Senators on Wednesday kicked against the call for the sale of the country's national assets. Senate President, Bukola Saraki had on Tuesday advised the Federal government to sell the refineries and airports. The Senators made the call when they kick started their debate on the state of the country's economy during Wednesday's plenary. Contributing to the debate, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu faulted the call for the disposal of the national assets as suggested by the Senate President. "I have heard about the issue of selling of our assets. I need to caution that other countries are not doing same. UAE does not even allow you to own oil wells not to talk of selling them, "he said. He also advised the Federal government to consciously release money into the economy. "Yes, we are saying that there is no money, the oil price had dropped but we were also told that through the TSA we have about N3trillion somewhere. We were also told that the former minister of petroleum returned $20million. We were also told that politicians have returned several billions of naira, dollars and pounds. " It is either that this is not true or that the money is somewhere and if it is not true someone needs to apologise to us and state the correct thing and if it is true this money has to be released to contractors so that contractors can be able to go to work and money will circulate, "he said. Ekweremadu also advised the Federal government to renegotiate the terms of engagement with the country's oil majors saying, a situation where the production cost in Nigeria is between $18 to $24 is unacceptable and it is not happening anywhere in the world." Also, a former governor of Benue state, Senator George Akume asked the Federal Government to retain its ownership of the national assets. Akume urged the FG to intensify efforts at recovering stolen funds. "If we want to dispose our national assets at this time when the price of oil has crashed, precisely how much are we going to realise? We are making a mistake here. Those who want us to dispose our assets have deep pockets. Our nation's assets must not be sold, "he said. On his part, Senator Mohammed Danjuma Goje (APC, Gombe central) backed the call for the sale of the National assets. "What do we need the national assets for? Even when as individuals we dispose our assets when we need money. What do we need these assets for when Nigerians are hungry? The debate continues tomorrow. This particular call for sale of national assets particularly d NLNG 'smells' really 'fishy' to me. I have no doubt it's a demonic plan to place d live wire of d economy in the hands of a greedy lot for some sort of unlawful and sinister empowerment. Thank God for sensible ppl like Ekweremadu. I am also certain this is the reason for that proposed economic emergency power so that they can cut off the Senate and do rubbish. Hopefully d majority of the NASS will hear and echo the voices of the masses not to be sold into some form of benign yet malignant slavery! |

On the debate of sale of Government Assets, we can see to an extent the nature of our government officials. Imagine; "as individuals, we dispose our properties when we needed money"-Mohammed Danjuma Goje. My dad have always reminded me "Young man, never you sell your property no matter how broke you are. This is because you may never be able to buy those items again". Thinking about it, if our government sells those assets at this period, how much do they expect to realize and what exactly are they planning to do with the money? I believe a committee will be set up , When exactly will they set up the committee to look into it and submit thier findings? When will the money agreed to be paid by the buyers start flowing into the government account?- hope not during the election period in 2019. Senator Ekweremadu made a candid suggestion and asked the pertinent questions-If stolen funds have been recovered, why not release them into the economy. Probably all the issue of money been recovered is just a mere jamboree and a cover up, after all no one has been jailed. |
