Thank u op for this write up. It so easy for us in Naija to look at only the gud side of tinz and forget that there is anoda side to a story. The issues op raised are the main prbs bedeviling infrastructural development in Naija. We want the best but we can't maintain wat we have.

So whats the plan? Nigeria has been decaying under bad leadership because people think "its gonna be fine" with no specific plan. In developed economies, you cannot assure someone that things will be fine without giving a specific plan for that assurance

Her criticisms were constructive. Truth is government and by extension the NRC hasn't been known to be good managers of any business venture, they see it as 'government property' and as such, no commitment. The trains should have been concessioned to a private company with government still having some %age equity to make them more profitable.

From the very first day these trains were launched, I already said it that the greatest recipe for disaster was for the government (NRC or whatever) to be responsible for operating the trains instead of the private sector.

These trains could be a revenue generator for the government (as is the case globally), but I don't need onatisi or any other soothsayer to tell me the new trains would be another overbearing public liability draining government resources on a yearly basis. I give it only a couple of years (even before 2019), the trains would be killed by poor maintenance and the entire rail system would be buried by inept management.

Nothing managed by government ever works in Nigeria, it is not an insult, it is just a fact, and if these trains and the rail system must survive, they should be concessioned 100% to private companies who can run them at a profit and pay appropriate taxes to government. The only sector which seems to be working effectively in the country are the petroleum sector (operated mainly by foreign multinationals and indigenous private firms) and the telecommunications sector (also managed by private profit oriented investors).

The first error which highlighted the impending doom for these new trains was the FG fixing fares and playing politics with it. This may sound strange and silly to many but a fare of N900/N600/N500 is extremely cheap for high speed comfortable air-conditioned trains by world standards. Except the government plans to run the trains as a non-profit subsidised charity, the present model where a minister for transport just arbitrarily fixes fares (after a political meeting) is completely disastrous. In the UK for instance, high speed train transport is even cheaper than flying, and all trains are run by private corporations. Nigeria should have already learnt enough lessons from Nigeria airways to NITEL to NEPA to NPA etc. I pray the government receives sense!

Government has NO BUSINESS running anything in Nigeria as they have routinely demonstrated that they have NO idea how to run a company. If this commendable initiative is to survive, they need to concession it to private investors right away

It is difficult for an unexposed person to know the standard which certain amenities should b up to. With ur mediocre mentality, growing the naira wld surely take forever with "substandards" being the order of the day. She rode the train and enjoyed the service. She only had a few small complaints here and there then started ranting about the railway bill which lasted 60 years in the National Assembly but only got a review sometime this year. All in all riding the train was a beautiful experience which she would recommend to any interested individual.

Trains capable of travelling at speeds up to 100-150km/h, and standard gauge rails capable of supporting these rails cannot exactly be termed slow trains can they?

With the exception of super fast trains in few places like Japan, Spain etc., speeds of 100-150km/h are a standard all over the developed world.

But when I'm hearing that it takes 32 hrs for cattle from zamora to lags I don't even consider that fast.

The only modern rail service in Nigeria currently is the Abuja to Kaduna route, it supports trains up to speeds of 100-150km/hr. Other train services, i.e. the refurbished Lagos-Kano or PH to Makurdi etc are still pre-1960 archaic narrow gauge rail systems which can barely support train speeds up to 40km/hr. That's why you hear things like 32hr journeys.
