A 30-year-old man has been handed 33 years imprisonment by a Mombasa court for killing his mother by stabbing her twice on the neck. Chief Magistrate Julius Nang’ea found Joseph Kiora Syengo guilty of the offence, saying prosecution evidence were consistent and credible. “On the evidence and entire circumstances of the case, I do find and hold that the death of the deceased was caused unlawfully. The court finds that the legal threshold of proof beyond reasonable doubt has been met, the accused is consequently hereby convicted as charged,” the magistrate ruled. In his judgement, the magistrate noted that Mr Syengo’s act was motivated by anger but was not excusable.On his unsworn testimony, the suspect confessed to having inflicted the cuts on his mother, but explained that he acted under grave provocation.He defended himself saying the mother had tried to recruit him to inherit her witchcraft and had asked him to commit an act of incest with her.
