You know that awkward tiny pocket in your jeans? The one that’s basically a pocket in a pocket?
Ever since you wore your first pair, you’ve probably been trying to figure out what it’s for. After all, it’s not exactly big enough to fit most items. Your keys would dangle off on the outside, so that can’t be it. But your iPhone and wallet wouldn’t fit, either, so what the heck is that thing for?
The reason we’re so confused by it today, is because the pocket’s purpose has actually become outdated. According to Levi Strauss’ blog, it’s actually a watch pocket. See, back in the day, watches worn on the wrist weren’t really a thing yet. Instead, everyone – specifically, cowboys –was rocking the pocket watch, which meant pants with a specially built pocket for people’s favourite accessory was an easy sell. Over the years, however, that tiny little pocket took on many functions.
“Originally included as protection for pocket watches, thus the name, this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket, to name a few,” the blog says.
The pocket itself is also a fashion symbol, as many denim-lovers appreciate it for the faded and worn nature it takes on over time, which is why it’s still there.
Who knows, maybe in 2016, you can give that pocket a new purpose that’s entirely your own?
