Nigerian Army to launch “Operation Rescue Final” for abducted persons The Nigerian Army says it will launch “Operation Rescue Final’’ aimed at rescuing abducted persons. The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, said this on Wednesday when the House of Representatives Committee on Army, led by its Chairman, Rimande Shawulu, paid him oversight visit. Mr. Buratai, a Lt. Gen., had hinted of the operation in Makurdi on September 22 at the close of the combined 2nd and 3rd quarter Chief of Army Staff Conference. The chief of Army staff, who, did not give further details on the operation, said: “Once we start (the operation), we will not relent until everybody abducted is rescued”. Mr. Buratai thanked the committee for increased budget allocation to the army in 2016 and solicited for more support to enable it carry out its statutory functions. On the issue of human rights, he promised that the army would continue respect and not infringe on the rights of the people, while carrying out its duty. Mr. Buratai, however, noted that whatever had happened in the course of personnel performing their duty was not “deliberate’’. He said to ensure respect for human rights, discipline and professionalism, the army launched its human right policy on Tuesday. Earlier, Mr. Shawulu commended the army for the fight against insurgency and other security challenges nationwide in spite of the challenges of poor funding, inadequate equipment and state of their barracks. The chairman, however, noted that because they were deployed in almost all the states, performing functions, which ordinarily were not theirs, there had been “friction’’ with civilians. “We are requesting for quicker responses to the issues and matters referred from the committee to you. “This is important to assure members of the public that there is a channel that can lead to legal, constitutional and peaceful resolution of their complaints. “This will ensure that people do not seek extra legal resolutions,’’ Mr. Shawulu said. He assured that the committee would continue to support the army to enable it discharge its duties effectively. |

US military: Killed 4 Somali al-Shabab fighters in 'self-defense' The extremists launched attacks on Somali troops and their U.S. advisers on Monday in a village near the port city of Kismayo, Cpt. Jennifer Dyrcz with U.S. Africa Command said. Somali forces returned fire, killing several extremists, but the attack continued, according to military officials. The U.S. then conducted its strike, killing four fighters. "Based on the threatening maneuver by Al-Shabaab fighters and their previous hostile engagement with the Somali forces, the U.S. conducted a self-defense strike to neutralize the threat," Dyrcz explained. U.S. forces have carried out several airstrikes in Somalia in recent years, killing many al-Shabab leaders. The extremist group is now mostly active in rural regions but continues to launch lethal attacks in many parts of this Horn of Africa nation, including the capital city of Mogadishu. Kismayo is approximately 300 miles southwest of Mogadishu. |

bidexiii:i think this the best reason why there are civilian-military and police-military clashes. Alot of Police jobs are being done by the Military--almost every state had a security formation that entails deployment of soldiers. So many tasks are been left to the military to handle even Robbery is not left out. So, IMO the Police force should be trained Better and Equipped to face and deal with challenges THAT ARE ORIGINALLY their's than to depend/call on the military to take on tasks that are getting outta their control. On the other hand, i don't blame the Police for 'pushing' some of their tasks to the military because MOST times, you will see Policemen escorting Bullion van wearing no Bullet proof vests or helments --just hanging onto life with just their AK's and handkerchief covering their nose. It's a known fact that they are the 'first' contact with criminals and to discharged their duties well, i think they should be kitted/trained to a level where they can take on "Determined" Armed Robbers. |

bidexiii:This is another headache the security agencies would have to deal with if they are to bring BH down to its knees. Imagine the amount of funds that would be available to the terror organisation if those cattles were successfully sold. Every channel of sourcing funds must be blocked to cripple their financial activities. Take away their financial wherewithal and lets see how they would effectively prosecute this war. I believe the security agencies are up to the task. They need to be creative and very decisive. #nowarischeap Is it possible that the EFCC is involved in this war in the NE especially Maiduguri. To curb the inflow of BH finances, restrictions should be placed on amount of cash that can be moved around and a go. Electronic payments should be encouraged for those who make large volume trades across the region. That way, the agencies can effectively monitor individuals and elements involved in financing BH war machinery. #nowarischeap |

KDF soldier captured in El Adde pleads with Uhuru in al Shabaab video Al Shabaab militants have released a video of a man allegedly captured in the El Adde attack asking the President to withdraw troops from Somalia and negotiate release. The eight-minute video released on Thursday features a 40-year old Leonard Maingi, who identifies himself as a KDF soldier and is in the full Kenyan military uniform. Maingi, who says he hails from Makueni county, gives details of how the terror group overran an Amisom camp on January 15, killing a number the state is yet to confirm. “My message is to you, President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta . As commander-in-chief of the Kenyan Defence Forces, we follow your orders,” he says. “As soldiers, we obeyed your instructions and crossed into Somalia. We then went ahead to El Adde where we were attacked on January 15. We tried fighting but we were defeated and weapons seized." The video does not show other prisoners of war but Maingi mentions colleagues who are also in captivity. Reports indicated at least 12 soldiers were captured alive and others with injuries, and that the terrorists used some as human shields while Kenyan security agencies pursued them. “Mr President, this may be the last chance to plead with you as my commander that I swore to serve and one that I love. Please, I am begging you Mr President,” Maingi says in the background of what appears to be a thicket. He does not look frail but bears a thick beard. Maingi goes on to say that he joined KDF in 1997 and was attached to the 9th Battalion at Moi Barracks in Eldoret. He says he was a doctor in the nursing section of the battalion and that he joined the African Union peace-keeping force on January 1, two weeks before the militants attacked the base in Southern Somalia. The captive further sends messages to family members and political leaders. “I want to tell them (family) that I love them, I pray for them and I wish for the to pray for them. My only hope as a prisoner is them,” he says. Since the attack almost eight months ago, little is known about the incident termed as the most brutal assault on Kenyan soldiers despite, the government's promise of a probe. Al Shabaab has been thriving on propaganda around the attack, in an effort to remain relevant in an increasingly shrinking space, following the onslaught by Amisom and Somali national forces. Shortly after the ambush, the terror group posted a video online claiming the militants were targeting major centres including State House. In it, a heavily-bearded man seated on the ground tells a group dressed in hooded clothing that they will march on State House and force Kenya to “change their flag by erasing all the colours – except the red one”. Ahmed Iman, a JKUAT-trained engineer from Majengo, and on whose head there is a Sh300 million bounty, said al Shabaab “will spill blood in Kenya”.
