State government begins work on $275million cable car project

The Lagos cable car project is on course. It is privately driven and the private sector need to get all the permits.

After three years of postponement, work has begun on the $275million cable car project.
In an interview with The Guardian, Lagos state Commissioner for Transportation, Dayo Mobereola, revealed intricate details of the car project.
“The Lagos cable car project is on course. It is privately driven and the private sector need to get all the permits, on the side of Lagos, we have given them all the necessary permit, they are talking to the federal government to get some level of guarantees and we have assisted them to write to the federal government. They have taken the advantage by starting to build from the Iddo side of Lagos."

Upon completion, the project will have eight stations in three routes, in order to handle the estimated 240,000 trips daily.

The car project will begin at Ijora, then move to Apapa and Victoria Island, with a central hub around Adeniji Adele.

MagLev Pods Set To Transform Transport In Lago

The system is designed to fit within the Yellow Line of the Lagos’s Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA). Nigeria then intends to integrate this into a country wide network.

skyTrans is using an innovative implementation of an energy-efficient, elevated, magnetic levitation system. The system comes in two flavours, the skyTran Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) or Cargo Rapid Transit (CRT); carrying people or freight respectively.

Construction & infrastructure News Maglev Nigeria TransportConstruction & infrastructure News Maglev Nigeria Transport
The network is built up from autonomous computer controlled “pods”. These pods might look like jets but they work using MagLev. MagLev works by allowing pods to glide above the track, supported by magnetic repulsion and propelled by a linear motor. As the pods do not touch the track, there is no friction to slow them down. This means they can travel very quickly compared a traditional train.

Once a pod reaches a speed of 10mp they can then glide on the track without requiring additional power, or accelerate up to speeds of 155mph.

The major advantage of SkyTrans is not just technological. SkyTrans are hoping to deploy the system for a cost of £13m per mile, compared to an estimated cost of £160m for an underground system.

Jerry Sanders, skyTrans Chairman, has described the Lagos project as “open[ing] the door to a new era of transportation in Africa”. Stating that “one of the major impediments to African growth is its poor transportation infrastructure”.

Interested in finding out more about SkyTrans. View their TedX talk below.

I wonder what the progress or the situation is with this project...

Future of modern transportation in Lagos looks very very bright...

Lagos 'll always be Lagos. leading by example. But I doubt the possibility of this project. The less than 1okm cable car in Obudu is both time and funds costly.

Is the timing right? Should this be a priority for Lagos state at this point in time? Then the big issue of "Maintenance" ! Let it not turn to another white elephant project like our almighty 'Mono rail' in Rivers state.....

Ok till then; but Lagos government should not forget that countries that have this already planned for it from inception. Structurally Lagos is congested already. If that is the case, so many people will still be rendered homeless. God will help us all.

In as much as I love this good news, but I'm not in support of this project anywhere in Nigeria. Reason? ...... because our health and safety is below average. in fact, zero.
