you only went to showcase what you have. Go ask the artist on the street if they get hotel accommodation, feeding or transport back to their base because they where invited by Don Jazzy to show their demo. Guy if nothing, you met the president, Mark Zukerberg and took selfies with him. Lots of us only read about him on Nairaland. Guy its not everything you pin on the federal government, learn not to expect rewards.

Kindly keep quiet and go back to your business, if its a good idea, you surely do not need government. Ask Dangote, or some of the most successful business men today. The government will look for you when you succeed

MY SIDE OF THE STORY
I heard abt AVDD here on nairaland, and as a sharp, and creative but Country-limited guy, i dived into the rushly-created, scanty-looking website. They asked us to pitch in less than 200 words, i did, in less than two hours of knowing abt it. Long story cut short, few weeks down the line, on a good wednesday, while i was enjoying the dry atmosphere of Abuja city, a text came in asking moi to reply immediately as it is a very urgent need. It goes "if you are to be selected for AVDD pitch, where would you wish to do your pitch?", obviously, they missed that on their amateur website (who does that!). I replied, but as soon as i was done, i remembered they didnt give info such as venue, date and time. I sent the number i replied to earlier a message to that effect, maybe He'll reply when the trumpet finally sounds (who doesnt wanna go to heaven?). I had to help myself with some online scrubbing and scouring until i got the number of the venue. My nerve was calmed and massaged when a young and angelic female voice piped thru the air from few doors away from me and confirmed that the event will be at THE PLATFORM VENTURE, ASO DRIVE. Early bird was there as the third or fourth person but you wouldnt even know there's any event. Finally, the place was filled and when it was well over an hour past the start time, a dark yoruba (i am too, mind you) but obviously britain-logged guy walked up to us and dish out reasonless apologies. But here's real SHAME, he said:
"If you have a SPECIAL CODE sent to you, we will attend to you first"
From that moment, my brain went into a self-dialogue mode, while i was burning my precious neurotransmiters thinking if the whole thing is a set up, the first and the PRIVILEGE SET finished, the camera awaited them at the doors and once they finished the PR foolishness, they camera guys packed their stuffs and went away. I could see a muss code blinking thru my cerebrae lobes, saying "Its a show, nothing else, enjoy it".
Imagine that one of the judges support wrong to continue because, according to him "what if my brothers are feeding from this and you want to take them out of their jobs with your innovation...........blah blah blah". Well i humbled them grin
Guys were telling me, congratulations ahead and here is what i told them:
"Dont hold your breathe"
They were very insincere from the start. I was in YOUWIN, abt 8people i know who knew nobody in govt won youwin and belief me, they are young millionaires in their own rights now (God Bless Goodluck Ebele Jonathan undecided ), there was sincerity, it was real, he really wanna transfer wealth to the younger generationsh, the best business organization were consulted, if you got good ideas, and you can present it attractively, you are in, no paddy paddy, no loitering agents, no fakes.
......................here i am, sipping from my jar of BURUKUTU, saying:
"if you dont buy lies, you wouldnt know the value of truth"
its painful, what those guys just did is stole all the business ideas and thats it. few years or even months down rhe line, your and mine bizideas would be released as NEW INNOVATIONS, i say so.
Its terrible...............

1, clarify. Your idea of who an investor is, so that I can give you an answer besides the one I already gave you in My write up.

2. I am not privy to the criteria used, however the two contestants that were selected had two of the ideas I could put my money on, so whoever selected them obviously knew good ideas, but for the last unknown guy that guy is just a political money hunter, don't know him he's just some dude with connections,

3. Yeah the tyre selling poo and all the human resource innovation peddling guys are not even supposed to make it, do you know how many people sell tyres online already, I can just wake up and start selling toothpicks online and call it innovation, can you tell me or convince me of the viability of that business idea? Yeah I'm not a judge but I happen to know bs if I see it.
Compare the tyre seller to the lady with a biofuel stove and who manufacture the biofuel itself.

4. It's a demo day bro, you come to demo your ideas to the world, not to get paid, hell they even got paid in kind, cuz I met some of them and I'm gonna be patronising their businesses and I helping them spread the word.
Nigerian people just want to get free money from the government always

Govt and business can be like oil and water. People who have been stuck in offices enjoying monthly salaries have no idea what it takes to make a business succeed. But i fault OP for 1 thing. Your business was not started by luck. It was time, money, preparation, pespiration. Why believe a bureaucrat will improve ur biz by the lottery of '3 lucky finalists'?
